The Handball Federation of India (HFI), founded in the 1970s, is the national governing body. Handball in India has steadily grown, particularly in Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu — states with strong sports academies and college programmes. The National Handball Championship features state representative teams. India competes in the Asian Games, Asian Handball Championship, and South Asian Games regularly. Although still developing relative to the top Asian nations (Korea, Qatar, Japan), India has a growing handball culture.

HFI and the state system

The Handball Federation of India (HFI) was established as the national governing body. Handball developed primarily through state sports academies, with Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu emerging as strongholds. The National Handball Championship was launched, and India began competing at the Asian Games and Asian Championship.

Over the last decades, handball has grown through state sports academies. Sports Authority of India (SAI) supports handball development, and state academies in Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka produce most of the national team. India is among the strongest South Asian Games handball nations, alongside Pakistan and Bangladesh. The target: qualification for the 2027 World Championship and continued Asian Games competition.
