Pre-season
Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to what is probably going to be the most electric night of this season. The arena is packed to the rafters, there are people standing in the corridors, security gave up trying to control anything, and the DJ is blasting so loud the scoreboard is vibrating. We are here to talk about a legendary franchise. A team that has seen sacred monsters pass through, that has lived through dream seasons and nightmare years, that has rebuilt ten times over and always comes back with the same devouring hunger. The team with no name, baby! Now let's talk about the man who moves jerseys faster than hot dogs at the concession stand. Yao Ming. Just the name sends chills through the building. Standing at 229 cm, arms that cover half the court, and a basketball IQ so fast that defenders feel like they're playing in slow motion. This man doesn't walk, he glides. He doesn't jump, he launches into orbit. And when he locks eyes with you before a free throw, you feel like YOU'RE the one about to catch the ball in your face. The worst part? His ice-cold composure. The clock shows 0.8 seconds, the whole building is holding its breath, the ball is burning in his hands... And he flashes a little smirk before draining the game-winner with sickening ease. He's the engine, the brain, and the heartbeat of that locker room. If he sneezes, the whole damn franchise catches a cold. Tonight, he's on a mission, and believe me, he didn't show up to mess around. Attention, things are about to get serious. Actually no, things are about to go completely off the rails. The front office signed Charlie Kirk. The man is a conspiracy theorist. Yes, you heard that right. A conspiracy theorist. On a basketball court. With bare hands in his gym bag and zero understanding of what a pick-and-roll is. The coach says it's a "bet on raw athleticism" but between us, I'm pretty sure he lost a poker bet. Charlie Kirk had his first practice yesterday and asked if the free throw line was home plate. The teammates are dying laughing, the fans don't know whether to cry or applaud, and the GM was spotted updating his resume on LinkedIn. Budget: unlimited. Well technically there's a limit, but the owner decided to ignore it. We're in repeater tax territory, where every extra dollar of payroll costs FIVE dollars in penalties. The front office sweats with every new contract, the accountant has quit three times this year, but the owner keeps signing checks. The result? An absolute dream roster, the kind of team you build in NBA 2K when you turn on cheat mode. The downside? Zero flexibility. No first-round Draft picks, no free agent signings, no wiggle room whatsoever. It's all or nothing. And tonight, it's gonna be all.
Matchday 1 — vs Detroit Engine-Roar
81-126 (L)
Bucket for Detroit Engine-Roar. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
From WAY downtown off the pop! Charlie Kirk with the extra pass and CASH. Rim out for Allen Iverson, the crowd came up and sat right back down, and you can hear the groan from every corner of the arena.
Turnover, layup, Detroit Engine-Roar straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Over the top of everybody. Charlie Kirk to Yaxel Lendeborg in the corner, wide open, catch and rise. That is a self-created look of the highest order, and there might be five guys in this league who get to it on demand the way Yaxel Lendeborg does. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was IN for Yaxel Lendeborg!
Ohhh no. Corner three, Detroit Engine-Roar in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Halftime whistle! Yaxel Lendeborg slides down against the hallway wall. Exclusive info: Yaxel Lendeborg is banned for life from the McDonald's near the arena. The details remain murky. And now, our halftime TV game show Big Brother-in-Law! To win a novelty license plate that spells HOTDOG incorrectly, text HOOPS to 555-0296 and answer this question: 'How many pockets can cargo shorts have before they legally become furniture?' Here they come. You can read the determination on their faces.
OHHHH that is ROUGH. Allen Iverson gets turned twice and hands it over without ever crossing the line.
Allen Iverson goes down like he was shot. No whistle. The crowd lets him hear every bit of it.
Dagger from Detroit Engine-Roar. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Look at the shoulders on the conspiracy theorist. Everybody has a rough shift at work, but most people do not have twenty thousand witnesses. Buzzer on the shot clock, Allen Iverson heaves it off one leg, and the ball comes up short of everything.
A full spin move through traffic from the conspiracy theorist! Whatever they teach in that trade, footwork is apparently part of it. That is another catch and shoot triple for Charlie Kirk, and you can see the closeouts getting more desperate every single trip.
Salute: sharp, military, held. Charlie Kirk delivers it toward the loudest corner of the building and does not drop his hand until the noise starts to hurt. Yao Ming snaps to attention beside him and the bench follows. Twelve saluting maniacs and a coach with his head in his hands.
Somebody explain how the conspiracy theorist reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. Pass, cut, catch, wide open. Four things in about a second and a half from Allen Iverson. A timeout is coming, because no defense recovers from watching Allen Iverson do that to one of their own.
Allen Iverson deadpans directly into the broadcast camera: nod, wink, gone. Total elapsed time, one and a half seconds. The commentators lose it completely. Yaxel Lendeborg arrives too late and mugs at an empty lens for nobody at all.
More second chance points for Detroit Engine-Roar, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Total control. Charlie Kirk has this thing on a string. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Yao Ming spun out of a double team like it was a revolving door! Rises, releases, and Yao Ming sends the ball through the exact patch of sky where the rim is not.
Right through the window. Yaxel Lendeborg to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the roll, and the help was a half step late. OHHHH! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar went up looking for a poster and came back down as the punchline.
Two guys on the exact same page, Yaxel Lendeborg and Allen Iverson, and the defense is left holding a bag of nothing. Prayer from Yaxel Lendeborg. Not answered.
Charlie Kirk walks toward the tunnel without a word. Allen Iverson stares at the scoreboard as if it might change. And here is the answer to our game Big Brother-in-Law! Peggy Ann Hollifield of Sassafras Gap, South Carolina, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many pockets can cargo shorts have before they legally become furniture?' The answer was of course eleven, and at twelve you have to register them with the county. Peggy Ann takes home a novelty license plate that spells HOTDOG incorrectly! I learned that Charlie Kirk's father was a conspiracy theorist. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. That's a wrap! Coming up: 'American Idol: Accountant Edition.' Singing, dancing, and spreadsheets.
Matchday 2 — vs Miami Heart-Attack
99-111 (L)
That is the pass nobody puts on a highlight reel, and Yaxel Lendeborg makes it every single trip down the floor. Oldest play in the book, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar runs it in his sleep. That drop coverage never had a prayer. BRICK! Allen Iverson throws up a prayer and the iron sends it straight back out to half court!
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Miami Heart-Attack with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Violation on Allen Iverson. Ball goes the other way.
Miami Heart-Attack again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
CHARGE! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plants the feet and takes that freight train straight to the chest!
Halftime! Yaxel Lendeborg checks his stats on the board and winces. Did you know Yaxel Lendeborg knits to unwind? Made a scarf in Miami Heart-Attack's colors. By accident, obviously. And now, our halftime TV game show Countdown to Nothing in Particular! To win a jigsaw puzzle with all four corner pieces missing, text HOOPS to 555-1207 and answer this question: 'How many hot dogs does a mascot eat before he stops enjoying it?' Break's over, time for basketball. Let's go.
Cold blooded from Miami Heart-Attack, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Down screen, and Yaxel Lendeborg curls hard into the middle of the floor with a full step of daylight. Easy read. That is the shot Yaxel Lendeborg wants every trip down the floor, it drops nine nights out of ten, and tonight is the tenth.
You do not put the other team in the bonus this early. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has to be smarter than contact that never had a chance at the ball. The best defender on this floor is headed to the bench with four. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar goes off with his hand still up, insisting he was straight up and down.
Yaxel Lendeborg splits the coverage with a bounce pass you need slow motion to appreciate. Dimes. In, around, and gone. The iron gives Kareem Abdul-Jabbar nothing.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Miami Heart-Attack, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Push the pace! Charlie Kirk grabs it and hits Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in stride before the defense can even match up. Bodies everywhere in the paint and it does not matter one bit to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one spin and the ball never leaves the string. OHHHH what a FINISH from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar! Hanging, hanging, and laying it high off the glass on the way down!
Blowing smoke off two fingers like a gunslinger, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holsters them in his waistband. Yao Ming plays dead on the baseline. The mascot joins the bit uninvited. A referee has to physically separate a celebration from an inbound play.
No hero ball here: Allen Iverson takes what the defense gives and moves it along. Baseline wide open. Yaxel Lendeborg said thank you. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Yaxel Lendeborg builds the whole thing from nothing. No screen, no help, three points.
Salute: sharp, military, held. Yaxel Lendeborg delivers it toward the loudest corner of the building and does not drop his hand until the noise starts to hurt. Charlie Kirk snaps to attention beside him and the bench follows. Twelve saluting maniacs and a coach with his head in his hands.
The opposing coach is off his seat waving both arms before the ball is even inbounded. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar forced that.
The crew chief has the headset on, three angles on the screen, everybody in here staring at Yaxel Lendeborg. Waved off. Yaxel Lendeborg got the entire celebration in before the officials even reached the monitor.
Allen Iverson closes his eyes walking out. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar keeps his wide open, fixed, empty. And here is the answer to our game show Countdown to Nothing in Particular! Norma Jean Sprinkle of Butterbean Flats, Alaska, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many hot dogs does a mascot eat before he stops enjoying it?' The answer was of course nine, and the tenth one is purely professional. Norma Jean therefore wins a jigsaw puzzle with all four corner pieces missing! I tried to take a selfie with the court in the background. My thumb is over the lens. Thanks everyone! Up next: 'Ice Road Truckers: Uber Eats Delivery on a Rainy Night.'
Matchday 3 — vs Orlando Magic-Beans
116-105 (W)
This is the work that never shows up on a stat sheet, Allen Iverson gets the credit and the guy setting the screen gets the bruise. Perfect drop-off from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Allen Iverson answers with... whatever that was. Off the glass, off the rim, and gone.
BAAAANG! Charlie Kirk sets the table and the pick-and-pop three goes down like somebody scripted it. Deep. Deeper. GONE. Yaxel Lendeborg drops it in from a spot the scouting report never even listed.
Backing all the way to half court with three fingers held over each eye, Yaxel Lendeborg keeps the goggles on for the entire trip. The bench mob copies it in unison. The broadcast cuts to twelve grown men wearing invisible glasses. Peak television, honestly.
Oh, Yao Ming wanted to be heard. Congratulations, he was heard. Free throw the other way. Composure is a skill, and Yao Ming just flunked the test at the worst imaginable moment for his team.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Orlando Magic-Beans with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
Second charge drawn by Yao Ming tonight, and that big fella is going to think twice before lowering a shoulder again.
Halftime! Charlie Kirk checks his stats on the board and winces. Locker room anecdote: Charlie Kirk talks to a sock called 'Assistant Coach.' We don't judge. And now, our halftime TV game show Storage Wars of the Half-Empty Unit! To win a bag of nine hundred rubber bands from a post office, text HOOPS to 555-0278 and answer this question: 'How many folding tables does a county fair actually own?' Back on the court. The coach changed the starting five, that'll be a surprise.
The ball travels faster than five defenders can, and Charlie Kirk has known that all night long. The beauty of it is that Yao Ming never has to set a screen at all, the exchange IS the screen. Nightmare to guard. Two defenders, one gap, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar finds it. Onions on that pass. Allen Iverson gets into the paint, sees the shot blocker rising, and simply lifts it over the top of him. Never had a prayer.
Straight to the logo at center court, Allen Iverson plants both feet and flexes until the veins show. The bench is a pile of bodies and airborne headbands. An assistant coach has to be physically restrained by a trainer who is also celebrating.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Orlando Magic-Beans in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Swing, swing, and Yaxel Lendeborg finds Charlie Kirk on the wing before the help can even turn its head. The conspiracy theorist just threaded a pocket pass through two defenders. Where exactly did that vision come from? They do not teach that footwork anymore, and yet here is Yaxel Lendeborg running a full masterclass on the low block.
Down by the baseline, Yaxel Lendeborg points at the arena DJ, who obliges with the loudest thing in the catalog. The whole lower bowl is up. Yao Ming is dancing badly and fully aware of it. The Orlando Magic-Beans coach signals for time and gets ignored by his own players.
SKIP PASS! Yaxel Lendeborg fires it cross court to Allen Iverson and the defense is dead in the water! POCKET PASS! Allen Iverson threads it to Charlie Kirk between two bodies and the rim is wide open! OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the conspiracy theorist! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Across half court, a quick survey, a point to the weak side, and Charlie Kirk drops it off to Allen Iverson on time and on target. That is vision. Allen Iverson sees the pocket open for a tenth of a second and puts the ball in it. A jump hook over a grown professional defender, from the conspiracy theorist? That is the most unexpected fundamentals clinic of the night.
Watch the spacing there, Allen Iverson hits Yaxel Lendeborg right in the shooting pocket and the possession stays alive. Charlie Kirk sets it and slides out instead of rolling, Yaxel Lendeborg finds him late, and the defense pays for cheating under the screen. Stuck holding it as the clock bleeds out, Charlie Kirk fades away from twenty-six feet, and it is not close.
Under review. Allen Iverson does not know yet whether he is the hero or the footnote. The building went up, the building came right back down, and Allen Iverson is staring at a scoreboard that never moved.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Yaxel Lendeborg do celebratory push-ups. Allen Iverson counts out loud. Definitely cheating. And here is the answer to our game Storage Wars of the Half-Empty Unit! Verna Lou Cottongim of Flat Tire, Arizona, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many folding tables does a county fair actually own?' The answer was of course nobody knows, because they multiply in the off-season. Verna Lou takes home a bag of nine hundred rubber bands from a post office! Confession: I bet against my favorite team tonight. Superstition. It works half the time. We're wrapping up the mics. Up next: 'Chopped: Tupperware Lunch at the Office Edition.'
Matchday 4 — vs Philadelphia Injury-Report
107-86 (W)
That is a costly ten seconds for Yao Ming. He lost the call, he lost his temper, and the other team gets a point without leaving the huddle. Yao Ming would not let it go. He already had one, he knew the rule, and he kept talking anyway.
The extra pass! Yaxel Lendeborg had the look, gave it up anyway, and Allen Iverson buries it. BANG! Catch on the block, shoulder into the chest, one dribble, and Allen Iverson finishes over the top. Textbook.
Off comes the headband, launched into the crowd like a rock star, and the fight for it delays the inbound. Allen Iverson watches two adults wrestle in row four. Half the arena is filming that instead of the game. Everybody in here has lost the plot.
OHHHH the pin-down! Yaxel Lendeborg pops out clean while the defender is STILL tangled up with Yao Ming. Brutal. From eight feet Yaxel Lendeborg puts way too much on it, and the ball clears the rim entirely.
Philadelphia Injury-Report again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Allen Iverson hands it off to Charlie Kirk, slices through the seam, and the return pass is sitting there waiting at the rim. Rising up out of the corner, Allen Iverson sends it LONG, clanging off the far side and out to the wing.
Break. The coach is yelling in the tunnel, Yaxel Lendeborg picks up the pace. Locker room anecdote: Yaxel Lendeborg talks to a sock called 'Assistant Coach.' We don't judge. And now, our halftime TV game show Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! To win a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong, text HOOPS to 555-0066 and answer this question: 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' The hardwood awaits. Here we go for the second half.
The big rolls, the defense collapses, and Allen Iverson punishes it with a read most guys never even see. Down, up, and gone for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The rim is just toying with him now.
OHHHH THE CHASEDOWN! Allen Iverson comes from nowhere and pins it on the glass! Wide open runway! Allen Iverson gets to the rim before the defense even crosses halfcourt!
PICKED HIS POCKET! Allen Iverson jumps the passing lane and he is GONE the other way! Rebound, look, gone. Allen Iverson to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and this is a footrace now. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rose up over the help and hammered it down on somebody's head!
You want basketball IQ? Ask the conspiracy theorist, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. Screened, toasted, done. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is loose and the defense is scrambling to find him. Getting to his spot and elevating, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar puts it on the back iron, up over the front, and out. Half a rotation from two points.
Cold blooded from Philadelphia Injury-Report, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Allen Iverson launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. Dribble handoff from Yaxel Lendeborg, and the defender gets wiped out on the exchange! Allen Iverson rises up from fifteen feet and OHHHH, that rattled in and OUT!
First option: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Everything else on that clipboard is decoration. Sixty seconds in the huddle and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar cashes it without a single wasted dribble. Textbook.
Yaxel Lendeborg and Allen Iverson attempt an elaborate handshake. They miss three times. Charlie Kirk films the whole thing. And here is the answer to our game Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! Wanda Sue Beezley of Rooster Comb, South Dakota, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' The answer was of course forty-one, and three of them open nothing at all. Wanda Sue takes home a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong! I got a text from Yaxel Lendeborg after the game. Just kidding. Nobody texts me. That's it for tonight. Coming up: 'True Confessions: I Put Ketchup on Pasta.'
Matchday 5 — vs Phoenix No-Defense
97-111 (L)
Laser from Allen Iverson, corner to corner, and that closeout gets there about a second and a half too late. Here comes Allen Iverson sprinting off the elbow. Yao Ming slides it into his pocket and that chase defender is buried. So close. Allen Iverson can only stare at the iron.
Clean feed from Yaxel Lendeborg, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. Handoff, turn the corner, BUCKET! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did all the dirty work on that one. Nobody dribbled, nobody isolated, Charlie Kirk and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar just played basketball and the defense got shredded. The conspiracy theorist just fired one in from the logo and the roof nearly came off this place. That is in nobody's job description.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Phoenix No-Defense in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Here is what makes a defense elite: Yao Ming does not just block shots, he deletes the whole idea of driving on this team. That outlet from Yao Ming is a weapon, it turns a defensive stop into two points in about three seconds. OHHHH the speed of Allen Iverson! Nobody in this building was catching him.
Five straight misses now for Yao Ming, and every voice in that huddle has gone quiet. Twenty-four seconds, zero shots. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds it, the buzzer sounds, and we give it back without ever testing the rim.
Halftime. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is holding his ribs walking toward the tunnel. I've been told Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once ordered a pizza during a timeout. The coach was not amused. And now, our halftime TV game show Card Sharks and Minnows! To win a case of off-brand soda called Mister Fizz, text HOOPS to 555-0209 and answer this question: 'How deep is the deep end of a kiddie pool?' Back to hostilities. Faces have changed in the locker room.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Allen Iverson threw it before the help even committed. You can teach the jumper, you cannot teach the willingness, and Yao Ming gives up a decent shot every single time a better one exists. Up goes the shot from Charlie Kirk and that is nothing but AIR, and every soul in this building saw it happen.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Phoenix No-Defense with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
No roll this time. Charlie Kirk swings it right back to Allen Iverson above the break, and it is PURE. Allen Iverson went for the deep heat check and produced the loudest silence of the night, roar to OHHHH in half a second.
Dribble alive, patient, patient, and then Allen Iverson slips it to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar right in the pocket. Surgical. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rises, the big man rises higher, and the shot is stuffed into the second row. Return to sender.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Phoenix No-Defense, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Hand check on Yaxel Lendeborg. That is a foul in this league every single time. Nothing but trouble ahead for Yaxel Lendeborg. Third foul, and this crew is calling it tight on both ends of the floor.
Turnover, layup, Phoenix No-Defense straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Yao Ming slides the hip out a full foot before contact. The official saw it, the arena saw it, everybody saw it.
Yaxel Lendeborg kicks it over to Allen Iverson, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. Allen Iverson gives it up to Yao Ming on the move, the built-in screen erases the chase, and there is a clean runway to the rim. BANG is what Yao Ming was hearing in his head. Clang is what this building actually got.
Allen Iverson stares at the floor while Yaxel Lendeborg mutters something inaudible under his breath. And here is the answer to our game Card Sharks and Minnows! Norma Jean Slaughterbeck of Grease Rack, Indiana, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How deep is the deep end of a kiddie pool?' The answer was of course approximately one confident toddler. Norma Jean takes home a case of off-brand soda called Mister Fizz! I got a text from Allen Iverson after the game. Just kidding. Nobody texts me. That's it. Up next: 'Anthony Bourdain Visits: The Park-and-Ride in Poughkeepsie.' Culture shock.
Matchday 6 — vs Los Angeles Nursing-Home
94-103 (L)
The conspiracy theorist is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. Yao Ming comes flying off that screen and he is WIDE open! Watch the feet on Yao Ming there, still drifting sideways at the release, and that is exactly why the floater sails wide left of everything.
Watch Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plant his feet, absorb the hit, and spring Allen Iverson out of that corner in a blink. That is the shot chart lying to you. Allen Iverson did everything right on this possession and has zero points to show for it.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Los Angeles Nursing-Home, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Charlie Kirk walks it up, two fingers in the air, and the whole offense shifts on his command. Charlie Kirk just took a shoulder to the chest to buy Yao Ming half a second, and half a second in this league is an eternity. AIRBALL! Yao Ming missed the rim, the backboard and everything in between!
More second chance points for Los Angeles Nursing-Home, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Halftime whistle! Allen Iverson slides down against the hallway wall. Anecdote: Allen Iverson threw up before his first pro game. No more pre-game burgers ever since. And now, our halftime TV game show Match Game Winding Down! To win a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it, text HOOPS to 555-0509 and answer this question: 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' Resumption imminent. The players wrap up their express warm-up.
Four live-ball turnovers now for Allen Iverson, and every single one of them has turned into a bucket. OUTLET! Allen Iverson rips the board and fires it ahead to Yao Ming before anybody gets back! There is no finesse in that, and there does not need to be. Yao Ming simply decided the paint belonged to him.
Yao Ming throws both arms up and holds them there, letting the arena pull the sound out of him. Twenty thousand people on their feet at once. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar grabs his shoulders from behind and shakes him like a snow globe. The floor is genuinely vibrating.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar eats the contact so Allen Iverson can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. The help defender had position, leverage, everything but a chance. Allen Iverson rose straight over the top of him, and one.
Ball moves. Charlie Kirk to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on time and on target. OHHHH, what a read by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar! He never even glanced at the rim and it is CASH on the other end. Pull-up from the elbow by Yao Ming, halfway down, spinning inside the iron, and it pops right back out.
Turnover, layup, Los Angeles Nursing-Home straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Charlie Kirk turns the corner off the screen from Allen Iverson, the help never rotates, and the lane is WIDE open! Soft off the fingertips, the ball takes a full lap of the rim on Allen Iverson, and spits straight back out. That is theft.
Los Angeles Nursing-Home again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
This is the part of the league nobody loves and everybody watches: Allen Iverson waits with both hands on top of his head. Off the defender! Ball back to Allen Iverson!
They have to shoot over the top of this thing, and the top of it is a long way up. Filthy work from Yao Ming. The entry pass goes in, Yaxel Lendeborg beats the big man to it, and this building is already standing up.
Here is the part that never makes the highlight package: Charlie Kirk controlling tempo, burning clock, hunting the mismatch the second one shows up. Here comes the slip from Allen Iverson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar reads it a half second before anybody else in the building. Allen Iverson had that one all the way, perfect release, perfect arc, and the rim simply refuses to let it drop.
Yaxel Lendeborg's gaze is cold, distant. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's gaze is hot, angry. And here is the answer to our game show Match Game Winding Down! Georgette Blalock of Little Persimmon, North Carolina, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' The answer was of course the regret, by about eleven minutes. Georgette therefore wins a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it! I spent the fourth quarter standing. Not by choice. My chair gave out in the third. Thanks for watching. Coming up: '48 Hours: The Secret Life of Roundabouts.' Essential viewing.
Matchday 7 — vs Toronto Border-Patrol
103-117 (L)
Beautiful footwork on that one from Charlie Kirk, the pivot foot never budges, which is precisely why the whistle stays in the pocket. Two on the shot clock and the ball ends up with the conspiracy theorist, which is how you get a twenty-eight footer off the wrong foot.
Dagger from Toronto Border-Patrol. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Allen Iverson crosses, crosses back, the defender slides half a step the wrong way and the whole arena lets out the same OHHHH. Ambition, ten out of ten. Footwork, two out of ten. Allen Iverson beat himself before the defender ever showed up.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Charlie Kirk just did it by hitting Yaxel Lendeborg on the back side with acres of room. OHHHH the pin-down! Yaxel Lendeborg pops out clean while the defender is STILL tangled up with Charlie Kirk. Brutal. Textbook footwork, textbook release from Yaxel Lendeborg, cruel result as it spins out and both teams go up for a contested board.
Set called, Yaxel Lendeborg waved out to the corner, and Charlie Kirk watches the spacing open up like a front door. Yao Ming eats the contact so Yaxel Lendeborg can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. Pull-up from the elbow by Yaxel Lendeborg, halfway down, spinning inside the iron, and it pops right back out.
The players disappear into the tunnel. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar asks for an ice pack. Did you know Kareem Abdul-Jabbar started basketball because he was terrible at soccer? Sometimes failure leads to greatness. And now, our halftime TV game show Whammy Watch Live! To win a barrel of packing peanuts and absolutely nothing else, text HOOPS to 555-1073 and answer this question: 'How tall is the shortest player who ever dunked in a dream?' Jump ball to restart. Let the second half begin!
Reverse it, make them slide all over again, that is how Allen Iverson breaks a shell down. OHHHH the hesi! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar froze him solid and he is already gone! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rises up from fifteen feet and OHHHH, that rattled in and OUT!
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gets it on the reversal and now this defense is rotating, scrambling and losing ground, all because Charlie Kirk saw it a beat early. Oldest play in the book and it still works: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar passes, the defender peeks at the ball, and that one beat is the whole possession. No touch. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar left the soft hands in the locker room tonight.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Toronto Border-Patrol with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Allen Iverson threw it before the help even committed. A probe, a plant of the outside foot, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pushes off while his man is still fighting to recover his balance. The whistle blows, the crowd erupts, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hangs on the iron just long enough to make his point.
Backing all the way to half court with three fingers held over each eye, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar keeps the goggles on for the entire trip. The bench mob copies it in unison. The broadcast cuts to twelve grown men wearing invisible glasses. Peak television, honestly.
Bucket for Toronto Border-Patrol. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
Yaxel Lendeborg attacks the baseline and the ENTIRE defense has to rotate behind him! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Two points in every gym in America except this one, and Yaxel Lendeborg is walking back with both hands on his head.
GONE down the baseline! Yaxel Lendeborg beat him on the first step and the paint is collapsing. Way short from Yaxel Lendeborg off the bounce, the ball dies on the front of the rim and drops into traffic.
Cold blooded from Toronto Border-Patrol, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Watch the off-ball screen first, that is what frees Yaxel Lendeborg, and Allen Iverson just has to put it where nobody else can reach it.
Bow to the crowd, a full waist bend with one arm across the stomach, the whole theatrical thing. Yaxel Lendeborg holds it three seconds. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar applauds behind him like a valet. Somebody in row two throws a bouquet of obviously fake roses onto the floor, and Yaxel Lendeborg collects every last one.
Charlie Kirk mutters 'damn' under his breath. Yao Ming says 'yeah' in the same tone. And here is the answer to our game show Whammy Watch Live! Doris Ann Pickerel of Skunk Cabbage, Connecticut, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How tall is the shortest player who ever dunked in a dream?' The answer was of course five foot two, and the dream was extremely convincing. Doris Ann therefore wins a barrel of packing peanuts and absolutely nothing else! I discovered tonight that my mic was off for three minutes. Three minutes of pure genius, lost forever. Good night! And now, 'The Bachelor: Stray Cat Edition.' Who will find love in this dumpster?
Matchday 8 — vs Minnesota Ice-Wall
104-116 (L)
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Minnesota Ice-Wall with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
Charlie Kirk rides the ball handler all the way up the floor and finally puts a forearm in his back. Officials blow it dead. That is number THREE on Charlie Kirk, and we have not even reached the half.
Give and go! Allen Iverson gives it up, cuts, and gets it right back with a clear lane to the cup! Blocked into the floor. Allen Iverson will be seeing that one in his sleep.
Ball up the floor, change of speed right at the logo, and Charlie Kirk already has the defense a full step behind. That crossover was not about getting a shot up. Allen Iverson pulled it out to tell everybody in the gym whose possession this is. Nasty finish. Allen Iverson hangs, adjusts in midair, and drops it through.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Minnesota Ice-Wall in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Into the tunnel. Yao Ming grabs a banana on the way and devours it. Rumor has it Yao Ming does 100 push-ups before every game. Or 10. Depends who you ask. And now, our halftime TV game show Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! To win a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong, text HOOPS to 555-0066 and answer this question: 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' The arena lights up, the players are back. Game on.
The conspiracy theorist just ran that two-man game like he has a decade of film on it. Somebody get this man a contract. BAAAANG! Yaxel Lendeborg with the alley-oop finish, and the defender never even left the floor.
Somebody's towel goes up, then thirty of them, and the bench turns into a laundry emergency. Yaxel Lendeborg stands in the middle of it with his arms out, letting them rain down on his head. An assistant coach is spinning one like a helicopter. Institutional collapse.
Turnover, layup, Minnesota Ice-Wall straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Charlie Kirk kicks it over to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. OHHHH he went BACKDOOR! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar never broke stride and he has the ball UNDER THE RIM! Shot clock at one, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar just has to throw something at the rim. Nothing doing.
The offense stalls, Yao Ming gets stuck on the wing with no exit and nobody flashing open, and the shot clock eats him alive.
The help defender committed way too early, and Allen Iverson made him pay for it with a spin they will be replaying all week. Allen Iverson blows the wide open layup!
Dagger from Minnesota Ice-Wall. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
A single dribble is all Yaxel Lendeborg needed to get downhill, and the back side of that defense is in complete disarray. DOUBLE DRIBBLE! Yaxel Lendeborg picked it up, put it back down, and the whistle went off like a smoke alarm.
Watch the spacing there, Charlie Kirk hits Yaxel Lendeborg right in the shooting pocket and the possession stays alive. Yaxel Lendeborg holds it, waits, waits some more, then lets it go at the last possible instant to Allen Iverson flying by. That is a half-second window and he threads it. Wide open at the top of the key and Allen Iverson cannot make it count, the defense secures the board and takes off in transition.
Whistles. Monitor. And Allen Iverson standing frozen at midcourt. The officials come back out, cross their arms, and Allen Iverson goes from hero to spectator on one signal.
Yao Ming's complexion is grey. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's is red. Defeat comes in different colors. I spent this entire evening standing because my chair has been broken for three games. Nobody fixes it. Thanks for being here. Coming up: 'Forbidden Zone: Behind the Scenes of a Vending Machine.'
Matchday 9 — vs Houston Blast-Off
109-112 (L)
Nobody is getting a hand near that. Charlie Kirk has all the room in the world. Charlie Kirk lets it FLY from way downtown and... front rim. Not this time.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Charlie Kirk just did it by hitting Yaxel Lendeborg on the back side with acres of room. Hesitate, GO. Yaxel Lendeborg is by that hip before the man even blinks. Yaxel Lendeborg beat the clock by a tenth of a second and missed by about four feet. Technically legal, competitively pointless.
Eight seconds off the shot clock and Charlie Kirk has not wasted one of them, the ball reaching Yao Ming precisely where the play wanted it. Yao Ming stutters at the elbow, the defender bites on it, and now there is nothing but open floor between him and the rim. Twenty-four seconds of standing around, and Yao Ming has to eat the last two of them. Possession wasted long before the shot went up.
Second pass beats the rotation, Allen Iverson to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the closeout gets there about half a second too late. Not a hand on him. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar flat missed the bunny.
Watch Yaxel Lendeborg plant his feet, absorb the hit, and spring Charlie Kirk out of that corner in a blink. That is a dime from Yaxel Lendeborg that deserved so much better, and Charlie Kirk knows it, head down, jogging back before the ball even lands. Muscled away at the second jump by Yao Ming, and this offense resets with a fresh shot clock. The whole possession dies right there without Yao Ming on the offensive glass, and instead it becomes the two easiest points of the quarter.
Break! Allen Iverson grabs an ice bag and slaps it on his knee. Little secret: Allen Iverson has a secret TikTok account with 12 followers. Posts cooking tutorials. And now, our halftime TV game show Are You Smarter Than a Backup Center! To win a gift certificate to a diner that only takes cash, text HOOPS to 555-0804 and answer this question: 'Why are basketball nets never quite long enough to be scarves?' We're off again! The crowd chants the team's name.
Bucket for Houston Blast-Off. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
They do not teach that in the conspiracy theorist handbook, and yet here we are. Beautiful little exchange. Isolation on the wing, shot clock draining, and Allen Iverson rocks the defender to sleep before dropping it through.
Allen Iverson runs the baseline high-fiving every hand hanging over the rail, all the way to the corner and back. It takes forever. Play is waiting on him. Nobody in the building wants it to stop, including, visibly, the officials.
Look how low Allen Iverson keeps that shoulder on the drive, that is how you turn a sliver of space into a walk to the rim. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar threads a BEAUTY to Allen Iverson under the rim and... he lays it off the bottom of the iron! Ohhhh, no.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Houston Blast-Off, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
OHHHH the bench is GONE! Towels over heads, bodies off the chairs, all because of Allen Iverson!
More second chance points for Houston Blast-Off, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
The conspiracy theorist just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. OHHHH the pin-down! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pops out clean while the defender is STILL tangled up with Yaxel Lendeborg. Brutal. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scooped that in from underneath the rim!
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar crosses his arms into an X, plants his feet at the top of the key and dares somebody to say something. Nobody does. Yao Ming mirrors the pose beside him. Two statues, twenty thousand people screaming, and every camera in the gym pointed at them.
Yao Ming walks it up past the timeline, nine seconds showing, and you can feel the air go out of this arena. Two seconds left, Yao Ming rises, perfect footwork, perfect release, and the ball rattles out like the hoop had a lid on it.
Allen Iverson's brow is furrowed, lips pressed thin. Yao Ming breathes through his nose, hard, steady, trying to calm down. And here is the answer to our game show Are You Smarter Than a Backup Center! Ricky Don Sturgill of Sassafras Bottom, Virginia, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Why are basketball nets never quite long enough to be scarves?' The answer was of course that the scarf lobby got to the rules committee in 1954. Ricky Don therefore wins a gift certificate to a diner that only takes cash! Evening confession: I'm wearing Allen Iverson's jersey under my shirt. For morale. See you tomorrow. In the meantime, it's 'Who Wants to Marry My Goldfish.' Good luck with that.
Matchday 10 — vs Denver Horse-Track
93-101 (L)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar times the leap perfectly, taps it back to the wing, and the first possession of the night belongs to us.
STOP AND GO! Allen Iverson hit the brakes, hit the gas, and the lane opened up like a garage door. It went halfway down! The ball sat in the cylinder, thought about it, and rolled off the far side on Allen Iverson. Cruel.
Yao Ming pushes it in transition, pulls up from the elbow, cash. That is a 10-0 run and the visitors have not scored in three minutes. TIMEOUT! The other bench has seen enough of Allen Iverson and they are burning one to stop the bleeding.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Denver Horse-Track in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Watch the sell from Allen Iverson here, he leans in, he gets the defender leaning with him, and then he backs away into all that space. That is twice tonight Allen Iverson has tried to create with the dribble already dead, and this league does not reward that.
The locker room. Allen Iverson sprawls out full-length on the bench. Small detail: Allen Iverson whistles the national anthem before every game. Off-key. Consistently off-key. And now, our halftime TV game show Minute to Win It Back! To win a lawn ornament goose with exactly one seasonal outfit, text HOOPS to 555-0319 and answer this question: 'What is the halftime score of a game that nobody is watching?' Let's go, we're back. The crowd claps in rhythm.
Arm across the body, whistle, dead ball. Reach on Charlie Kirk. Fourth personal on Charlie Kirk. The arena groans, the bench goes silent, and the other team just spotted daylight.
More second chance points for Denver Horse-Track, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
SKIP PASS! Charlie Kirk fires it cross court to Yao Ming and the defense is dead in the water! Baseline spin from Yao Ming at full speed, and his man never even gets a hand into the picture. Filthy stuff. Two defenders in the lane, Yao Ming splits them, double clutches and kisses it off the square. Count it!
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Denver Horse-Track with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Yaxel Lendeborg just did it by hitting Yao Ming on the back side with acres of room. Ball into Charlie Kirk at the elbow, Yao Ming plants his foot and goes backdoor, and the pass meets him in the air. Filthy. BAAAANG! Yao Ming from the logo, and the entire bench is on its feet losing its mind!
Yao Ming mimes putting a whole section to sleep, hands folded against his cheek, eyes shut. He is facing the Denver Horse-Track fans who paid for the good seats. They boo. He nods along with the boos, which somehow makes the home crowd louder.
Turnover, layup, Denver Horse-Track straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
OHHHH that is filthy! Charlie Kirk on the handoff and the man guarding it is still fighting over the top. Stuck out on the perimeter with no outlet, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar panics, re-dribbles, and hands the possession over on a silver platter.
Screen, pop, SPLASH! Charlie Kirk kicks it out and that thing never touched iron. Not close, not warm, not anywhere for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, straight into the hands of a defender who never had to leave his feet.
Hold everything, they are going to the replay on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and this building has stopped breathing. Cold, clinical, and correct. That monitor just took everything from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar takes off his shoes and carries them like a ghost. Allen Iverson follows the same path. And here is the answer to our game Minute to Win It Back! Otis Fenstermacher of Tin Roof, Virginia, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'What is the halftime score of a game that nobody is watching?' The answer was of course still tied, philosophically speaking. Otis takes home a lawn ornament goose with exactly one seasonal outfit! I learned that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's father was a conspiracy theorist. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Good evening! Now: 'Destination Unknown: The Roundabout in Scranton, PA.' Total adventure.
Matchday 11 — vs New York Over-Timers
98-110 (L)
Won it clean! Yao Ming got up and over him with room to spare.
Watch the spacing, Charlie Kirk drags two bodies toward the ball and Yaxel Lendeborg is standing alone behind the line. Geometry, not luck. The block is clean, the ball is gone, and Yaxel Lendeborg is left staring at his empty hands like a man who lost his keys.
Cold blooded from New York Over-Timers, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Yaxel Lendeborg threw it before the help even committed. Charlie Kirk comes flying off that screen and he is WIDE open! The conspiracy theorist launched one from the logo as the horn sounded. In fairness, nobody in that huddle gave him a better option.
The conspiracy theorist runs a dribble handoff with the timing of a fifteen-year vet. Not bad for somebody who does this on weekends. Yao Ming gets to his spot in the lane, lifts the runner over the big man, and leaves it a foot short. No dice. Second-chance points are how you steal games on the road, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has now cleaned up four misses tonight. Miss, tip, bucket. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar makes his living in the wreckage.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar freezes in his follow-through, wrist still hanging, and holds it while the New York Over-Timers coach burns a timeout out of pure desperation. He holds it through the whistle. He holds it into the huddle. The cameras eat every single second of it.
Finally a breather. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has calf cramps, the physio rushes over. Confession: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar believes the away locker room is haunted. Refuses to go in alone. And now, our halftime TV game show The Newlywed Timeout! To win a family size bag of off brand cheese puffs, text HOOPS to 555-0472 and answer this question: 'How far away can a scoreboard buzzer be heard by a dog?' Back on the court. The crowd greets them with a standing ovation.
Charlie Kirk drives, draws two bodies, and swings it one more time to the corner. That is the pass nobody is required to make. Fifth possession this half where Allen Iverson has been left to bail everybody out with the clock at zero. He cannot keep doing this alone.
New York Over-Timers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Push the pace! Charlie Kirk grabs it and hits Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in stride before the defense can even match up. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar comes off the screen and the big man drops WAY back. Charlie Kirk just fades to the arc for the cleanest look of the night. The conspiracy theorist hammers a brick off the backboard so hard the rim is still shaking. Nothing in that resume prepared anybody for this.
More second chance points for New York Over-Timers, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Late rotation from Yao Ming, he arrives half a beat behind the drive and the contact is obvious to everybody in the building. Yao Ming throws his head back, because he knows exactly what it means. His minutes are somebody else's decision now.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, New York Over-Timers, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Set called, Allen Iverson waved out to the corner, and Charlie Kirk watches the spacing open up like a front door. The defender planted his feet, and Allen Iverson said thank you very much and drove straight through his front pocket. Nobody moved, nobody cut, nobody set a screen, so Allen Iverson launches a contested jumper with the horn already going. Ugly offense.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Yaxel Lendeborg just did it by hitting Yao Ming on the back side with acres of room. Everybody in the arena knew the stepback was coming from Yao Ming, and not one single soul could do anything about it. OHHHH the POWER! Yao Ming took the hit and finished it anyway!
OHHHH the tension! Nobody is sitting, nobody is blinking, all of it rides on Yao Ming. Late by a blink. Yao Ming is going to see that frame in his sleep tonight.
Charlie Kirk leaves the court at a jog. Allen Iverson stays there, planted at center court, motionless. And here is the answer to our game show The Newlywed Timeout! Dewey Spillman of Frostbite Flats, Minnesota, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How far away can a scoreboard buzzer be heard by a dog?' The answer was of course three and a half miles, and the dog does not care for it. Dewey therefore wins a family size bag of off brand cheese puffs! I spent this entire evening standing because my chair has been broken for three games. Nobody fixes it. We're done for tonight. And now: 'Ancient Aliens: The True History of the Coffee Break.'
Matchday 12 — vs Cleveland Twin-Towers
111-110 (W)
Clean feed from Charlie Kirk, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. Charlie Kirk eats the contact so Kareem Abdul-Jabbar can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. That is what heavy minutes do, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has run all night and the legs have nothing left to give the jumper.
Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the conspiracy theorist made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. The defense keeps turning contested looks by Charlie Kirk into free points. STOP REACHING. Two for two from the conspiracy theorist, calm as a Tuesday afternoon. Whatever that job involves all day, it clearly builds very steady hands.
Stone silence for one second, then Charlie Kirk lets out something that is not really a word, more a sound from the basement of a human being. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar answers with the same noise. The arena joins in. There is no language left in this building.
Screen, hesitation, delivery, Allen Iverson drops it off perfectly for Charlie Kirk diving to the rim. The filthy euro-step in traffic was the idea, but the feet got greedy and the whistle blew Charlie Kirk dead.
Both coaches are up off the bench pleading while the officials walk the Allen Iverson sequence back frame by frame. The replay is clear: the last fingertip belonged to the defender, so possession comes back to Allen Iverson and his guys.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Cleveland Twin-Towers with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The players disappear. Yaxel Lendeborg has a makeshift neck brace out of a towel. Anecdote: Yaxel Lendeborg threw up before his first pro game. No more pre-game burgers ever since. And now, our halftime TV game show Go Fish for Answers! To win a porch swing missing every single chain, text HOOPS to 555-0468 and answer this question: 'What is the average lifespan of a whistle used in a middle school gym?' The players are back. Some look fresh, others... Not so much.
Total control. Charlie Kirk has this thing on a string. Two defenders collide on the handoff and Allen Iverson is gone, so Kareem Abdul-Jabbar earned that one even if the box score disagrees. Watch the footwork from Allen Iverson: one-two into the paint, no charge, feathery touch off the glass. Filthy craft.
Nobody dribbled, nobody isolated, Allen Iverson and Charlie Kirk just played basketball and the defense got shredded. Third look from distance for Allen Iverson tonight and the arc keeps flattening out, tired legs writing checks the jumper cannot cash.
Here is the part that never makes the highlight package: Charlie Kirk controlling tempo, burning clock, hunting the mismatch the second one shows up. That hesitation move is exactly why they keep sending a second body at Allen Iverson the moment he crosses half court. Catching it right at the cup with nobody within eight feet, Allen Iverson goes up too strong and the ball rides high off the backboard.
Dagger from Cleveland Twin-Towers. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Iso time. Yaxel Lendeborg up top, one jab step, and the defender is already on SKATES. Offensive foul on Yaxel Lendeborg. No bucket, no free throws, just a turnover.
SKIP PASS! Allen Iverson fires it cross court to Yaxel Lendeborg and the defense is dead in the water! Left, right, gone. Yaxel Lendeborg put that defender on skates and never even looked back. That is the shot Yaxel Lendeborg wants every trip down the floor, it drops nine nights out of ten, and tonight is the tenth.
The assistant points at the far corner, the head coach points at Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the other three get told exactly where to stand. Yaxel Lendeborg takes the inbound, one dribble left, rises over the closeout, and the horn sounds while the net is still snapping. COUNT IT!
Ice in the veins: Yaxel Lendeborg taps two fingers on his wrist, slow and cold, while the horn is still fading. Courtside is standing on the chairs. The visiting bench does not move an inch. Somebody in the second row has already turned it into a T-shirt.
Charlie Kirk runs to the coach and lifts the coach up. Not thrilled but smiles anyway. And here is the answer to our game show Go Fish for Answers! Peggy Ann Winterbottom of Two Chairs, Nebraska, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the average lifespan of a whistle used in a middle school gym?' The answer was of course six years, or two seasons of an especially loud coach. Peggy Ann therefore wins a porch swing missing every single chain! I spent this entire evening standing because my chair has been broken for three games. Nobody fixes it. That's all! Coming up: 'Hotel Hell: Airbnb With No Lock Edition.' Chills guaranteed.
Matchday 13 — vs Boston Ring-Chasers
102-93 (W)
Clean feed from Yaxel Lendeborg, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Allen Iverson whips that pass one-handed on the move and the roll man gathers it through contact. Filthy. You can hear that rim ringing from up here, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has forced three in a row now and the whole offense has stopped moving.
The longer they stay at that monitor, the louder this place gets, and Yao Ming is refusing to look at the big screen. BAAAANG, make that THREE! The replay has the toe of Yao Ming clean behind the line!
The noise climbs past whatever the building was engineered for, and Yao Ming uses it to kneel down and retie a shoe that was already tied. Double knot, no hurry, eyes on the laces. Yaxel Lendeborg stands over him like a bodyguard while somewhere down there a coach calls a play into a hurricane and loses.
The beauty of it is that Charlie Kirk never has to set a screen at all, the exchange IS the screen. Nightmare to guard. OHHHHH POSTERIZED! Allen Iverson just ENDED that defender at the rim!
Kisses the biceps, one and then the other, and Allen Iverson strolls to the free throw line like a man on vacation. Yaxel Lendeborg fans him with a rolled-up game program. The bench is in tears. Even the guy running the game clock is grinning into his monitor.
Pass, cut, catch, wide open. Four things in about a second and a half from Allen Iverson. Off the back iron for Allen Iverson, that one had all the distance and none of the accuracy, and the board goes the other way.
The conspiracy theorist is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. Yaxel Lendeborg rips it back into the stepback and suddenly there is a country mile between him and that defender. Baby hook by Yaxel Lendeborg, right over that outstretched hand, high off the board, count it.
Off comes the headband, launched into the crowd like a rock star, and the fight for it delays the inbound. Yaxel Lendeborg watches two adults wrestle in row four. Half the arena is filming that instead of the game. Everybody in here has lost the plot.
Cut! Halftime. Allen Iverson's jersey is completely drenched in sweat. Did you know? Allen Iverson once signed an autograph for a referee. During the game. Mid free-throw. And now, our halftime TV game show Cash Cab of a Pickup Truck! To win a bag of forty-two mismatched socks, all for the left foot, text HOOPS to 555-0173 and answer this question: 'What do you call a free throw that goes in after hitting the ceiling?' Both teams retake the hardwood. Everything is still up for grabs.
Personal foul on the conspiracy theorist. Somewhere a shift is going uncovered and not one soul in this arena cares. Losing Charlie Kirk to fouls changes this defense completely, because nobody left on that roster can handle the matchup.
Over the top of everybody. Allen Iverson to Yaxel Lendeborg in the corner, wide open, catch and rise. OHHHH he went BACKDOOR! Yaxel Lendeborg never broke stride and he has the ball UNDER THE RIM! The big man never even contested it, and Yaxel Lendeborg still could not get the runner to drop. That one is on him.
Boston Ring-Chasers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Dribble handoff from Charlie Kirk, and the defender gets wiped out on the exchange! That is body control you simply cannot coach: Allen Iverson stays up a full beat longer than everybody else and finishes clean.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Boston Ring-Chasers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
It started as a hard box out and it ended with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar throwing an elbow the crew could not possibly ignore.
Hold everything, they are going to the replay on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and this building has stopped breathing. OHHHH the cruelty! Two tenths, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gets absolutely nothing.
Allen Iverson grabs the PA announcer's mic and shouts Charlie Kirk's name. The announcer chases him. And here is the answer to our game Cash Cab of a Pickup Truck! Harlan Spivey of Bent Fender, Montana, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'What do you call a free throw that goes in after hitting the ceiling?' The answer was of course a blessing, and the whole gym has to be re-blessed. Harlan takes home a bag of forty-two mismatched socks, all for the left foot! On my end, the AC in the booth broke down. I sweated more than Charlie Kirk. That's a wrap! And now, the network's masterpiece: 'My Cat, My Battle.' Don't miss the finale.
Matchday 14 — vs San Antonio Skyscrapers
90-120 (L)
Bucket for San Antonio Skyscrapers. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
That is vision. Yaxel Lendeborg sees the pocket open for a tenth of a second and puts the ball in it. Bless him, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tried a move he has clearly only ever pulled off in an empty gym at midnight. Walk.
Yaxel Lendeborg launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. OHHHH he went BACKDOOR! Allen Iverson never broke stride and he has the ball UNDER THE RIM! Two points left on the floor by Allen Iverson, and those are exactly the ones that come back to bite you in the fourth.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. San Antonio Skyscrapers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Reverse it, make them slide all over again, that is how Allen Iverson breaks a shell down. Yao Ming feels the contact, spins off that shoulder, and the defender is left hugging a whole lot of nothing. Yao Ming gathers on the baseline, absorbs contact from two bodies, and slams it home. That rim is still shaking.
Players head to the locker room. Yaxel Lendeborg has tape on three fingers. Did you know? Yaxel Lendeborg has a personal mini-fridge in the locker room. Nobody knows what's inside. And now, our halftime TV game show The Newlywed Timeout! To win a family size bag of off brand cheese puffs, text HOOPS to 555-0472 and answer this question: 'How far away can a scoreboard buzzer be heard by a dog?' The players jog toward the court. The air is electric.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Yaxel Lendeborg threw it before the help even committed. Unselfish basketball. Charlie Kirk passes up a good shot and hands Allen Iverson a GREAT one. Long and gone. Allen Iverson floats the teardrop over everything and bangs it off the back iron.
Ohhh no. Corner three, San Antonio Skyscrapers in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Body to body all the way to the rim and the arm goes up. That is on Charlie Kirk, and this crew is not letting anything go tonight. That is a brutal one to swallow. The other team is going to hunt Charlie Kirk on every possession until he is gone.
This is the counter: Charlie Kirk punished a defense that kept going under, and now they have to rip up the game plan. Oh my. Allen Iverson did not even draw iron.
Ball moves. Allen Iverson to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on time and on target. Textbook two-man game: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar keeps the dribble alive, forces the big man to commit, and Allen Iverson rolls into an open runway. Contested, off balance, fading away from the wrong shoulder, that is a shot Allen Iverson should never take with three teammates standing wide open.
San Antonio Skyscrapers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Kick out to Charlie Kirk, one more to Allen Iverson, splash from the wing and this bench is on its feet. OHHHH, that one died in the air! Allen Iverson put nothing into it and the front rim eats the floater. Yaxel Lendeborg SKIES for it! Extra life for this offense. Yaxel Lendeborg crashes the glass, snatches that miss out of the air and hammers it home. Onions!
Eight seconds off the shot clock and Charlie Kirk has not wasted one of them, the ball reaching Yao Ming precisely where the play wanted it. Yao Ming splits the coverage with a bounce pass you need slow motion to appreciate. Dimes. Yaxel Lendeborg fires that thing at the backboard like it owes him money. No chance from the moment it left his hand.
Inbounds pass and Charlie Kirk is on him instantly, two hands on the jersey, whistle. The clock freezes at nineteen point four.
Yaxel Lendeborg sits on the floor in the hallway. Allen Iverson sits down next to him. Nobody speaks. During the game, my colleague ordered sushi. It arrived at the final buzzer. Perfect timing. We're signing off. And now: 'Musical Chairs: Subway Seat Edition.' Winner takes all.
Matchday 15 — vs Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest
75-117 (L)
Eight seconds off the shot clock and Charlie Kirk has not wasted one of them, the ball reaching Allen Iverson precisely where the play wanted it. OHHHH the pocket pass! Allen Iverson splits the coverage and the roll man is loose under the basket! Gift wrapped by Yaxel Lendeborg, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar cannot finish the two footer. That one is going to sting.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
One little shoulder dip from Allen Iverson and the guy guarding him turned into a traffic cone in real time. Filthy patience from Allen Iverson. He waits for the fly-by, leans into it, and turns one possession into three free points.
Trapped in the corner of the backcourt, Allen Iverson picks up his dribble, and the clock does the rest.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Allen Iverson just did it by hitting Charlie Kirk on the back side with acres of room. Allen Iverson sets the pick and DIVES to the cup. Charlie Kirk lays it right on his hands in traffic! That is the kind of finish that changes a defense's body language, and Allen Iverson has already done it twice this quarter.
Break. Allen Iverson's socks are soaking wet — quick change on the spot. Did you know? Allen Iverson tried to become a rapper before basketball. The world dodged a bullet. And now, our halftime TV game show The Chase But Everyone Is Walking! To win a milk crate full of cassette tapes with no labels, text HOOPS to 555-0853 and answer this question: 'What is the record for most consecutive high fives that missed?' Resetting the counters for this second half. Well, not really.
Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Total control. Charlie Kirk has this thing on a string. That is the third time tonight Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has cut behind the same shoulder, and nobody on that bench has fixed it yet. You can hear this arena react a half second before the ball even goes through, and that tells you everything about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Nothing but a nod. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar jogs back on defense with his eyes half closed, like the shot was a formality he had penciled in. The entire arena is levitating and he could not look less involved. The Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest bench looks personally insulted.
Turnover, layup, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Set called, Allen Iverson waved out to the corner, and Charlie Kirk watches the spacing open up like a front door. OHHHH the separation! Allen Iverson just manufactured three feet of daylight out of absolutely nothing. The crowd has found its chant, and Allen Iverson is going to be hearing it all night.
Cold blooded from Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Ice in his veins for a guy who answers to conspiracy theorist the rest of the week. Professional shot, amateur resume. Fifth possession this half where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been left to bail everybody out with the clock at zero. He cannot keep doing this alone.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
SKIP PASS! Allen Iverson fires it cross court to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the defense is dead in the water! Yao Ming eats the contact so Kareem Abdul-Jabbar can run free along the baseline, and the catch-and-shoot look is right there. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rises up from fifteen feet and OHHHH, that rattled in and OUT!
Ball moves. Allen Iverson to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on time and on target. SPIN and GO! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pirouettes right through the traffic and comes out the other side clean! Stuck holding it as the clock bleeds out, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fades away from twenty-six feet, and it is not close.
Screen, roll, DELIVERY from Charlie Kirk! Nothing but runway to the rim! OFF THE IRON and halfway to the bench! Yaxel Lendeborg missed that one with real conviction.
Charlie Kirk hurls his water bottle at the wall. Allen Iverson flinches but doesn't react. And here is the answer to our game show The Chase But Everyone Is Walking! Otis Wagstaff of Empty Barrel, Nevada, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the record for most consecutive high fives that missed?' The answer was of course forty one, set at a rec league in 1998 and never approached since. Otis therefore wins a milk crate full of cassette tapes with no labels! Did you know that Allen Iverson practices conspiracy theorist on Tuesdays? Builds character, that does. Good evening! Up next: 'Fixer Upper: Renovating a Studio on a Twelve-Dollar Budget.' Challenge accepted.
My Team finishes #13 (4W-11L). Better luck next season! MVP: Yao Ming.
