From goalkeeper to pivot, pick the 7 on court and the 9 on the bench.

TeamBranch replicates the official structure of an Olympic team handball squad: 1 goalkeeper, 6 court players, 9 substitutes, a captain, a defensive system. Seven positions, seven choices, from goalkeeper to right wing. This is the IHF seven-a-side indoor sport — not the four-wall Gaelic alley game, despite the shared name.

Pick from the current Olympic Handball Ireland senior squad drawn from the university league, the Trinity, UCD, UCC, DCU, NUI Galway, Maynooth, UL and Athlone club rosters, the Irish exiles playing in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Denmark, or bring in reinforcements from Germany, Denmark, France or Norway. You can also build a 100% mates team for the club tournament at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown.

The Seven Gazette · Irish Olympic team handball special edition
No. 089 · 1969-2026

Fifty-seven years of Olympic team handball in Ireland, fifty-seven ways to imagine it.

From the foundation of the Olympic Handball Association of Ireland in 1969 by GAA athletes and exchange students returning from continental Europe, to the modern Olympic Handball Ireland federation, fully restructured in the 2010s, the story of IHF team handball in Ireland is a story of patient growth in the shadow of giants — GAA Handball, hurling, Gaelic football, rugby. 50+ university and city clubs, IHF Emerging Nations Championship appearances, EHF affiliate membership, a small but growing pool of Irish-eligible exiles in European leagues. On TeamBranch, you can replay every era — or, more honestly, every 'what if' — and build the Ireland team that never quite happened.

1969 → 2005 · The original federation

From exchanges to founding

The Olympic Handball Association of Ireland is founded in 1969 by Irish students returning from Erasmus-era exchanges in Germany and France, plus a handful of GAA athletes curious about the indoor variant. Early clubs are tied to universities: UCD, Trinity College Dublin, UCC. Membership in the IHF follows in the 1970s, but international competition is sporadic and Ireland never qualifies for a senior IHF or EHF tournament.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the federation is essentially run on volunteer effort. The combined cultural pull of GAA Handball (4-wall and 1-wall alley games) and the GAA's dominant sports-hall footprint makes growth slow. Clubs come and go; the senior international programme is dormant for long stretches.

2010 → 2018 · The restructuring

EHF affiliate & IHF Emerging Nations

From around 2010, the federation rebuilds. Olympic Handball Ireland becomes the modern governance body, securing EHF affiliate member status and joining the IHF Emerging Nations Championship programme. The university league expands beyond Dublin: DCU, NUI Galway, Maynooth University, University of Limerick, Athlone IT, Waterford IT, UCC and UCD all develop active handball clubs in the BUSCA and intervarsities ecosystems.

City clubs grow alongside: Astra Handball Dublin, Cork City Handball Club, Galway Handball, Wexford Handball. Senior internationals appear at IHF Emerging Nations Championship tournaments, with squads largely drawn from the university leagues. The first Ireland-eligible players sign professional contracts in continental Europe — typically in lower-tier German, Dutch and Spanish leagues.

2019 → 2026 · The current generation

Patient growth & the 2027 dream

The current senior programme operates as a hybrid of university league talent, city club players and Ireland-eligible exiles. The senior men's and women's squads compete in IHF Emerging Nations Championship cycles, occasional EHF Wild Card events, and friendly tournaments against fellow developing nations (Britain, Cyprus, Malta, Faroe Islands).

The 2027 IHF World Championship in Germany is a long-shot symbolic target — Ireland is unlikely to qualify directly, but the buildup, the squad announcements, and the conversation around 'what if we converted top GAA athletes' all generate real interest. The base keeps growing: more universities, more clubs in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Belfast, and a longer waiting list of Irish-eligible players entering academies in Hamburg, Aalborg, Granollers and beyond.

Architecture of the seven

How is an Olympic team handball squad set up?

A team handball squad has 7 players on court (one goalkeeper, six court players) and 9 substitutes on the team sheet. Each position has a precise role: this is the grammar TeamBranch replicates. Completely different from GAA Handball's 1v1 or 2v2 alley game.

The back court (pivot, two backs, centre back) is the foundation: building play, 9-metre shooting, positional handball in 6-0. The wings are the speed: finishing, fast breaks, movement play. The goalkeeper (green shirt) wins finals on his own.

Goalkeeper · no. 1, 12, 16
The green shirt. Reflexes, reading the game, long outlet pass. Often the most experienced senior in an Olympic Handball Ireland squad — a player who has graduated from the university league and stayed.
Wings · left & right
The finishers. Jumping power, narrow angle, fast break. Wing play suits converted Gaelic football half-forwards — quick over the first three steps, comfortable in the air, used to angled finishes.
Centre back · 1-3-3 axis
The quarterback of handball. Vision, passing, tactics. Typically the captain. In Ireland's pool, often a Trinity, UCD or UCC veteran who has played in the BUSCA league for 4-5 years and possibly a stint in a German lower-tier league.
Backs · left & right
The big shooters. Shots from 9 metres, breakthrough runs, one-on-ones. A position where Ireland-eligible exiles playing in Germany or Spain add real value to the senior squad — physical, taller players who can shoot through a 6-0 wall.
Pivot · position 5
The warrior between defenders. Screens, seal-offs, inside defence. A position that would suit a hurling forward or a top-tier GAA midfielder — physical, comfortable with contact, smart positioning.
Bench · 9 substitutes
Rolling substitutions, unlimited, with no stop-clock. Defensive specialists, second goalkeeper, doubles at every position. In a developing programme, the bench is often where the next generation of senior caps comes from.
Team handball lexicon

The words you need to talk team handball like at the National Indoor Arena Abbotstown.

Goal
The ultimate move: ball in the back of the opponent's net, behind the 6-metre line. Worth 1 point, no three-pointers here — it's the unit. (Different from GAA Handball, which scores points off the wall.)
6-metre line
The 6-metre arc around the goal: only the goalkeeper may stand inside. An attacker can jump over it, but must release the ball before landing. Foundation rule.
9-metre line
The dashed line marking the free-throw zone after a foul. Defenders must stay behind. Most shots from the backs come from there.
7-metre throw
The penalty in team handball. Shot face-to-face with the goalkeeper, from 7 m, with no run-up. Awarded on clear scoring chances. Success rate ~75% at elite level.
Fast break & second wave
The art of speed handball. First wave in under 6 seconds, second wave before the defence recovers. The Gaelic football quick free analogue — a transition style Irish players naturally understand.
Defence 6-0 / 5-1 / 3-2-1
Defensive systems. 6-0 = closed wall at 6 m. 5-1 = one defender pushed up onto the centre back. 3-2-1 = stacked, aggressive.
Seven against six
The goalkeeper-out tactic: empty net, 7-against-6 overload. Invented by the Spaniards in the 2010s, now standard in set play.
Quick throw-off
After every goal, the receiving team may play from the centre circle without waiting for a whistle. Allows a score in under 4 seconds on lightning transition.
GAA Handball alley
Different sport, shared name. A 60×30 four-wall alley (or 1-wall outdoor court) used for Gaelic handball — the wall-ball game governed by GAA Handball, played at most GAA clubs across Ireland. The two sports are not related beyond the English-language name.

Frequently asked questions

The classics on the ideal seven (and the GAA Handball disambiguation).

Selection of the most asked questions on Google and in our user messages.

Is this Olympic team handball or GAA Gaelic handball?
This page is about Olympic team handball — the seven-a-side indoor sport governed by the IHF and played at the Olympics. In Ireland, when most people say 'handball', they mean GAA Handball, the traditional Gaelic wall-ball sport (1-wall, 4-wall, 60×30 alley) governed by GAA Handball under the Gaelic Athletic Association. The two sports share a name but nothing else — different rules, different courts, different governing bodies. We have huge respect for the GAA Handball tradition and recommend visiting GAA Handball for that side of the sport. This page is for the IHF Olympic team handball played by Olympic Handball Ireland.
How do I build my ideal Irish team handball squad online?
Pick a defensive system (6-0, 5-1, 3-2-1, seven-against-six), then fill the 7 court positions and 9 bench slots from 9,500 players: current Olympic Handball Ireland senior squad, key players from Trinity, UCD, UCC, DCU, NUI Galway and Maynooth handball clubs, top European pros, or upload your own photo cards of teammates from your university league side. No sign-up, 100% free.
How is a team handball squad set up?
The starting seven is 1 goalkeeper and 6 court players: 1 left wing, 1 left back, 1 centre back (the playmaker), 1 right back, 1 right wing and 1 pivot (line player) between defenders. Plus 9 substitutes, with rolling substitutions. TeamBranch replicates this exactly — completely different from the GAA Handball alley game.
Can I build my Irish seven for the 2027 World Championship?
Yes, that's currently the most popular option. The 2027 IHF Men's World Championship is hosted in Germany from 13 to 31 January 2027, with 32 nations competing. Ireland are not direct qualification candidates — Olympic Handball Ireland competes in the IHF Emerging Nations Championship — but you can still build your dream Ireland 2027 seven from the current senior pool, university stars and Irish exiles. We offer 6 pre-filled templates: current senior squad, university all-stars, all-time Ireland, IHF Emerging Nations selection, GAA-conversion seven and World Seven.
Can I build a team with my mates or family?
Of course. More than 620,000 custom teams have already been created. You upload photos of your mates, brother, da, cousin, your university handball club captain, and place them at whatever positions you want. Perfect for a club tournament, a stag in Galway or Killarney, or a WhatsApp group of handball mates from college.
What about Olympic Handball Ireland women's team?
Yes, the women's senior squad is fully integrated. Olympic Handball Ireland women have competed at the IHF Emerging Nations Championship and EHF Wild Card events. The squad draws heavily from university clubs: Trinity, UCD, UCC, DCU, NUI Galway, Maynooth, UL. Build your seven around the captain, key playmakers, and breakthrough players from the university league, plus several Ireland-eligible exiles playing professionally in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark — a small but determined pool.
Which defensive systems does TeamBranch offer?
Four: 6-0 (the classic wall), 5-1 (one defender pushed up onto the centre back, Spanish school), 3-2-1 (stacked aggressive defence, Bad Boys style), seven-against-six (Spanish school, goalkeeper replaced by an extra court player). You can switch at any time, the team auto-reorganises on the interactive court.
Why is team handball still a small sport in Ireland?
Three reasons. First, the name confusion with GAA Handball — when Irish people search 'handball', they typically mean the wall-ball game played in Gaelic alleys. Second, the GAA's dominant footprint: Gaelic football, hurling and camogie soak up sports-hall infrastructure, school PE programmes and youth pathways. Third, the late arrival of IHF team handball — Olympic Handball Ireland was only fully restructured in the 2010s. But the picture is changing: 50+ university and city clubs, IHF Emerging Nations Championship appearances, EHF affiliate membership and a growing pipeline of Ireland-eligible players in continental European leagues.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exceptions. Team-building, sharing, exporting, uploading your own photo cards, tactical simulation — everything is free. No sign-up, no intrusive ads, no paywall. You can create as many teams as you like.
