Pre-season
Alright, sit your ass down for two minutes because tonight we're not messing around, we're diving headfirst into a sold-out arena that smells like rubber and sweat, with 20,000 fans ready to lose their damn voices. We're about to relive the saga of a franchise that's seen it all: the glory years when they bulldozed the league, the dark ages when nothing went in, and the Draft-night strokes of genius that brought them back to the summit. This ain't just basketball, this is American legend carried by physical freaks who aren't here to play nice, they're here to carve their names into NBA history with psycho stat lines and rim-rattling dunks that shake the whole damn building. The team with no name, baby! Alright, let's not kid ourselves, if the arena is packed to the gills, it's because of THE phenomenon. This girl isn't just a basketball player, she's a walking cheat code on the hardwood: give it up for Sydney Sweeney! Picture this: standing at 161 cm, but she handles the rock with the agility of a 5'10" point guard and launches missiles from 30 feet like she's at shootaround. When she attacks the paint, it's simple, she's a freight train: either you get out of the way, or you end up on her poster doing the rounds on social media for a week straight. And the most terrifying thing about her? It's not the stats, it's not the size, it's the calm. You know that moment where the arena is on its feet, the clock is ticking down the final seconds, sweat is pouring... And she's just chewing her gum like she's waiting for the bus? Then she loads up. And drains it. Stone cold. In front of 20,000 people on the verge of cardiac arrest. That's what a franchise player is: the girl who carries everyone on her shoulders and still makes it look easy. Moment of truth, folks. You see the girl at the end of the bench, the one who looks completely lost among the giants? That's Inde Navarrette. An actor in civilian life. The kind of guy who handles their battered script better than a basketball, and who somehow ended up on a professional roster because the coach "had a vision." A vision, ladies and gentlemen. Probably somewhere between her second and third mojito at the All-Star Weekend party. Inde Navarrette has a unique playing style: she runs a lot, understands very little, and has an unfortunate tendency to treat the tragic hero and the basketball exact same way. The fans already love her. Not for her stats (she has none) but because every time she steps on the court, it's Christmas morning. Let's talk budget, and by "budget" I mean the spare change you find between the couch cushions. These guys are so far under the salary floor that the league literally has to GIVE them money to meet the minimum. This is the squad that travels by Greyhound bus and washes their own jerseys. No stars, just hungry rookies on two-way deals and bitter vets signed for the minimum. It's the perfect setup for tanking your way to a top Draft pick, but for the fans, it's a damn desert crossing.
Matchday 1 — vs Detroit Engine-Roar
89-133 (L)
Ohhh no. Corner three, Detroit Engine-Roar in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Right through the window. Sydney Sweeney to Madison Beer on the roll, and the help was a half step late. The songwriter had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Detroit Engine-Roar with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
You can teach a lot of things at this level, but not lateral quickness. Inde Navarrette is doing a fine traffic cone impression. Slap across the wrist, and the crew saw every bit of it. Mia Khalifa pays for that one.
Cross court, on a rope, from the actor. In this league that pass earns a contract, and he does it on his night off. The other bench sent their best perimeter stopper out on Mia Khalifa, and they are learning in real time that it will not be enough tonight. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Two points in every gym in America except this one, and Mia Khalifa is walking back with both hands on his head.
Halftime. Sydney Sweeney's hair is completely soaked, like climbing out of a pool. Anecdote: Sydney Sweeney threw up before her first pro game. No more pre-game burgers ever since. And now, our halftime TV game show Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! To win a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong, text HOOPS to 555-0066 and answer this question: 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' Play resumes. The DJ drops a beat to hype up the crowd.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Mia Khalifa threw it before the help even committed. The songwriter runs a dribble handoff with the timing of a fifteen-year vet. Not bad for somebody who does this on weekends. Catch on the block, shoulder into the chest, one dribble, and Mia Khalifa finishes over the top. Textbook.
A cruel spin-out for the film producer, and whatever that day job is, tonight it came with a brand new way to break your heart. Another extra possession courtesy of the assistant, a man who evidently boxes out at work too. Some habits do not clock out. The assistant just made the extra pass with a clean look of his own! You do not run into that kind of selflessness at the office! Stepback three from the songwriter, ice in his veins. You cannot teach that, and apparently you cannot keep it out of the workforce either.
Detroit Engine-Roar again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Eve rises up and REJECTS the layup off the glass, and now he is barking at the whole building about it.
More second chance points for Detroit Engine-Roar, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Screen, hesitation, delivery, Mia Khalifa drops it off perfectly for Madison Beer diving to the rim. OHHHH, that one died in the air! Madison Beer put nothing into it and the front rim eats the floater.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Detroit Engine-Roar with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Dribble alive, patient, patient, and then Mia Khalifa slips it to Eve right in the pocket. Surgical. REJECTED! Eve takes it in and gets it sent straight back into his own chest.
Somebody explain how the film producer reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. OHHHHH HE SNATCHED HIS ANKLES! Eve left him on the hardwood and this building is SHAKING! Fifth possession this half where Eve has been left to bail everybody out with the clock at zero. He cannot keep doing this alone.
You want basketball IQ? Ask the actor, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. A cut with that timing from the assistant? He is on the clock somewhere else all week and he still found time to learn the two-man game. Prayer from Eve. Not answered.
Mia Khalifa takes a sip of water and spits it right back out. Inde Navarrette doesn't drink. Throat too tight. And here is the answer to our game Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! Wanda Sue Beezley of Rooster Comb, South Dakota, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' The answer was of course forty-one, and three of them open nothing at all. Wanda Sue takes home a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong! I got a text from Mia Khalifa after the game. Just kidding. Nobody texts me. We're out! And now, 'House Hunters: Broom Closet Edition.' Cozy open concept.
Matchday 2 — vs Miami Heart-Attack
76-118 (L)
Cold blooded from Miami Heart-Attack, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
The stunt performer just ran a give and go to perfection on national television! Somebody go tell his boss what he does after hours! Twenty-four seconds of standing around, and Mia Khalifa has to eat the last two of them. Possession wasted long before the shot went up.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Miami Heart-Attack, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Across half court, a quick survey, a point to the weak side, and Sydney Sweeney drops it off to Mia Khalifa on time and on target. A full spin move through traffic from the stunt performer! Whatever they teach in that trade, footwork is apparently part of it. Up goes the shot from Mia Khalifa and that is nothing but AIR, and every soul in this building saw it happen.
Bucket for Miami Heart-Attack. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
The locker room. Madison Beer sprawls out full-length on the bench. I've been told Madison Beer always puts her left shoe on first. The one day she switched, gave up 40 points. And now, our halftime TV game show Big Brother-in-Law! To win a novelty license plate that spells HOTDOG incorrectly, text HOOPS to 555-0296 and answer this question: 'How many pockets can cargo shorts have before they legally become furniture?' Back at it! The coach said two words. Two words that were enough.
Madison Beer is barking at the official, arms out, eyes wide, and there it is. The T comes flying in. Two technicals and the songwriter is out. Whatever happened at work today, he clearly brought every bit of it to the arena.
Dagger from Miami Heart-Attack. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Madison Beer eats the contact so Inde Navarrette can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. That little shot is what keeps guards employed in this league, and Inde Navarrette has it on a string tonight.
Turnover, layup, Miami Heart-Attack straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Madison Beer stopped the break and started a much bigger problem. Two free throws, the ball right back, and the officials heading to the monitor.
The film producer makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. A cut with that timing from the assistant? He is on the clock somewhere else all week and he still found time to learn the two-man game. Two on the shot clock and the ball ends up with the assistant, which is how you get a twenty-eight footer off the wrong foot.
Hand check on Eve. That is a foul in this league every single time. The assistant is a single whistle from disqualification and he is STILL sliding his feet into the paint. Courage or a very bad week at work.
Ball up the floor, change of speed right at the logo, and Sydney Sweeney already has the defense a full step behind. The songwriter pulls out the crossover of his life, and Monday morning he clocks in like nothing ever happened. Shot clock at one, and Madison Beer just has to throw something at the rim. Nothing doing.
Total control. Sydney Sweeney has this thing on a string. The defender planted his feet, and Madison Beer said thank you very much and drove straight through his front pocket. Madison Beer probes to the right, pulls the string, and rises over a helpless closeout from twenty six feet. Splash.
Push the pace! Sydney Sweeney grabs it and hits Eve in stride before the defense can even match up. Madison Beer sets the pick and DIVES to the cup. Eve lays it right on his hands in traffic! Perfect drop-off from Sydney Sweeney, and Madison Beer answers with... whatever that was. Off the glass, off the rim, and gone.
Mia Khalifa hurls her water bottle at the wall. Sydney Sweeney flinches but doesn't react. And here is the answer to our game Big Brother-in-Law! Peggy Ann Hollifield of Sassafras Gap, South Carolina, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many pockets can cargo shorts have before they legally become furniture?' The answer was of course eleven, and at twelve you have to register them with the county. Peggy Ann takes home a novelty license plate that spells HOTDOG incorrectly! I spent the evening explaining basketball rules to my new intern. He still thinks you can walk with the ball. See you soon. And now: '911: My Cat Climbed on Top of the Wardrobe.'
Matchday 3 — vs Orlando Magic-Beans
76-121 (L)
Small thing, a jump ball, but Eve winning that tip means we set the tone. Coaches script that first play for a reason.
Dagger from Orlando Magic-Beans. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Eve gets driven under the rim and the offensive board goes the other way. Fresh shot clock for them.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Orlando Magic-Beans in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Four on five while Sydney Sweeney lies there waiting on a whistle that is never coming. That is the real cost of the flop.
Halftime. Inde Navarrette wolfs down an energy bar in two bites. Did you know Inde Navarrette keeps a photo of her dog in her right shoe? It's a Bichon. And now, our halftime TV game show The Swap Meet Half Hour! To win a car dealership balloon man with no fan, text HOOPS to 555-1318 and answer this question: 'What is the top speed of a mascot running in oversized shoes?' Act two! The bench players are fired up, the starters too.
Clean feed from Sydney Sweeney, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. The assistant turns clean out of two bodies in the paint. That is nowhere in the job description and yet here we are. Nobody moved, nobody cut, nobody set a screen, so Eve launches a contested jumper with the horn already going. Ugly offense.
That is the shot Mia Khalifa wants every trip down the floor, it drops nine nights out of ten, and tonight is the tenth. Second-chance points are how you steal games on the road, and Sydney Sweeney has now cleaned up four misses tonight. Sydney Sweeney drives, draws two bodies, and swings it one more time to the corner. That is the pass nobody is required to make. This building is SHAKING. Mia Khalifa just stepped into a logo three like it was a warmup rep.
Everybody in the arena knew the stepback was coming from Sydney Sweeney, and not one single soul could do anything about it. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the film producer! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Iso time. Sydney Sweeney up top, one jab step, and the defender is already on SKATES. Offensive foul on the film producer. He gets through an entire work week without a single collision and then does THIS on a basketball floor.
Turnover, layup, Orlando Magic-Beans straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Court vision like that on the actor is absurd. Whatever the day job pays him, the assist numbers say he is badly underpriced. Stonewalled at the top of the square! The big man meets Mia Khalifa up there and returns it with interest.
Bucket for Orlando Magic-Beans. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Sydney Sweeney whips that pass one-handed on the move and the roll man gathers it through contact. Filthy. Count it! Mia Khalifa caught that thing in traffic and put it through the net before gravity could file a complaint.
Bent double with his hands on his knees, Mia Khalifa takes one breath, straightens up and points at the coach who drew the play in the huddle. The coach nods once, no smile. Eve pounds the man's shoulder anyway. Respect, delivered at maximum volume.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Orlando Magic-Beans with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The film producer just made the extra pass with a clean look of his own! You do not run into that kind of selflessness at the office! The stunt performer tried the teardrop and never got it to the rim. Turns out soft touch does not come standard with that day job.
Mia Khalifa refuses the coach's embrace. Madison Beer accepts it but her body is stiff. And here is the answer to our game show The Swap Meet Half Hour! Lurleen Ratliff of Sopchoppy Flats, Florida, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the top speed of a mascot running in oversized shoes?' The answer was of course nine miles an hour downhill, four uphill, and zero once the head falls off. Lurleen therefore wins a car dealership balloon man with no fan! I learned tonight that Mia Khalifa used to be a film producer. That explains the unique running style. We're done here. Up next: 'Top Chef: Microwave Edition.' Bon appetit.
Matchday 4 — vs Philadelphia Injury-Report
85-128 (L)
The stunt performer just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. OHHHH, what a read by Eve! He never even glanced at the rim and it is CASH on the other end. Rises, releases, and Madison Beer sends the ball through the exact patch of sky where the rim is not.
Eight seconds to cross one line and the film producer could not manage it. In fairness, nobody presses him at work.
Bucket for Philadelphia Injury-Report. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
The film producer just created his own space with a stepback. Somewhere a scout is spitting coffee all over his notepad. Count them with me: one step, two steps, and a third one nobody asked for. The official has seen enough of Sydney Sweeney.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Philadelphia Injury-Report, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
End of the first act. Mia Khalifa is puffing like a steam engine heading back. Exclusive: Mia Khalifa was caught reading a philosophy book on the bench. It was Nietzsche. And now, our halftime TV game show Press Your Luck Harder! To win a bumper sticker collection covering one entire tailgate, text HOOPS to 555-0362 and answer this question: 'In what year was the jump ball invented by accident during a barn raising?' The locker room empties, the court fills up. Act 2.
The big rolls, the defense collapses, and Sydney Sweeney punishes it with a read most guys never even see. Down, up, and gone for Inde Navarrette. The rim is just toying with him now.
The zone is set with Mia Khalifa anchoring the middle of it and there is NOWHERE to go! Active hands, quiet stat sheet. Madison Beer has been poking at everything that moves for two straight quarters.
Day job, then this: the stunt performer reads a rolling big like a coach with twenty years on the bench. Missed layup for the songwriter and the whole arena groans as one. Great hands in the day job, apparently they do not travel. Nobody put a body on Sydney Sweeney and he made them pay, tipping it to himself and coming down with two hands in the trees. Rebounding is effort, and effort is apparently what the film producer does for a living. Second chance points, all guts.
Cold blooded from Philadelphia Injury-Report, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
OHHHH he went BACKDOOR! Inde Navarrette never broke stride and he has the ball UNDER THE RIM! The actor spots up in the corner and drills it like it is nothing. Somewhere a shooting coach is crying tears of joy.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Philadelphia Injury-Report with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The actor grabbed a full handful of jersey and the crew counted every finger. He does not get away with that at work either. Straight back up. Inde Navarrette does not say one word, he just stares down the entire opposing bench, and that says plenty.
Turnover, layup, Philadelphia Injury-Report straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
A chair knocked flat, an assistant coach holding somebody back by the jersey, that whole row completely unhinged. That is the Mia Khalifa effect. The chasedown is the hardest hustle play in this sport, and Mia Khalifa just made it look routine.
Back at the shop they have got this review up on every phone with the assistant in the frame, and nobody is getting any work done. Cold, clinical, and correct. That monitor just took everything from Eve.
Sydney Sweeney watches the crowd file out in silence. Mia Khalifa prefers not to look. And here is the answer to our game show Press Your Luck Harder! Bobbi Sue Yarborough of Sawmill Bottom, Georgia, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'In what year was the jump ball invented by accident during a barn raising?' The answer was of course 1871, in a hayloft, by two men arguing about a rooster. Bobbi Sue therefore wins a bumper sticker collection covering one entire tailgate! During the game, my colleague ordered sushi. It arrived at the final buzzer. Perfect timing. That's a wrap! Coming up: 'What Would You Do: People Who Say Hello in the Elevator.' Exposing the truth.
Matchday 5 — vs Phoenix No-Defense
75-120 (L)
Tip is UP and Madison Beer gets there first! We are underway and it is our ball.
Ball moves. Mia Khalifa to Sydney Sweeney, on time and on target. Pass, cut, catch, wide open. Four things in about a second and a half from Sydney Sweeney. Stuck holding it as the clock bleeds out, Sydney Sweeney fades away from twenty-six feet, and it is not close.
More second chance points for Phoenix No-Defense, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
No hero ball here: Inde Navarrette takes what the defense gives and moves it along. Off the pin-down comes the assistant with nobody inside a zip code. Somebody out there knows how to use a screen, and it is not who you would guess. That stepback is unguardable once the drive gets sold, and Eve has had that defender guessing wrong all night long.
Dagger from Phoenix No-Defense. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Break. Mia Khalifa collapses next to the vending machine. Did you know Mia Khalifa knits to unwind? Made a scarf in Phoenix No-Defense's colors. By accident, obviously. And now, our halftime TV game show Countdown to Nothing in Particular! To win a jigsaw puzzle with all four corner pieces missing, text HOOPS to 555-1207 and answer this question: 'How many hot dogs does a mascot eat before he stops enjoying it?' Jump ball to restart. Let the second half begin!
Inde Navarrette feels the contact, spins off that shoulder, and the defender is left hugging a whole lot of nothing. Two points left on the floor by Inde Navarrette, and those are exactly the ones that come back to bite you in the fourth.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Phoenix No-Defense with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
Second pass beats the rotation, Inde Navarrette to Eve, and the closeout gets there about half a second too late. A timeout is coming, because no defense recovers from watching Eve do that to one of their own.
Bucket for Phoenix No-Defense. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
Set called, Inde Navarrette waved out to the corner, and Sydney Sweeney watches the spacing open up like a front door. Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the actor made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. Third one of these from Inde Navarrette this quarter, third time the arc is wrong. The lane is not open real estate anymore.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Phoenix No-Defense, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Watch the change of pace from Sydney Sweeney, half speed into full speed in one step, and that is a blow-by every time. Not close, not warm, not anywhere for Sydney Sweeney, straight into the hands of a defender who never had to leave his feet.
The stunt performer fouled a shooter behind the arc. Three free throws, and a timeout that is going to be extremely unpleasant. Mia Khalifa throws his head back, because he knows exactly what it means. His minutes are somebody else's decision now.
Full stop, full sprint, and the actor is in the paint! Nobody back at the workplace is going to believe this one. AROUND the cylinder and OUT! Inde Navarrette cannot believe it, and neither can this building.
Sydney Sweeney launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. They do not teach that in the stunt performer handbook, and yet here we are. Beautiful little exchange. So close. Sydney Sweeney can only stare at the iron.
Sydney Sweeney leaves the court at a jog. Inde Navarrette stays there, planted at center court, motionless. And here is the answer to our game show Countdown to Nothing in Particular! Norma Jean Sprinkle of Butterbean Flats, Alaska, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many hot dogs does a mascot eat before he stops enjoying it?' The answer was of course nine, and the tenth one is purely professional. Norma Jean therefore wins a jigsaw puzzle with all four corner pieces missing! Confession: I nearly fell asleep during the second quarter. The third woke me right up. Until next time! Up next: 'Kitchen Nightmares: Corporate Cafeteria.' This is gonna be good.
Matchday 6 — vs Los Angeles Nursing-Home
92-131 (L)
Both benches are up, jerseys are getting pulled, and three teammates are dragging Inde Navarrette toward half court.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Los Angeles Nursing-Home with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The film producer is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. Ice in his veins for a guy who answers to actor the rest of the week. Professional shot, amateur resume. The stunt performer had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
The film producer pops to the arc and buries it, and nobody in this building believes that man clocks in somewhere in the morning. The stunt performer launched one from the logo as the horn sounded. In fairness, nobody in that huddle gave him a better option.
Not an inch to spare on the endline, but Mia Khalifa keeps both feet in bounds and the help gets there a beat too late. The stunt performer had two points in the bank and the iron took them right back out. You do not get heartbreak like that in the day job.
Halftime. Madison Beer's hair is completely soaked, like climbing out of a pool. Exclusive info: Madison Beer is banned for life from the McDonald's near the arena. The details remain murky. And now, our halftime TV game show High Rollers Low Ceilings! To win a beach towel printed with a map of a landlocked county, text HOOPS to 555-1024 and answer this question: 'How many timeouts can a coach call before the crowd revolts?' Both teams retake the hardwood. Everything is still up for grabs.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Los Angeles Nursing-Home, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
OHHHH the pocket pass! Sydney Sweeney splits the coverage and the roll man is loose under the basket! That is the shot chart lying to you. Mia Khalifa did everything right on this possession and has zero points to show for it.
Cold blooded from Los Angeles Nursing-Home, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Oldest play in the book and it still works: Sydney Sweeney passes, the defender peeks at the ball, and that one beat is the whole possession. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the film producer! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
More second chance points for Los Angeles Nursing-Home, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Sydney Sweeney walks it up, two fingers in the air, and the whole offense shifts on his command. One little shoulder dip from Eve and the guy guarding him turned into a traffic cone in real time. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the assistant! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Los Angeles Nursing-Home again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Somebody explain how the film producer reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. STOP AND GO! Eve hit the brakes, hit the gas, and the lane opened up like a garage door. Perfect arc. Eve makes seven feet of rim protection completely irrelevant.
The stunt performer makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. Dribble handoff from Sydney Sweeney, and the defender gets wiped out on the exchange! Unselfish basketball. Madison Beer passes up a good shot and hands Eve a GREAT one. Soft touch from Eve, the floater drops right over the big man. Cash.
OHHHH the tension! Nobody is sitting, nobody is blinking, all of it rides on Eve. Brutal for the assistant, who owned the shot of a lifetime for about ninety seconds. Back to the day job with nothing but the story.
Mia Khalifa's eyes are glassy. Madison Beer mumbles 'we'll get them next time' without believing it. And here is the answer to our game show High Rollers Low Ceilings! Marlene Trickett of Cornsilk Junction, South Dakota, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many timeouts can a coach call before the crowd revolts?' The answer was of course three, and the fourth one starts a conversation nobody enjoys. Marlene therefore wins a beach towel printed with a map of a landlocked county! Tonight I yelled so loud the guy in the next booth asked me to keep it down. Mid-game. That's a wrap for tonight. Coming up: 'The Amazing Race: Subway Line 13.' Viewer discretion advised.
Matchday 7 — vs Toronto Border-Patrol
75-120 (L)
The referee tosses it high and Eve rises late, which is exactly how you win one of these. Timing over height, every single time.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Toronto Border-Patrol in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Eight seconds off the shot clock and Sydney Sweeney has not wasted one of them, the ball reaching Mia Khalifa precisely where the play wanted it. Down screen, and Mia Khalifa curls hard into the middle of the floor with a full step of daylight. Easy read. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the stunt performer! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Turnover, layup, Toronto Border-Patrol straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
The crossover comes, Madison Beer bites hard, and the lane opens up like the front door was left unlocked. Two on the board for the visitors, and Mia Khalifa knows it before the officials even get their hands up.
That's a cut. Mia Khalifa stumbles slightly reaching the locker room. Did you know Mia Khalifa started basketball because she was terrible at soccer? Sometimes failure leads to greatness. And now, our halftime TV game show Name That Smell! To win a barbecue apron that reads KISS THE FORKLIFT OPERATOR, text HOOPS to 555-0357 and answer this question: 'Which is heavier, a pound of orange slices or a pound of team spirit?' The tunnel spits the players out. The war resumes.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Toronto Border-Patrol, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
The extra pass! Mia Khalifa had the look, gave it up anyway, and Eve buries it. BANG! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was IN for Eve!
Swing, swing, and Sydney Sweeney finds Mia Khalifa on the wing before the help can even turn its head. Mia Khalifa comes flying off that screen and he is WIDE open! That is another catch and shoot triple for Mia Khalifa, and you can see the closeouts getting more desperate every single trip.
Bucket for Toronto Border-Patrol. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
A fistful of jersey to stop the break, and the bill comes due for Inde Navarrette: two at the line plus possession. Not one hand went for the basketball, just a forearm through the chest of Inde Navarrette. That is the textbook definition of unnecessary contact.
Dagger from Toronto Border-Patrol. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
The stunt performer makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. Inde Navarrette hands it off to Sydney Sweeney, slices through the seam, and the return pass is sitting there waiting at the rim. Inde Navarrette beat the clock by a tenth of a second and missed by about four feet. Technically legal, competitively pointless.
Somebody explain how the film producer reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. Sydney Sweeney just took a shoulder to the chest to buy Mia Khalifa half a second, and half a second in this league is an eternity. Pull-up from the elbow by Mia Khalifa, halfway down, spinning inside the iron, and it pops right back out.
Eve goes down like he was shot. No whistle. The crowd lets him hear every bit of it.
Huddle is tight, marker squeaking on the board, and Eve is already nodding before the coach finishes the sentence. Cut, screen, relocate, and there is Sydney Sweeney wide open in the corner. Nobody on that defense read one page of it.
Stone silence for one second, then Sydney Sweeney lets out something that is not really a word, more a sound from the basement of a human being. Eve answers with the same noise. The arena joins in. There is no language left in this building.
Eve and Inde Navarrette walk side by side without looking at each other. The silence is deafening. And here is the answer to our game Name That Smell! Odell Trippett of Broke Axle, Alaska, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'Which is heavier, a pound of orange slices or a pound of team spirit?' The answer was of course the orange slices, and it is not close. Odell takes home a barbecue apron that reads KISS THE FORKLIFT OPERATOR! Tonight I learned Eve used to be a film producer before basketball. Found out during a timeout. Threw me off completely. Thanks for being here. Now put down the remote, it's time for 'Wheel of Misfortune.'
Matchday 8 — vs Minnesota Ice-Wall
76-121 (L)
The actor makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. Mia Khalifa turns the corner off the screen from Eve, the help never rotates, and the lane is WIDE open! Court vision like that on the assistant is absurd. Whatever the day job pays him, the assist numbers say he is badly underpriced. Jab, jab, STEPBACK. Inde Navarrette snatched his ankles and let it go clean.
Straight to the logo at center court, Inde Navarrette plants both feet and flexes until the veins show. The bench is a pile of bodies and airborne headbands. An assistant coach has to be physically restrained by a trainer who is also celebrating.
Here is the part that never makes the highlight package: Sydney Sweeney controlling tempo, burning clock, hunting the mismatch the second one shows up. Left, right, gone. Mia Khalifa put that defender on skates and never even looked back. Two on the shot clock and the ball ends up with the stunt performer, which is how you get a twenty-eight footer off the wrong foot.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Inde Navarrette put that man in a blender and the third row felt it! Ohhh no. Inde Navarrette just walked. In front of everybody.
Watch the spacing there, Inde Navarrette hits Eve right in the shooting pocket and the possession stays alive. Here comes Madison Beer sprinting off the elbow. Eve slides it into his pocket and that chase defender is buried. Long and gone. Madison Beer floats the teardrop over everything and bangs it off the back iron.
Bucket for Minnesota Ice-Wall. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
First half is done. Sydney Sweeney is chugging Gatorade like it's water. Did you know? Sydney Sweeney tried to become a rapper before basketball. The world dodged a bullet. And now, our halftime TV game show Concentration on Something Else! To win a giant foam finger that points at the ground, text HOOPS to 555-0176 and answer this question: 'How many exits does a corn maze legally require?' The buzzer calls the players. Time for the show, act II.
You want basketball IQ? Ask the film producer, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. Ice in his veins for a guy who answers to songwriter the rest of the week. Professional shot, amateur resume. The assistant launched one from the logo as the horn sounded. In fairness, nobody in that huddle gave him a better option.
Cold blooded from Minnesota Ice-Wall, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Cross court, on a rope, from the film producer. In this league that pass earns a contract, and he does it on his night off. The stunt performer takes the baseline and bends an entire defense out of shape. Absolutely absurd stuff in this building tonight. Long miss from the stunt performer and the rebound goes the other way, but let the record show that most people in that line of work never even get to take that shot.
Mia Khalifa gets it on the reversal and now this defense is rotating, scrambling and losing ground, all because Sydney Sweeney saw it a beat early. Straight down the baseline goes the stunt performer! Whatever shift he worked this morning, he clearly left plenty in the tank. Somebody show the rest of the league what the stunt performer just did on that block. Footwork straight out of 1987!
Mia Khalifa freezes in his follow-through, wrist still hanging, and holds it while the Minnesota Ice-Wall coach burns a timeout out of pure desperation. He holds it through the whistle. He holds it into the huddle. The cameras eat every single second of it.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Minnesota Ice-Wall in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Two defenders, one gap, and Sydney Sweeney finds it. Onions on that pass. TRAVEL! Eve took the scenic route to the rim and the whistle ended the tour.
Turnover, layup, Minnesota Ice-Wall straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
That is vision. Inde Navarrette sees the pocket open for a tenth of a second and puts the ball in it. Eve had that one all the way, perfect release, perfect arc, and the rim simply refuses to let it drop.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Minnesota Ice-Wall, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
That is a clean blow-by on Mia Khalifa, and the help defense was nowhere in the same area code. Third reach charged to Mia Khalifa. At some point the officials stop giving you the benefit of the doubt, and that point was two whistles ago.
Sydney Sweeney pushes away the reporter's microphone with a gesture. Eve takes the interview and says 'not tonight'. And here is the answer to our game Concentration on Something Else! Sherleen Doty of Big Chimney, Idaho, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many exits does a corn maze legally require?' The answer was of course one, and even that is a suggestion. Sherleen takes home a giant foam finger that points at the ground! On my end, I ate three chocolate bars during the timeouts. Sports make you hungry, even in the booth. We're packing up. Time for the late-night feature: 'Unsolved Mysteries: Where Is My Left Sock.'
Matchday 9 — vs Houston Blast-Off
78-122 (L)
Won it clean! Madison Beer got up and over him with room to spare.
More second chance points for Houston Blast-Off, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Whistle. Moving screen on Madison Beer, and that one was not even close. Ball goes the other way.
Unsportsmanlike foul on Madison Beer, and this one costs double.
Every single possession of that stretch goes through the actor. Whatever the day job pays, it is not enough for this. A head coach with a full staff and a scouting report just called timeout because of the assistant. Read that sentence back slowly.
Halftime. Inde Navarrette wolfs down an energy bar in two bites. They say Inde Navarrette has a ritual where she touches the basket post three times. If someone watches, starts over. And now, our halftime TV game show Fifty Fifty or Nothing! To win a decorative barometer that has read STORMY since 1998, text HOOPS to 555-0290 and answer this question: 'How many free throws could a horse make in one hour with no thumbs?' The arena lights up, the players are back. Game on.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Houston Blast-Off in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Ice in his veins for a guy who answers to film producer the rest of the week. Professional shot, amateur resume. The block is clean, the ball is gone, and Eve is left staring at his empty hands like a man who lost his keys.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Houston Blast-Off, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
The film producer just made the extra pass with a clean look of his own! You do not run into that kind of selflessness at the office! Watch the feet on Mia Khalifa there, still drifting sideways at the release, and that is exactly why the floater sails wide left of everything.
Houston Blast-Off again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
The film producer just ran that two-man game like he has a decade of film on it. Somebody get this man a contract. Watch the footwork from Inde Navarrette: one-two into the paint, no charge, feathery touch off the glass. Filthy craft.
Watch Inde Navarrette plant his feet, absorb the hit, and spring Sydney Sweeney out of that corner in a blink. The film producer gets it handed over on a silver platter at point blank range and drops it. Somewhere in this building a coach is questioning every decision that led here.
The film producer runs a dribble handoff with the timing of a fifteen-year vet. Not bad for somebody who does this on weekends. The actor just double dribbled in front of a sold-out building. Nobody back at work is ever letting that one go.
Cold blooded from Houston Blast-Off, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Hesitate, GO. Sydney Sweeney is by that hip before the man even blinks. OHHHH, Sydney Sweeney from WAY downtown off the catch! The defense rotated a half second late and paid full price.
Kisses the biceps, one and then the other, and Sydney Sweeney strolls to the free throw line like a man on vacation. Eve fans him with a rolled-up game program. The bench is in tears. Even the guy running the game clock is grinning into his monitor.
Sydney Sweeney kicks her towel across the floor. Madison Beer has already left for the locker room, alone. And here is the answer to our game show Fifty Fifty or Nothing! Merle Bodkin of Dry Fork Holler, West Virginia, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many free throws could a horse make in one hour with no thumbs?' The answer was of course two, and both of them were technically goaltending. Merle therefore wins a decorative barometer that has read STORMY since 1998! During halftime, I tried to interview the mascot. It ignored me. I'll recover eventually. Good night everyone! Up next: 'Worst Cooks in America: Boiling an Egg Without Breaking It.' Challenge accepted.
Matchday 10 — vs Denver Horse-Track
82-126 (L)
Reverse it, make them slide all over again, that is how Sydney Sweeney breaks a shell down. OHHHH the pin-down! Mia Khalifa pops out clean while the defender is STILL tangled up with Sydney Sweeney. Brutal. A cut with that timing from the stunt performer? He is on the clock somewhere else all week and he still found time to learn the two-man game. Get that one framed. Mia Khalifa took off from the block and the defender is still lying on the floor.
Right hand to the mouthguard, out, pointed at the rafters, back in. Mia Khalifa does not break stride once. Two rows of fans are hugging total strangers. Complete loss of composure in the entire lower bowl, and the game is nowhere near over.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Denver Horse-Track with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Follow the ball there: four sets of hands, Mia Khalifa makes the last read, and the defense never gets set. That is training camp offense. The actor hammers a brick off the backboard so hard the rim is still shaking. Nothing in that resume prepared anybody for this.
Turnover, layup, Denver Horse-Track straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
No play on the ball whatsoever. Inde Navarrette took the man down from behind and hoped the crew was feeling generous. They were not. Somebody just dropped a flagrant one on the actor. The man has to be back at work in the morning, have a heart out there.
Finally a breather. Eve has calf cramps, the physio rushes over. Small detail: Eve wears mismatched socks every game. Calls it a strategy. And now, our halftime TV game show Deal or No Deal or Maybe! To win a novelty belt buckle roughly the size of a hubcap, text HOOPS to 555-0396 and answer this question: 'What is the top speed of a shopping cart with one bad wheel?' Both teams emerge from the tunnel. The second half can begin.
More second chance points for Denver Horse-Track, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
The actor is running this zone like he has been drawing it up his entire life. Wrong career, my friend, absolutely the wrong career. Winning basketball right there: Eve knocks the swing pass off course and that offense has to run it back from the top.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Denver Horse-Track, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Sydney Sweeney just did it by hitting Inde Navarrette on the back side with acres of room. Hard drive, hard stop, and Inde Navarrette retreats into an ocean of open hardwood. No touch. Inde Navarrette left the soft hands in the locker room tonight.
Denver Horse-Track again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Eve slides, closes out, recovers. The ball goes all the way around the perimeter and comes back with nothing. Four live-ball turnovers now for Eve, and every single one of them has turned into a bucket.
The ball travels faster than five defenders can, and Inde Navarrette has known that all night long. Read, screen, delivery, right on the money. A film producer making the right pass every single time, and the league is taking notes. A cruel spin-out for the stunt performer, and whatever that day job is, tonight it came with a brand new way to break your heart.
You want basketball IQ? Ask the film producer, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. Screened, toasted, done. Mia Khalifa is loose and the defense is scrambling to find him. AIRBALL! Mia Khalifa missed the rim, the backboard and everything in between!
Watch the spacing, Sydney Sweeney drags two bodies toward the ball and Madison Beer is standing alone behind the line. Geometry, not luck. Getting to his spot and elevating, Madison Beer puts it on the back iron, up over the front, and out. Half a rotation from two points.
Nine seconds to work with, one play call, and it runs through Eve. When the game shrinks like this, you go to your guy. Sixty seconds in the huddle and Mia Khalifa cashes it without a single wasted dribble. Textbook.
Hands out, palms up, Mia Khalifa shrugs at the officials like he cannot explain what he just did either. Dry as a bone. Sydney Sweeney is doubled over at half court and the broadcast crew is howling. It goes viral before the next possession even starts.
Sydney Sweeney mutters 'damn' under her breath. Inde Navarrette says 'yeah' in the same tone. And here is the answer to our game Deal or No Deal or Maybe! Marlene Hufnagel of North Elbow, Wisconsin, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'What is the top speed of a shopping cart with one bad wheel?' The answer was of course whatever speed produces the most noise. Marlene takes home a novelty belt buckle roughly the size of a hubcap! I spent the evening looking for a stat that couldn't be found. It didn't exist. I made one up. See you tomorrow! Up next: 'Extreme Reading: The Terms and Conditions.' 4-hour special.
Matchday 11 — vs New York Over-Timers
89-133 (L)
Madison Beer controls the tip, and the offense gets to run its first set on schedule. Little edges like that stack up over forty-eight minutes.
Total control. Sydney Sweeney has this thing on a string. Here comes the slip from Eve, and Mia Khalifa reads it a half second before anybody else in the building. Rim out for Eve, the crowd came up and sat right back down, and you can hear the groan from every corner of the arena.
Bucket for New York Over-Timers. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
Somebody explain how the film producer reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. This is the work that never shows up on a stat sheet, Madison Beer gets the credit and the guy setting the screen gets the bruise. Nobody drew up that arc. The songwriter floated one halfway to the rafters, and the rim never even got a say.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. New York Over-Timers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Halftime whistle. Mia Khalifa flops into the first available chair. Juicy anecdote: Mia Khalifa was caught dancing the Macarena in the showers. Alone. And now, our halftime TV game show Blockbusters the Video Store One! To win a garden gnome missing both arms, text HOOPS to 555-0712 and answer this question: 'Which is louder, an air horn or a grandmother who disagrees with a call?' Let's go. The arena rumbles, the players answer.
You judge a locker room by moments like this. Eve makes the play, and every man on that sideline erupts right along with him.
More second chance points for New York Over-Timers, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Kick out to Mia Khalifa, one more to Madison Beer, splash from the wing and this bench is on its feet. Baby hook by Madison Beer, right over that outstretched hand, high off the board, count it.
Madison Beer rocks an imaginary baby down the sideline, cradling nothing at all and completely serious about it. Eve plays along, tiptoeing beside him and shushing the front row. Half the arena is doing it too. The other half is filming the half that is doing it.
Dagger from New York Over-Timers. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
The actor just froze a grown professional with a hesitation dribble. This man punches a clock and he is out here doing THAT. In, around, and gone. The iron gives Inde Navarrette nothing.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, New York Over-Timers, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Body to body all the way to the rim and the arm goes up. That is on Madison Beer, and this crew is not letting anything go tonight. The table confirms it, sixth personal on Madison Beer, disqualified, and the boos are pouring down from the visiting section.
Inde Navarrette has to see that help man. When a defender beats you to the spot and sits down, you pull it out.
Over the top of everybody. Mia Khalifa to Eve in the corner, wide open, catch and rise. A assistant breaking down a professional defender in front of a sold out house! Remember that day job, folks! From eight feet Eve puts way too much on it, and the ball clears the rim entirely.
The help defender committed way too early, and Inde Navarrette made him pay for it with a spin they will be replaying all week. ONIONS from Inde Navarrette! He saw the hit coming and went up into it anyway. Both knocked down without the slightest wobble. Free throws are just a shift on the clock, and the actor punched in on time.
Bent double with his hands on his knees, Inde Navarrette takes one breath, straightens up and points at the coach who drew the play in the huddle. The coach nods once, no smile. Madison Beer pounds the man's shoulder anyway. Respect, delivered at maximum volume.
Sydney Sweeney sighs so loudly that the reporters hear it. Inde Navarrette winces. And here is the answer to our game show Blockbusters the Video Store One! Travis Wayne Trundle of Hardtack, Indiana, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Which is louder, an air horn or a grandmother who disagrees with a call?' The answer was of course the grandmother, by a margin researchers declined to publish. Travis Wayne therefore wins a garden gnome missing both arms! Did you know that Inde Navarrette practices film producer on Tuesdays? Builds character, that does. Good evening! Up next: 'Fixer Upper: Renovating a Studio on a Twelve-Dollar Budget.' Challenge accepted.
Matchday 12 — vs Cleveland Twin-Towers
78-122 (L)
SPIN and GO! Sydney Sweeney pirouettes right through the traffic and comes out the other side clean! Soft off the fingertips, the ball takes a full lap of the rim on Sydney Sweeney, and spits straight back out. That is theft.
More second chance points for Cleveland Twin-Towers, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Sydney Sweeney kicks it over to Madison Beer, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. Madison Beer gives it up to Inde Navarrette on the move, the built-in screen erases the chase, and there is a clean runway to the rim. Third look from distance for Inde Navarrette tonight and the arc keeps flattening out, tired legs writing checks the jumper cannot cash.
Two on one the other way and that is a free deuce all day long... except Inde Navarrette says absolutely not. One hand, full court, Inde Navarrette hits Mia Khalifa in stride and the crowd is already up. Somebody check that job title again: the stunt performer hanging in the air like the paint owes him rent, and finishing anyway.
Mia Khalifa steps over the defender who ended up on the floor and keeps walking, never looks down. Cold as a meat locker. The building erupts twice, once for the bucket and once for the disrespect. The replay gets its own dedicated camera angle.
Turnover, layup, Cleveland Twin-Towers straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Rest. Inde Navarrette buries her head in a wet towel and doesn't move. I've been told Inde Navarrette always puts her left shoe on first. The one day she switched, gave up 40 points. And now, our halftime TV game show Triple Dog Dare Hour! To win two pails of driveway sealer that have never once been opened, text HOOPS to 555-0405 and answer this question: 'How many peanuts are dropped on the floor of an average arena per game?' Tipoff! The ball bounces, the arena vibrates, we're back.
Late rotation from Eve, he arrives half a beat behind the drive and the contact is obvious to everybody in the building. Fourth personal on Eve. The arena groans, the bench goes silent, and the other team just spotted daylight.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Cleveland Twin-Towers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
The stunt performer just ran the length of the floor to erase a layup off the backboard. Frame that one for the break room! BAAAANG! Inde Navarrette throws the outlet ahead and Mia Khalifa finishes through contact at the rim!
Mia Khalifa sets an invisible crown on his own head, adjusts it twice, and carries the thing off like it weighs forty pounds. The Cleveland Twin-Towers bench does not find it funny. Eve pounds the crown down with one fist and steers him away before the technical arrives.
Cold blooded from Cleveland Twin-Towers, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Two defenders collide on the handoff and Madison Beer is gone, so Sydney Sweeney earned that one even if the box score disagrees. Textbook footwork, textbook release from Madison Beer, cruel result as it spins out and both teams go up for a contested board.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Cleveland Twin-Towers in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Watch Sydney Sweeney plant his feet, absorb the hit, and spring Inde Navarrette out of that corner in a blink. Inde Navarrette rises, the big man rises higher, and the shot is stuffed into the second row. Return to sender.
SKIP PASS! Inde Navarrette fires it cross court to Eve and the defense is dead in the water! OHHHH the separation! Eve just manufactured three feet of daylight out of absolutely nothing. Buzzer on the shot clock, Eve heaves it off one leg, and the ball comes up short of everything.
Give the man credit for the effort, because Mia Khalifa contested that from three feet behind, which is technically a contest. The actor swatted that one off the glass and handed over two free points. Somebody go over the cylinder rule at the next staff meeting.
Sydney Sweeney walks it up, two fingers in the air, and the whole offense shifts on his command. Oldest play in the book, and Mia Khalifa runs it in his sleep. That drop coverage never had a prayer. Sydney Sweeney threads a BEAUTY to Madison Beer under the rim and... he lays it off the bottom of the iron! Ohhhh, no.
Eve's eyes are glassy. Madison Beer mumbles 'we'll get them next time' without believing it. And here is the answer to our game show Triple Dog Dare Hour! Maureen Skaggs of North Fork Elbow, Idaho, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many peanuts are dropped on the floor of an average arena per game?' The answer was of course four thousand and nine, not counting the ones nobody will admit to. Maureen therefore wins two pails of driveway sealer that have never once been opened! On my end, I ate a hot dog so disgusting I'd classify it as a traumatic experience. That's it. Up next: 'Anthony Bourdain Visits: The Park-and-Ride in Poughkeepsie.' Culture shock.
Matchday 13 — vs Boston Ring-Chasers
78-123 (L)
Turnover, layup, Boston Ring-Chasers straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
You want basketball IQ? Ask the actor, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. The film producer runs a dribble handoff with the timing of a fifteen-year vet. Not bad for somebody who does this on weekends. Off the back iron for Eve, that one had all the distance and none of the accuracy, and the board goes the other way.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Boston Ring-Chasers in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
The songwriter just took a charge from a man twice his size and got up smiling. Absolute lunatic behavior, and we love it!
The actor just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. The assistant pulls out the crossover of his life, and Monday morning he clocks in like nothing ever happened. The assistant had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
Cut! Halftime. Sydney Sweeney's jersey is completely drenched in sweat. Fun fact: Sydney Sweeney blocked a shot in the finals... And dislocated a thumb celebrating. Classic. And now, our halftime TV game show Match Game Winding Down! To win a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it, text HOOPS to 555-0509 and answer this question: 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' Play resumes! The coach set a few things straight in the locker room.
Cold blooded from Boston Ring-Chasers, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Somebody explain the arc to the songwriter. He gave away three shots on a prayer, and you can watch the coach age in real time. The songwriter sits down with four. You want to be furious, but honestly, he came here straight off a full shift.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Boston Ring-Chasers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Somebody get the songwriter a rim protection bonus! Clocks out at five, guarding the paint by seven. This league is a wonderful place.
That is the pass nobody puts on a highlight reel, and Inde Navarrette makes it every single trip down the floor. Sydney Sweeney eats the contact so Mia Khalifa can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. Mia Khalifa rises up from fifteen feet and OHHHH, that rattled in and OUT!
POCKET PASS! Mia Khalifa threads it to Eve between two bodies and the rim is wide open! Eve gets to his spot in the lane, lifts the runner over the big man, and leaves it a foot short. No dice.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Boston Ring-Chasers, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Nobody is getting a hand near that. Inde Navarrette has all the room in the world. OHHHH! Inde Navarrette went up looking for a poster and came back down as the punchline.
Inde Navarrette attacks the baseline and the ENTIRE defense has to rotate behind him! Catch, rise, splash. The actor owns the cleanest jumper on this floor and still has a shift to work in the morning.
Whole huddle leaning in to hear it, and the plan is to hand the game to the film producer. Genius or madness, we are about to find out. Look at the spacing here, two shooters lifting to drag the help, and that leaves Madison Beer an easy read to Mia Khalifa in the pocket. Chess.
Mia Khalifa hangs on the rim one extra beat, letting the whole arena wait on him, then drops down into a dead-eyed mean mug. Sydney Sweeney shoves him in the chest just to get a reaction. Nothing. Stone face on a man who just changed the game.
Madison Beer sighs so loudly that the reporters hear it. Mia Khalifa winces. And here is the answer to our game show Match Game Winding Down! Georgette Blalock of Little Persimmon, North Carolina, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' The answer was of course the regret, by about eleven minutes. Georgette therefore wins a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it! I discovered tonight that my mic was off for three minutes. Three minutes of pure genius, lost forever. This was your favorite commentator. Coming up: 'Extreme Makeover: Garage Edition.' Don't change the channel. Or do.
Matchday 14 — vs San Antonio Skyscrapers
73-118 (L)
Ohhh no. Corner three, San Antonio Skyscrapers in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Set called, Mia Khalifa waved out to the corner, and Sydney Sweeney watches the spacing open up like a front door. Full stop, full sprint, and the stunt performer is in the paint! Nobody back at the workplace is going to believe this one. It went halfway down! The ball sat in the cylinder, thought about it, and rolled off the far side on Mia Khalifa. Cruel.
Bucket for San Antonio Skyscrapers. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
OHHHH the bench is GONE! Towels over heads, bodies off the chairs, all because of Eve! The songwriter just blocked a jump shot into the stands and went back on defense like it was a normal Tuesday.
Sydney Sweeney comes off the screen and the big man drops WAY back. Madison Beer just fades to the arc for the cleanest look of the night. Soft off the fingertips, the ball takes a full lap of the rim on Madison Beer, and spits straight back out. That is theft.
End of the second quarter. Madison Beer is breathing so loud you can hear it from here. Anecdote: Madison Beer fell asleep on the bench during an exhibition game. Still got named MVP. And now, our halftime TV game show The Chase But Everyone Is Walking! To win a milk crate full of cassette tapes with no labels, text HOOPS to 555-0853 and answer this question: 'What is the record for most consecutive high fives that missed?' Both teams retake the floor. The best may be yet to come.
Cold blooded from San Antonio Skyscrapers, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Towels are FLYING for the actor! Going back to the day job on Monday is going to feel extremely strange after a night like this.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, San Antonio Skyscrapers, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
The film producer just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. Madison Beer stutters at the elbow, the defender bites on it, and now there is nothing but open floor between him and the rim. Gift wrapped by Mia Khalifa, and Madison Beer cannot finish the two footer. That one is going to sting.
More second chance points for San Antonio Skyscrapers, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
You can teach the jumper, you cannot teach the willingness, and Mia Khalifa gives up a decent shot every single time a better one exists. A four point play from the songwriter! He does not do this for a living and he just took over the biggest possession of the night.
The too-small gesture, aimed straight at the San Antonio Skyscrapers bench, both hands measuring an inch of air. Their coach is out of his chair and onto the officials. Madison Beer keeps the pose, unblinking, backpedaling all the way. The arena hits a decibel level that clips the broadcast mics.
That is the pass nobody puts on a highlight reel, and Inde Navarrette makes it every single trip down the floor. Textbook two-man game: Sydney Sweeney keeps the dribble alive, forces the big man to commit, and Inde Navarrette rolls into an open runway. Inde Navarrette fires that thing at the backboard like it owes him money. No chance from the moment it left his hand.
Inde Navarrette splits the coverage with a bounce pass you need slow motion to appreciate. Dimes. Put him on skates, then put him on a POSTER. Sydney Sweeney owns the highlight reel tonight.
OHHHH the help side! Eve comes flying out of nowhere and that drive is DEAD on arrival! This is the work that never shows up in a box score, and Eve just took two points off the board without a single stat.
Laser from Sydney Sweeney, corner to corner, and that closeout gets there about a second and a half too late. The songwriter reads the screen perfectly, comes off shoulder to shoulder, and buys himself an open look. Veteran movement, rookie resume. Catching it right at the cup with nobody within eight feet, Madison Beer goes up too strong and the ball rides high off the backboard.
Madison Beer pulls her cap down over her eyes. Mia Khalifa doesn't have a cap, and it shows. And here is the answer to our game show The Chase But Everyone Is Walking! Otis Wagstaff of Empty Barrel, Nevada, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the record for most consecutive high fives that missed?' The answer was of course forty one, set at a rec league in 1998 and never approached since. Otis therefore wins a milk crate full of cassette tapes with no labels! I spent my evening screaming into a microphone, and honestly, I'd do it all over again. That's a wrap! Coming up: 'What Would You Do: People Who Say Hello in the Elevator.' Exposing the truth.
Matchday 15 — vs Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest
73-118 (L)
The actor misses absolutely everything, and honestly, the nerve to even attempt that shot deserves something. Not points. But something. You want to know why this team keeps winning the possession battle? Eve treats every miss like it belongs to him. Follow the ball there: four sets of hands, Eve makes the last read, and the defense never gets set. That is training camp offense. The ball skips around the perimeter, Inde Navarrette finds the open man on the weak side, and Madison Beer buries it.
Madison Beer rocks an imaginary baby down the sideline, cradling nothing at all and completely serious about it. Mia Khalifa plays along, tiptoeing beside him and shushing the front row. Half the arena is doing it too. The other half is filming the half that is doing it.
Across half court, a quick survey, a point to the weak side, and Sydney Sweeney drops it off to Eve on time and on target. Down screen, and Eve curls hard into the middle of the floor with a full step of daylight. Easy read. The assistant had two points in the bank and the iron took them right back out. You do not get heartbreak like that in the day job.
That is a dime from Mia Khalifa that deserved so much better, and Sydney Sweeney knows it, head down, jogging back before the ball even lands. The shot is short, and Eve is the only man moving. He rips it out of the crowd and the possession lives. Second pass beats the rotation, Eve to Inde Navarrette, and the closeout gets there about half a second too late. Inde Navarrette takes two dribbles past halfcourt, rises from thirty five feet, and the net barely moves. Filthy.
Nothing but a nod. Inde Navarrette jogs back on defense with his eyes half closed, like the shot was a formality he had penciled in. The entire arena is levitating and he could not look less involved. The Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest bench looks personally insulted.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Over the top of everybody. Sydney Sweeney to Madison Beer in the corner, wide open, catch and rise. A songwriter breaking down a professional defender in front of a sold out house! Remember that day job, folks! The songwriter had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
Halftime. Mia Khalifa wolfs down an energy bar in two bites. Fun fact: Mia Khalifa blocked a shot in the finals... And dislocated a thumb celebrating. Classic. And now, our halftime TV game show Sale of the Half Century! To win a bread machine with a manual in three languages, none of them English, text HOOPS to 555-0673 and answer this question: 'What is the wingspan of a man who claims he could have gone pro?' Here they come. You can read the determination on their faces.
The film producer just created his own space with a stepback. Somewhere a scout is spitting coffee all over his notepad. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the film producer! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
More second chance points for Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
You want basketball IQ? Ask the film producer, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. BAAAANG! Madison Beer sets the table and the pick-and-pop three goes down like somebody scripted it. Two on the shot clock and the ball ends up with the assistant, which is how you get a twenty-eight footer off the wrong foot.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Mia Khalifa splits the coverage with a bounce pass you need slow motion to appreciate. Dimes. That is the shot Madison Beer wants every trip down the floor, it drops nine nights out of ten, and tonight is the tenth.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
SKIP PASS! Inde Navarrette fires it cross court to Sydney Sweeney and the defense is dead in the water! The beauty of it is that Sydney Sweeney never has to set a screen at all, the exchange IS the screen. Nightmare to guard. Down, up, and gone for Madison Beer. The rim is just toying with him now.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The film producer gets whistled for the swipe. Forty honest hours a week and here he is, picking pockets in front of twenty thousand witnesses. Careful now. Three fouls this early means Sydney Sweeney plays the next stretch with his hands straight up in the air.
Whistles. Monitor. And Sydney Sweeney standing frozen at midcourt. The film producer is finding out what this league does to people. It hands you the moment, then it rolls the tape.
Sydney Sweeney bites her lip, fists clenched. Inde Navarrette shakes her head slowly, in disbelief. And here is the answer to our game show Sale of the Half Century! Orville Duckworth of Slush Pile, Michigan, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the wingspan of a man who claims he could have gone pro?' The answer was of course roughly the length of the story he is telling. Orville therefore wins a bread machine with a manual in three languages, none of them English! Tonight my colleague told me I smell like stress. I told him it was my cologne. Thanks for watching. Coming up: '48 Hours: The Secret Life of Roundabouts.' Essential viewing.
My Team finishes #16 (0W-15L). Better luck next season! MVP: Sydney Sweeney.
