XV

From loosehead to fullback, draft your fifteen in black.

TeamBranch reproduces the official structure of a rugby union XV: 8 forwards (the pack), 7 backs (the line), a captain, a tactical formation. Fifteen positions, fifteen calls, from number 1 to number 15.

Draft from the current All Blacks (Beauden Barrett, Will Jordan, Ardie Savea, Scott Barrett, Caleb Clarke), the black-jersey immortals (Jonah Lomu, Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Colin Meads, Sean Fitzpatrick), the stars of Super Rugby Pacific and the Bunnings NPC, or pick from the Springboks, Wallabies, Pumas, Six Nations. You can also build a side made entirely of mates for the Saturday club run.

The Black Jersey Times · special All Blacks edition
N° 122 · 1903-2026

A hundred and twenty-three years of All Blacks, a hundred and twenty-three ways to imagine them.

From the first Test against Australia at the SCG on 15 August 1903 (won 22–3) to the heartbreak of Saint-Denis on 28 October 2023, the men in black have been the gold standard of world rugby: 3 World Cups, 26 Rugby Championships, the highest winning percentage in sport. On TeamBranch you can replay every generation — or rewrite the finals that got away.

1987 → 2003 · The first dynasty

Whetton, Fitzpatrick, Lomu

The first Rugby World Cup, played at Eden Park in 1987, ended with David Kirk lifting the Webb Ellis Cup after beating France 29–9. Under Brian Lochore then Laurie Mains, the men in black redefined the modern game. Sean Fitzpatrick at hooker (record 92 caps), Zinzan Brooke at number 8, Michael Jones the prototype flanker.

Then came Jonah Lomu. The 1995 World Cup in South Africa: four tries against England in the semi-final, the planet meeting a 1.96m, 119kg force of nature. New Zealand lost the final to Mandela's Springboks (15–12, food poisoning) — but rugby was changed forever.

2004 → 2015 · The Henry-Hansen era

McCaw, Carter, back-to-back

The pain of 2007 (quarter-final exit to France, 18–20 in Cardiff) forged a culture. Graham Henry, Wayne Smith, Steve Hansen as a coaching trio. Richie McCaw captain for 110 Tests (record-breaking). Dan Carter, the perfect 10. Two World Cups in a row — at home in 2011 (8–7 vs France, agony) and at Twickenham in 2015 (34–17 vs Australia, masterclass).

The 2011 final remains the closest the All Blacks ever came to losing a final they were favourite for. Stephen Donald, fourth-choice fly-half pulled out of a whitebait fishing trip, kicked the winning penalty. Pure New Zealand.

2016 → 2026 · Foster and Razor

The reset, then the rise

The post-McCaw years were turbulent. Ian Foster survived the 2022 Boks whitewash and got the team to the 2023 final in Paris — lost 11–12 to South Africa, Sam Cane's red card and the missed Mo'unga drop. Brutal.

2024 brought Scott "Razor" Robertson, the seven-time Super Rugby champion with the Crusaders, the breakdancing coach. New game plan, refreshed squad, Ardie Savea as captain, Will Jordan finishing everything. Heading to Australia 2027 as challengers — and that suits this group fine.

Architecture of the XV

How is a rugby union team built?

A rugby XV runs out with 15 starters and 8 reserves: the pack and the line, the forwards and the backs. Each jersey number maps to a specific role. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar for your lineup, one to fifteen.

The pack (1 to 8) is about set-piece and contact: scrums, lineouts, mauls, rucks. The backs (9 to 15) are about movement: handling, territory, running lines, finishing. All of it under a captain, who can wear any number.

Front row · 1, 2, 3
Loosehead, hooker, tighthead. The foundation: scrum and lineout. Raw power: Ethan de Groot, Codie Taylor, Tyrel Lomax.
Locks · 4, 5
The lineout towers. Jumpers, mauling, big hits. Scott Barrett, Patrick Tuipulotu, Sam Whitelock (148 caps, retired hero).
Loose forwards · 6, 7, 8
The flankers and the No. 8. Versatility, breakdown, jackalling. Ardie Savea at openside, Wallace Sititi at 8, Sam Cane the warrior.
Halves · 9, 10
The brains: halfback (Cam Roigard, Cortez Ratima, TJ Perenara) and first five-eighth (Beauden Barrett, Damian McKenzie). Vision, pass, kick.
Midfield · 12, 13
The second five distributes, the centre hits the line. Jordie Barrett, Rieko Ioane, Quinn Tupaea. The attacking line that breaks defences.
Back three · 11, 14, 15
Left wing, right wing, fullback. Pure pace, aerial work, finishing. Caleb Clarke, Will Jordan, Sevu Reece, Stephen Perofeta.
NZ rugby lexicon

The words to know to talk rugby like a Mt Smart regular.

Try
The supreme act: ground the ball over the opposition try line. Worth 5 points, plus 2 for the conversion. The rugby equivalent of a touchdown — but you have to ground it yourself.
Scrum
The iconic set piece: 8 vs 8, hooker in the middle, props either side, locks behind. Engagement on the halfback's feed. The Boks-AB scrum battles define eras.
Lineout
Restart after the ball goes into touch: an alignment of jumpers, the hooker throws, locks get lifted. A tactical conquest set piece — and the best place to call a maul.
Ruck & maul
Two contact phases after a tackle: ruck = ball on the ground, you clear; maul = ball-carrier upright, you drive. The Boks love a maul, the All Blacks live for the counter-ruck.
Drop goal & penalty
The drop (3 pts) is kicked in open play, ball must bounce first. The penalty (3 pts) punishes a foul. Jonny Wilkinson's 2003 final drop still hurts in this country.
Offside & knock-on
Offside = ahead of the ball-carrier. Knock-on = ball spilled forward. The two basic mistakes that end a phase.
Tackle
The defensive weapon. Choke tackle, chop tackle, shoulder hit, high tackle (penalty). The Boks love the dominant collision, the All Blacks the smart double-hit.
Step & offload
The Kiwi art. Beat your man with the step, then offload before the deck. Beauden Barrett, Damian McKenzie, Caleb Clarke — the school of Christian Cullen and Jeff Wilson.
Wooden spoon
The "prize" handed to the last-placed side in the Rugby Championship — the team that loses all six matches. Argentina has worn it most often since 2012.
Five eras · five iconic XVs

Each generation has its faces, its system, its rivalries. On TeamBranch you can rebuild these XVs exactly, or change one name and see what happens. What if Cullen had stayed fit in 1999? If Carter hadn't broken his leg in 2007? Answer in 60 seconds.

Frequently asked

The classics on building your dream XV.

The most-googled questions and the ones most asked in our inbox.

How do I build my dream All Blacks XV online?
Pick a tactical formation (classic, attacking, defensive, kicking game), then fill all 15 positions from 1 to 15 by drafting from 12,000 players: current All Blacks, legends, Super Rugby Pacific stars, international icons, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up required, 100% free.
How is a rugby union XV officially built?
A rugby XV is made of 8 forwards (1 loosehead prop, 2 hooker, 3 tighthead prop, 4 and 5 locks, 6 and 7 flankers, 8 number eight) and 7 backs (9 halfback, 10 first five-eighth, 11 left wing, 12 second five-eighth, 13 centre, 14 right wing, 15 fullback). Plus 8 reserves on the bench. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar exactly.
Can I build a squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
Yes — this is by far the most popular use right now. RWC 2027 runs in Australia from 1 October to 13 November, expanded to 24 teams. You can draft multiple hypotheses: Razor's all-stars, post-Super Rugby blooded XV, all-time All Blacks, Crusaders-heavy core, post-2023 revenge XV, World XV. Editable and shareable, update it before every Test.
Can I create a team with my mates or whānau?
Of course. 800,000 custom XVs have already been built. Upload photos of your mates, your dad, your sister, your cousin, your club coach, your Saturday morning Heartland XV, and slot them into any position. Perfect for the club final, the work team-build, the stag do, or just a WhatsApp group chirp.
What about the Black Ferns?
Women's rugby is integrated 100%. Build the Black Ferns with Ruahei Demant, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, Sarah Hirini, Ruby Tui, Stacey Fluhler, Kennedy Tukuafu — the side that won the World Cup at home in 2022 and is hunting the 2025 title in England. Six-time world champions and counting.
Which club competitions are covered?
Super Rugby Pacific (all 5 NZ franchises: Crusaders, Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Highlanders, plus Moana Pasifika and the Aussie sides), the Bunnings NPC (14 provinces), the Heartland Championship (12 unions), plus France's Top 14, England's Premiership and the URC. More than 800 club cards in total.
What tactical formations does TeamBranch support?
Four: Classic (balanced), Attacking (loose forwards, fast wingers, ball-in-hand), Defensive (heavy pack, tactical halfback, kicking game), Kicking Game (territory rugby, dominant first five, box kicks). You can switch at any time and your XV reorganises automatically on the interactive field.
What's the difference between rugby union XV and rugby sevens?
Rugby union (15 players, 80 minutes in 2 halves) is the classic format: Rugby World Cup, Rugby Championship, Super Rugby. Sevens (7 players, 14 minutes) is the short Olympic format. The Black Ferns Sevens are double Olympic champions (Tokyo 2021, Paris 2024). TeamBranch covers both — Sevens drops autumn 2026.
Why have the All Blacks only won three World Cups when they're so dominant?
Three titles (1987, 2011, 2015), three finals (lost 1995 in Joburg, lost 2023 in Paris) — best record in history with a winning percentage above 77%. The mystery is the 16-year gap between 1987 and 2011: lost the 1995 final to South Africa (Mandela's jersey), shock quarter-final exits in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Won back-to-back in 2011 and 2015 to settle the question. 2027 is the chance for a fourth star.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exception. Composition, sharing, exports, custom card uploads, tactical simulation: everything is free. No sign-up required, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Build as many XVs as you want.
Does TeamBranch exist for other rugby nations?
Yes, 96 local editions including France (Les Bleus), South Africa (Springboks), Australia (Wallabies), Ireland (Men in Green), England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Argentina (Los Pumas), Fiji, Japan (Brave Blossoms). Each edition has its own player database and local terminology.
