A system isn't just a diagram: it's an idea of volleyball. From the slow game of the early days to modern setter penetration and the quick game, every era invented its own way to organise the six players around the net. 1895–1960 · The origins

From mintonette to three touches

Invented in 1895 by William Morgan, volleyball is codified bit by bit: the serve, the three-touch rule, the compulsory rotation. The game stays slow, based on the return, until the Eastern bloc structures the first organised serve-receive and attacks.

Defence is already thought of in zones. On a tactics board, these choices read at a glance: who covers the front, who digs deep, how the first line forms.

1964–1990 · The great schools

Setter penetration & the block

Volleyball joins the Games in 1964 and takes off. The Eastern school imposes setter penetration: the setter comes up from the back to play at the net, freeing one more attacker. The 5-1 system and the 4-2 become standard.

The block becomes a collective weapon: single, double, triple. Three ways to organise the same six players — exactly what a tactics board lets you compare side by side, both serve-receive and defence.

1998–2026 · Modern volleyball

Libero, rally point, quick game

Two revolutions: the libero (1998) specialises serve-receive and defence, and rally point scoring (a point on every rally) speeds it all up. The quick game dominates: first-tempo attacks, holding the block, combinations to isolate a blocker.

Today the vocabulary is everywhere: W serve-receive, double block, cover, 6-back defence, holding the block, pipe. The tactics board puts these concepts within everyone's reach: you don't need a badge to show where to set your serve-receive and when to go up for the block.

A static position tells you nothing. What turns a line-up into a readable system is the lines: movements, sets, attacks, serves, zones and notes — each in the colour of your choice. Here's the visual grammar of the board.

Player movement
The run. Trace a player's path from one position to the next: setter penetration, attack-to-defence transition, repositioning after the block.
Set / pass
The delivery. Link two players for the pass to the setter, the set to the net, the free ball. The line tells you who feeds whom.
Attack / spike
The kill. A bold arrow over the net to show the attack, the spike, the pipe or the tip. The path of the winning ball.
Serve
The serve. Trace the serve's path — float, jump-spike, targeted at a zone — to work on putting the opponent's serve-receive under pressure.
Defence / block zone
The space. Mark out a floor-defence zone, the seam in the block, the area to protect. Essential for explaining a collective cover.
Text annotation

The words to know to talk volleyball tactics.

Rotation & positions
The six positions (P1 to P6) and the clockwise rotation on serve. Position on serve, on serve-receive, in defensive placement: each rotation is drawn to avoid an overlap fault.
5-1 / 4-2 / 6-2 system
The team's skeleton. 5-1 = a single setter across all six rotations. 4-2 = two setters in the front zone. 6-2 = two setters who come up from the back. The structuring choice of any team.
W / L serve-receive
The serve-receive formation. The W receive (five passers) or reduced to three with the libero. Who takes which zone, who hides: the base of a clean attack.
Setter penetration
The setter coming up from the back to the net to set. Frees one more attacker in the front zone. The run is traced step by step.
Block (single, double, triple)
The first defensive line at the net. Single block, double on the main hitter, or triple. The placement, the seam and the cover behind are shown better than they're explained.
Attack cover
Repositioning around your hitter to recover the ball blocked back by the opposing block. The forgotten phase that saves points — crystal clear in animation.
6-back / 6-up defence
The middle-back's position. 6-back = digging deep; 6-up = stepping up for the tip. The defensive dial depending on the opponent.
Combination & holding the block
The crossing runs at the net (tandem, double-quick) to hold the opposing block and isolate a hitter one-on-one. The art of opening up the block.
The libero
