Handball in the United States is a rapidly growing sport governed by USA Team Handball (USATH), with collegiate programs, club leagues, and national championships expanding each year. The sport gained visibility through Olympic broadcasts and grassroots initiatives in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Build your own American handball roster and simulate a full season to see how your team competes against the best in the country.
7 players per team on the court: 1 goalkeeper and 6 field players. Each team also has up to 7 substitutes on the bench.
A match lasts 2 halves of 30 minutes each, totaling 60 minutes of effective play, plus a 10-15 minute halftime break.
Players can take 3 steps with the ball, hold it for a maximum of 3 seconds, and cannot enter the goalkeeper's 6-meter zone. Fouls result in free throws or penalties (7-meter throws).
USA Team Handball (USATH) is the national governing body, overseeing club leagues, national championships, and the men's and women's national teams. Collegiate handball is also growing through university club programs.
Handball was introduced to the US largely through European immigrants. The sport gained momentum after Olympic exposure, and USATH has been working to develop grassroots programs and youth academies since the 1970s.
Notable clubs include New York City Team Handball, Los Angeles Handball Club, and the Chicago Inter Handball Club. Many clubs compete in the USATH Club National Championships annually.
There is no fully professional league yet, but the Premier Handball League and USATH-sanctioned club competitions are expanding the competitive landscape significantly.
You can join a local club through the USATH directory or start at a university club program. Many cities offer beginner clinics and open gym sessions to introduce new players to the sport.
