From goalkeeper to pivot, pick the 7 on court and the 9 on the bench.

TeamBranch replicates the official structure of a team-handball roster: 1 goalkeeper, 6 court players, 9 substitutes, a captain, a defensive system. Seven positions, seven choices, from the goalkeeper to the right wing.

Build from the current USA Team Handball player pool, the LA 2028 host generation of recruits and college/club athletes, the 1984 Los Angeles legacy (the US women's fourth-place team), or bring in reinforcements from Denmark, France, Germany or Spain. You can also build a 100% buddies team for the rec league or college club.

No. 089 · 1959-2028

Seven decades of American team handball, one home Olympics to change it all.

From the founding of the US Team Handball Federation in 1959 through two host-nation Olympics, a fourth-place women's team in 1984, and two decades in the wilderness — American team handball has always been a sport waiting for its moment. LA 2028 is that moment: a guaranteed Olympic stage, a recruitment drive, and a generation of athletes about to discover the sport. On TeamBranch, replay every era — or build the team you want to see take the floor in Los Angeles.

1959 → 1983 · The pioneer era

An imported sport finds a federation

Team handball arrives in the US through colleges, the armed forces and European immigrants. The US Team Handball Federation is founded in 1959. The sport remains tiny — squeezed between basketball, football, baseball and the wall-ball game most Americans already call 'handball'.

Through the 1960s and 70s, the national program leans heavily on military bases and a handful of college clubs. The men make their first Olympic appearance at Montreal 1976, but the US is firmly outside the European-dominated elite.

1984 → 1996 · The host-nation peaks

LA 1984 and Atlanta 1996

As hosts of Los Angeles 1984, both US teams play — and the women finish fourth, the best Olympic result in American handball history and still the benchmark. The men compete on home soil too, in front of curious LA crowds discovering the sport for the first time.

The pattern repeats at Atlanta 1996: host-nation berths, a brief spotlight, then the lights go out. Without an automatic ticket or sustained funding, the elite program winds down after the Games leave town.

2000 → 2028 · Wilderness, then LA28

From two decades out to a home Games

For more than twenty years, Team USA does not appear at an Olympics. The sport survives on college clubs, the national championships, Army/West Point teams and a small core of devoted players and coaches. Recognition by the USOPC and IHF keeps the structure in place, but funding is thin.

Everything changes with the LA 2028 award. USA Team Handball launches athlete-ID combines, residency ideas and a recruitment push — converting basketball, football, volleyball and track athletes, the same playbook Great Britain used for London 2012. The target: be competitive, on home soil, in front of a new American audience.

Architecture of the seven

How is a handball team set up?

A handball team has 7 players on court (one goalkeeper, six court players) and 9 substitutes on the team sheet. Each position has a precise role: this is the grammar TeamBranch replicates.

The back court (pivot, two backs, center back) is the foundation: building play, 9-meter shooting, positional handball in 6-0. The wings are the speed: finishing, fast breaks, movement. The goalkeeper (distinct jersey) can win a game on his or her own.

Goalkeeper · no. 1, 12, 16
The last line of defense. Reflexes, reading the shooter, the long outlet pass that starts the fast break. In a recruiting program, often a converted volleyball or basketball athlete with reach.
Wings · left & right
The finishers. Jumping power, tight-angle shots, the fast break. A natural home for converted track sprinters and explosive ball-sport athletes.
Center back · 1-3-3 axis
The quarterback of handball. Vision, passing, tempo, running the defense. The hardest position to convert into — it rewards players who grew up with the game.
Backs · left & right
The big shooters. Shots from 9 meters, breakthrough drives, one-on-ones. Ideal for tall, powerful athletes — the classic basketball/football convert profile in the US recruiting model.
Pivot · position 5
The enforcer between the defenders. Screens, seals, inside finishes, inside defense. Built for strong, physical athletes who thrive in contact.
Bench · 9 substitutes
Rolling substitutions, unlimited, no stop-clock. Defensive specialists, a second goalkeeper, doubles at every position.
Handball lexicon

The words you need to talk handball before LA 2028 tips off.

Goal
The basic unit: ball in the back of the net, behind the 6-meter line. Worth 1 point — no three-pointers here, no matter how American that feels.
6-meter line (the crease)
The 6-meter arc around the goal: only the goalkeeper may stand inside. An attacker can jump over it but must release the ball before landing. The foundation rule.
9-meter line (free-throw line)
The dashed line marking the free-throw zone after a foul. Defenders must drop behind it. Most back-court shots come from here.
7-meter throw
The penalty shot. One-on-one with the goalkeeper from 7 m, no run-up. Awarded on clear scoring chances. Success rate ~75% at elite level.
Fast break & second wave
The art of speed handball. First wave in under 6 seconds, second wave before the defense resets. The phase where American athleticism translates fastest.
Defense 6-0 / 5-1 / 3-2-1
Defensive systems. 6-0 = closed wall at 6 m. 5-1 = one defender pushed up onto the center back. 3-2-1 = stacked, aggressive, with outside breaks onto the backs.
Seven against six
The empty-net tactic: pull the goalkeeper for an extra court player, 7-on-6 overload. Invented by Spain in the 2010s, now standard in set play.
Quick throw-off
After every goal, the receiving team may restart from the center line without waiting for a whistle — a score in under 4 seconds on a lightning restart.
Team handball vs American handball
The US naming trap: American handball is the wall game. Team handball is this 7-a-side Olympic sport. Same word, completely different game.

Every era has its story, even one as thin as American handball's. On TeamBranch, you can reconstruct each team, or swap one name to see what changes. What if the 1984 women had reached the final? What would a fully-recruited LA 2028 squad of converted athletes look like? Answer in 60 seconds.

American handball · where it's played

There's no pro league — so where do you actually play?

The US has no professional team-handball league. Instead the sport runs on three tracks: the USA Team Handball National Championships (open club competition), a network of college clubs (NCAA does not sanction the sport), and a deep military tradition centered on the academies. These are the hubs that have kept American team handball alive between host-nation Olympics — and the feeders for the LA 2028 push.

Frequently asked questions

The classics on the ideal seven.

Selection of the most asked questions on Google and in our user messages.

How do I build my ideal Team USA handball team online?
Pick a defensive system (6-0, 5-1, 3-2-1, seven-against-six), then fill the 7 court positions and 9 bench slots from a pool of 9,500 players: the current USA Team Handball player pool, the LA 2028 host generation, college and military club standouts, top international pros, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up, 100% free.
Wait — is this the same handball you play against a wall?
No, and this is the most common mix-up in the US. American handball (wall ball, one-wall or four-wall) is a racket-style sport where you strike a ball against a wall with your hand. This builder is for Olympic team handball: 7-a-side, played on a 40x20 m court with two goals, fast breaks and 9-meter shots — the sport the rest of the world just calls handball, contested at the Olympic Games.
Do Team USA handball teams play at the LA 2028 Olympics?
Yes. As host of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the United States qualifies automatically in both the men's and women's tournaments — the first US Olympic handball appearance since hosting Atlanta 1996. That host berth is the biggest opportunity in the history of American team handball, and USA Team Handball is building a player pool specifically for the Games.
How is a handball team set up?
The starting seven is made up of 1 goalkeeper and 6 court players: 1 left wing, 1 left back, 1 center back (the playmaker), 1 right back, 1 right wing and 1 pivot (line player) between the opposing defenders. Plus 9 substitutes, with rolling substitutions. TeamBranch replicates this structure exactly.
Can I get recruited for Team USA handball before LA 2028?
It's one of the few realistic Olympic pathways in American sport. USA Team Handball has run open athlete-identification combines, recruiting tall, explosive athletes from basketball, football, volleyball, track and water polo — most have never played handball. The model echoes Great Britain's London 2012 'project squad'. For a college-age athlete in the right window, the federation's tryout and residency programs are the place to start.
Can I build a team with my buddies or family?
Of course. More than 620,000 custom teams have already been created. Upload photos of your buddies, brother, dad, cousin, gym coach, and place them at any position. Perfect for a rec-league roster, a college club, a bachelor party, or a group chat that needs to settle who's the better center back.
Which defensive systems does TeamBranch offer?
Four: 6-0 (the classic wall), 5-1 (one defender pushed up onto the center back, Spanish school), 3-2-1 (stacked aggressive defense, Bad Boys style), seven-against-six (goalkeeper replaced by an extra court player). Switch any time — the team auto-reorganizes on the interactive court.
What is Team USA's handball history?
The US Team Handball Federation dates to 1959. American teams have only reached the Olympics as hosts: the men in 1984 (LA) and 1996 (Atlanta), the women in 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. The high point is the US women's fourth place at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. After Atlanta 1996, without an automatic berth or funding, Team USA went two decades without an Olympic appearance — college clubs and a strong military (Army/West Point) tradition kept the sport alive. LA 2028 reopens the door.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exceptions. Team-building, sharing, exporting, uploading your own photo cards, tactical simulation — everything is free. No sign-up, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Create as many teams as you like.
