From loosehead prop to full-back, draft your fifteen Eagles.

TeamBranch reproduces the official structure of a rugby union XV: 8 forwards (the pack), 7 backs (the back line), a captain, a tactical formation. Fifteen positions, fifteen calls, from number 1 to number 15.

Draft from the current Eagles, the Major League Rugby standouts, international icons, or pick from the All Blacks, Springboks, France, Ireland and the rest of the world. With home World Cups in 2031 and 2033 on the horizon, American rugby has never had more to play for — and you can build the XV that grows with it. Or just put together a side made entirely of your friends for the weekend club run.

The Eagle Standard · special USA rugby edition
N° 01 · 1920-2026

A century of American rugby, and the biggest decade still ahead.

From two Olympic gold medals in the 1920s to a long wilderness, from the birth of Major League Rugby to a return to the World Cup and two home tournaments confirmed for 2031 and 2033 — American rugby is a story unlike any other, and its greatest chapter is only just beginning. On TeamBranch you can build every generation of Eagles, or the side you believe walks out down under.

1920 → 1976 · The golden footnote

Olympic champions, then the long quiet

Rugby reached American shores in the 19th century and the West Coast became its heartland, with California universities carrying the game. A US college-built side stunned the world by winning Olympic gold in 1920 in Antwerp and again in 1924 in Paris, beating France in front of a hostile crowd.

Then rugby fell off the Olympic programme — and because XV rugby never came back, the USA remain the reigning Olympic champions to this day. After that, American rugby entered a long, quiet wilderness, kept alive by clubs and colleges.

1976 → 2018 · The amateur Eagles

Test rugby and World Cup regulars

The modern Eagles played their first official Test in 1976 and were one of the sixteen invited nations at the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup. Through the amateur decades the side lived on passion and club rugby, mixing the occasional famous scalp with the hard reality of facing full-time professionals.

The Eagles' modern high points came as the sport searched for a foothold: a one-win World Cup record in 1987, 2003 and 2011, and a landmark 2017 Americas Rugby Championship — the country's first 15s title in over 90 years.

2018 → 2033 · The professional rise

MLR, the comeback, the home Cups

Olympic sevens returning in 2016 lit a fuse. Two years later Major League Rugby kicked off, giving the country its first real professional 15s competition and a home pathway for American players. The New England Free Jacks built a dynasty, winning three straight titles.

After missing 2023, the Eagles roared back to qualify for RWC 2027 with a win over Samoa in Denver. And the biggest news of all: World Rugby awarded the USA the men's 2031 and women's 2033 World Cups.

Architecture of the XV

How is a rugby union team built?

A rugby XV runs out with 15 starters and a bench of reserves: the pack and the back line, the forwards and the backs. Each jersey number maps to a specific role. American rugby prizes size, speed and athletic crossover from football and basketball — but the set piece is where Tests are decided.

The pack (1 to 8) is about set-piece and contact: scrums, lineouts, mauls, rucks. The backs (9 to 15) are about movement: handling, territory, running lines, finishing. All of it under a captain, who can wear any number.

Front row · 1, 2, 3
Loosehead, hooker, tighthead. The scrum's foundation. The US has long produced powerful, mobile front-rowers, many converted from American football.
Locks · 4, 5
The lineout towers. Jumpers, mauling, big hits — the kind of rangy, explosive athletes the United States can find in abundance.
Loose forwards · 6, 7, 8
Two flankers and a number 8. The collision specialists: breakdown work, tackle counts, ball-carrying. American physicality lives here.
Half-backs · 9, 10
The team's brain: scrum-half and fly-half. The hardest positions to develop, and the key to turning Eagles athleticism into points.
Centres · 12, 13
The inside and outside centre. Footwork, distribution and the line-breaking power that punishes a defence.
Back three · 11, 14, 15
Left wing, right wing, full-back. Pure pace, aerial nerve, finishing — where US sprint speed becomes a genuine weapon.
American rugby lexicon

The words to know to talk rugby like a Free Jacks regular.

Try
The supreme act: ground the ball over the opposition try line. Worth 5 points, plus 2 for the conversion. The rugby cousin of a touchdown — but you have to ground it yourself.
Scrum
The iconic set piece: 8 vs 8, hooker in the middle, props either side, locks behind. The pack the Eagles build around.
Lineout
The restart after the ball goes into touch: an alignment of jumpers, the hooker throws, locks get lifted. A tactical set piece — and the launchpad for a maul.
Ruck & maul
Two contact phases after a tackle: ruck = ball on the ground, you clear it; maul = ball-carrier upright, you drive. The grunt work that wins collisions.
The Eagles
The men's and women's national teams, named for the bald eagle and playing in navy, red and white.
MLR
Major League Rugby — the professional 15s league across the United States and Canada, the engine room of the modern Eagles.
Pacific Nations Cup
The Eagles' main annual tournament, against Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa and Tonga — and a route to the World Cup.
Sevens
The short Olympic form of the game — a long-standing American strong suit and a feeder of athletes into the XV game.
Capped
Having played a full international for the Eagles. The mark of a true Test player.

Frequently asked

The classics on building your dream XV.

The most-googled questions, and the ones most asked in our inbox.

How do I build my dream USA Eagles XV online?
Pick a tactical formation (classic, attacking, defensive, kicking game), then fill all 15 positions from 1 to 15 by drafting from thousands of players: current Eagles, Major League Rugby stars, international icons, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up required, 100% free.
What is the USA men's national rugby team called?
The United States men's national rugby union team is nicknamed the Eagles, after the bald eagle. They play in navy, red and white. The women's national team is known as the Women's Eagles. USA Rugby is the sport's national governing body.
How is a rugby union XV officially built?
A rugby XV is made of 8 forwards (1 loosehead prop, 2 hooker, 3 tighthead prop, 4 and 5 locks, 6 and 7 flankers, 8 number eight) and 7 backs (9 scrum-half, 10 fly-half, 11 left wing, 12 inside centre, 13 outside centre, 14 right wing, 15 full-back). Plus reserves on the bench. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar exactly.
Did the USA secure a spot at the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
Yes. The Eagles qualified for Rugby World Cup 2027 in September 2025 after beating Samoa 29-13 in Denver, in the Pacific Nations Cup play-off. It marks a return to the global stage after they missed the 2023 tournament — their ninth World Cup appearance. RWC 2027 runs in Australia from 1 October to 13 November, expanded to 24 teams.
Did the USA really win Olympic gold in rugby?
Yes — and they still hold the title. The United States won Olympic gold in fifteen-a-side rugby at both the 1920 Antwerp and 1924 Paris Games, beating France in the Paris final. Because XV rugby never returned to the Olympics, the USA are technically the reigning Olympic champions. In the modern era the country competes in Olympic sevens.
Which competitions do the Eagles play in?
The Eagles' main annual tournament is the Pacific Nations Cup, against Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa and Tonga. They also play July and November Test windows and chase World Cup qualification through the Americas and Pacific pathway. The men's World Cup comes home to the USA in 2031.
What is the top rugby league in the United States?
Major League Rugby (MLR) is the premier professional 15s competition in North America, founded in 2017 with its first season in 2018. It spans the United States plus Canada and is the main pathway for Eagles-eligible players. The New England Free Jacks are the dominant modern force, winning three straight MLR Championships.
Can I create a team with my friends and family?
Of course. Upload photos of your buddies, your dad, your sister, your cousin, your college coach, your weekend club side, and slot them into any position. Perfect for the club banquet, the office team-build, the bachelor party, or just a group-chat debate. Custom cards are unlimited and free.
Why is the next decade so big for American rugby?
Because the World Cup is coming home. World Rugby awarded the USA the men's Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women's in 2033. No nation has a longer runway — building toward two home World Cups makes every Eagles cap, every MLR season and every young player matter more than ever.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exception. Building, sharing, exports, custom card uploads, tactical simulation: everything is free. No sign-up required, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Build as many XVs as you want.
Does TeamBranch exist for other rugby nations?
Yes, dozens of local editions including New Zealand (All Blacks), France (Les Bleus), South Africa (Springboks), Australia (Wallabies), Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Argentina (Los Pumas), Fiji and Japan (Brave Blossoms). Each edition has its own player database and local terminology.
