Pre-season
Alright, sit your ass down for two minutes because tonight we're not messing around, we're diving headfirst into a sold-out arena that smells like rubber and sweat, with 20,000 fans ready to lose their damn voices. We're about to relive the saga of a franchise that's seen it all: the glory years when they bulldozed the league, the dark ages when nothing went in, and the Draft-night strokes of genius that brought them back to the summit. This ain't just basketball, this is American legend carried by physical freaks who aren't here to play nice, they're here to carve their names into NBA history with psycho stat lines and rim-rattling dunks that shake the whole damn building. The team with no name, baby! Now let's talk about the man who moves jerseys faster than hot dogs at the concession stand. LeBron James. Just the name sends chills through the building. Standing at 206 cm, arms that cover half the court, and a basketball IQ so fast that defenders feel like they're playing in slow motion. This man doesn't walk, he glides. He doesn't jump, he launches into orbit. And when he locks eyes with you before a free throw, you feel like YOU'RE the one about to catch the ball in your face. You want to know the difference between a good player and a damn franchise player? It's the fourth quarter. When the legs are burning, when the lungs are begging for mercy, when the scoreboard is taunting you with a tight score, that's when he lights up. Like a diesel engine finally hitting its temperature. The first three quarters are the warm-up. The fourth quarter is his hunting ground. And the prey? It's the teams that thought they had a chance. And now, the moment nobody was waiting for but everybody is going to love: the coach signed Genghis Khan. The man is a military leader. A freaking military leader. In a league where everybody is 6'8" and runs a 4.4 forty, he rolls up with battle standard and a suspicious amount of enthusiasm. His first instinct walking into the locker room? Ask where the coffee machine was. His second instinct? Try to dribble and bounce the ball straight into his own face. The teammates lost it. The coach just said "that's the kind of grit I was looking for." We still don't know if he was serious or completely hammered. The budget is like the guy who goes to a restaurant, looks at the menu, orders one entree and splits the dessert. It's not poverty, but it's not the high life either. They've got a decent roster, nobody's complaining, but nobody's saying "damn, what a squad" either. Solid without being spectacular. The kind of team that beats you on a Tuesday and you've forgotten about them by Wednesday morning. But underestimate them and they'll make you pay.
Matchday 1 — vs Detroit Engine-Roar
95-125 (L)
OHHHH he SNATCHED that tip! LeBron James rips it out of the air and we are off.
Bucket for Detroit Engine-Roar. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
SKIP PASS! Lana Rhoades fires it cross court to Genghis Khan and the defense is dead in the water! Straight down the baseline goes the military leader! Whatever shift he worked this morning, he clearly left plenty in the tank. Genghis Khan had that one all the way, perfect release, perfect arc, and the rim simply refuses to let it drop.
Detroit Engine-Roar again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Laser from Socrates, corner to corner, and that closeout gets there about a second and a half too late. Look how low LeBron James keeps that shoulder on the drive, that is how you turn a sliver of space into a walk to the rim. Third look from distance for LeBron James tonight and the arc keeps flattening out, tired legs writing checks the jumper cannot cash.
The players head to the locker room. Genghis Khan is sweating like a racehorse. Anecdote: Genghis Khan tried to impress the Detroit Engine-Roar players with a warm-up dunk. Hit the rim. With his face. And now, our halftime TV game show To Tell the Truth-ish! To win a wall clock shaped like a rooster that crows at random, text HOOPS to 555-0330 and answer this question: 'What is the scientific name for the smell of a middle school gymnasium?' There they are. The coach must have found the right words.
Across half court, a quick survey, a point to the weak side, and Lana Rhoades drops it off to Goku on time and on target. Day job, then this: the farmer reads a rolling big like a coach with twenty years on the bench. The help defender had position, leverage, everything but a chance. Lana Rhoades rose straight over the top of him, and one.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Genghis Khan just did it by hitting Socrates on the back side with acres of room. Here comes the slip from Goku, and Socrates reads it a half second before anybody else in the building. That is a dime from Socrates that deserved so much better, and Goku knows it, head down, jogging back before the ball even lands.
Iso for the tv host, and after the shift that man put in today, the defender is the one I feel sorry for. The tv host just flattened a man who had both feet planted. Charge, turnover, and a very quiet walk back on defense.
Over the top of everybody. Socrates to Genghis Khan in the corner, wide open, catch and rise. The military leader runs a dribble handoff with the timing of a fifteen-year vet. Not bad for somebody who does this on weekends. Socrates rises up from fifteen feet and OHHHH, that rattled in and OUT!
The tv host just threaded a pocket pass through two defenders. Where exactly did that vision come from? That little shot is what keeps guards employed in this league, and LeBron James has it on a string tonight.
The noise climbs past whatever the building was engineered for, and LeBron James uses it to kneel down and retie a shoe that was already tied. Double knot, no hurry, eyes on the laces. Goku stands over him like a bodyguard while somewhere down there a coach calls a play into a hurricane and loses.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Detroit Engine-Roar with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The tv host grabbed a full handful of jersey and the crew counted every finger. He does not get away with that at work either.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Detroit Engine-Roar, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Five bodies moving as one, Genghis Khan barking out every rotation, and there is not a crack anywhere in this thing. The tv host out here on the deck fighting for loose balls. Nobody pays him for that, and he could not care less.
LeBron James lets out a nervous laugh that sends chills down your spine. Genghis Khan decides not to comment. And here is the answer to our game To Tell the Truth-ish! Merle Hackenbush of Muddy Boot, Illinois, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'What is the scientific name for the smell of a middle school gymnasium?' The answer was of course nostalgia, with strong notes of floor wax. Merle takes home a wall clock shaped like a rooster that crows at random! During the third quarter, I spilled my soup. Yes, I had soup in the booth. Don't judge. Thanks for being here. Coming up: 'Forbidden Zone: Behind the Scenes of a Vending Machine.'
Matchday 2 — vs Miami Heart-Attack
102-95 (W)
Tip goes to the farmer, who spends most of the week nowhere near a gym. Explain that one to me.
Dribble handoff from Lana Rhoades, and the defender gets wiped out on the exchange! So close. Socrates can only stare at the iron.
Look at the shoulders on the philosopher. Everybody has a rough shift at work, but most people do not have twenty thousand witnesses. Genghis Khan beat the clock by a tenth of a second and missed by about four feet. Technically legal, competitively pointless.
Turnover, layup, Miami Heart-Attack straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
The ball travels faster than five defenders can, and Lana Rhoades has known that all night long. Whirl, and GONE! Genghis Khan leaves the defender grabbing at a jersey that stopped being there half a second ago. OHHHH what a FINISH from Genghis Khan! Hanging, hanging, and laying it high off the glass on the way down!
Back to the locker room. LeBron James punches his locker. Fun fact: LeBron James was voted best-looking player on the team. By his mom. In a poll she created herself. And now, our halftime TV game show Pawn Stars of the Neighborhood! To win a corn dog the size of a mailbox, already gone cold, text HOOPS to 555-0433 and answer this question: 'What is the average airspeed of a paper airplane thrown from the upper deck?' Act two! The bench players are fired up, the starters too.
A cut with that timing from the military leader? He is on the clock somewhere else all week and he still found time to learn the two-man game. Prayer from Genghis Khan. Not answered.
More second chance points for Miami Heart-Attack, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Somebody explain how the tv host reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. OHHHH that is filthy! Genghis Khan on the handoff and the man guarding it is still fighting over the top. Heat check for Socrates and it is GOOD. He is COOKING, and this building knows exactly what it is watching.
Eight on the shot clock, Genghis Khan gets a piece of the entry, and the whole set is dead on arrival. Rebound to fast break in one motion, courtesy of the military leader. That is not a hobby, that is a skill set. Somebody check that job title again: the philosopher hanging in the air like the paint owes him rent, and finishing anyway.
That hesitation move is exactly why they keep sending a second body at Genghis Khan the moment he crosses half court. That is a shot selection problem, plain and simple. Genghis Khan drove into three bodies and the help defender was waiting the whole way.
The philosopher just ran a give and go to perfection on national television! Somebody go tell his boss what he does after hours! Somewhere a defender is explaining to his family why the philosopher is going to be on the front page tomorrow morning.
The military leader just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. LeBron James rips it back into the stepback and suddenly there is a country mile between him and that defender. LeBron James gets to his spot in the lane, lifts the runner over the big man, and leaves it a foot short. No dice.
Goku and Socrates run circles around Genghis Khan who doesn't move. Zen. And here is the answer to our game Pawn Stars of the Neighborhood! Bud Applewhite of Cornbread Hill, Oregon, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'What is the average airspeed of a paper airplane thrown from the upper deck?' The answer was of course roughly one usher per second. Bud takes home a corn dog the size of a mailbox, already gone cold! Final confession: I still don't know how to pronounce Goku's name. Forgive me. We're packing up. Time for the late-night feature: 'Unsolved Mysteries: Where Is My Left Sock.'
Matchday 3 — vs Orlando Magic-Beans
106-84 (W)
The help defender committed way too early, and Genghis Khan made him pay for it with a spin they will be replaying all week. The block is clean, the ball is gone, and Genghis Khan is left staring at his empty hands like a man who lost his keys.
Second rejection of the quarter for Goku, and you can see the shooters hesitating on that wing already.
Third one of these from Lana Rhoades this quarter, third time the arc is wrong. The lane is not open real estate anymore. The philosopher outworked everybody on the glass! Effort does not care what is printed on your business card. The philosopher just went up over everybody and put that miss back with two hands. That is a night he tells his grandkids about!
The tv host is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. Oldest play in the book, and Socrates runs it in his sleep. That drop coverage never had a prayer. Lana Rhoades threads a BEAUTY to Goku under the rim and... he lays it off the bottom of the iron! Ohhhh, no.
Lana Rhoades launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. Two guys on the exact same page, Genghis Khan and Socrates, and the defense is left holding a bag of nothing. From eight feet Genghis Khan puts way too much on it, and the ball clears the rim entirely.
Halftime! Socrates has the hardwood pattern imprinted on his elbow. Little scoop: Socrates logs every game in a notebook. With stars and smiley faces. At that age. And now, our halftime TV game show Wipeout the Rec League Edition! To win a weather vane pointing a direction wind has never once gone, text HOOPS to 555-0914 and answer this question: 'How many bleacher splinters are removed nationwide every Tuesday?' And we're off! The energy in the arena just went up a notch.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Orlando Magic-Beans in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
That is the pass nobody puts on a highlight reel, and Socrates makes it every single trip down the floor. Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the tv host made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. Way short from Lana Rhoades off the bounce, the ball dies on the front of the rim and drops into traffic.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Orlando Magic-Beans with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
The entry pass never comes, the count keeps running, and Goku gets whistled out of his own paint.
Socrates lets it FLY from way downtown and... front rim. Not this time. Hustle play of the night so far. LeBron James gave up his ribs for one extra possession and the bench is on its feet. Up over the box out, and LeBron James catches it clean and finishes strong through the contact. Somebody just got posterized.
Chest bump so violent that LeBron James and Genghis Khan both end up on the hardwood. They lie there laughing while play is stopped. A trainer jogs out to make sure nobody cracked a rib. The crowd is chanting before either man gets back to his feet.
DENIED! LeBron James pins it flush on the backboard and screams NOT HERE, NOT TODAY. OHHHH the speed of LeBron James! Nobody in this building was catching him.
LeBron James mimes putting a whole section to sleep, hands folded against his cheek, eyes shut. He is facing the Orlando Magic-Beans fans who paid for the good seats. They boo. He nods along with the boos, which somehow makes the home crowd louder.
The coach just drew up the biggest play of the night for the military leader, a sentence I did not expect to say out loud this evening. That is the third time out of a timeout tonight that LeBron James has gotten a look this clean. The whiteboard is undefeated.
Somebody's towel goes up, then thirty of them, and the bench turns into a laundry emergency. LeBron James stands in the middle of it with his arms out, letting them rain down on his head. An assistant coach is spinning one like a helicopter. Institutional collapse.
Socrates cries tears of joy in Goku's arms. Lana Rhoades is also crying but nobody knows why. And here is the answer to our game show Wipeout the Rec League Edition! Lavonne Stackhouse of Grease Rag Creek, Delaware, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many bleacher splinters are removed nationwide every Tuesday?' The answer was of course six hundred and twelve, and most of them in the Midwest. Lavonne therefore wins a weather vane pointing a direction wind has never once gone! I spent the evening explaining basketball rules to my new intern. He still thinks you can walk with the ball. Good evening! Coming up: 'Dancing with the Stars: My Cousin's Wedding Edition.' Open bar.
Matchday 4 — vs Philadelphia Injury-Report
95-115 (L)
Push the pace! Lana Rhoades grabs it and hits Socrates in stride before the defense can even match up. OHHHHH HE SNATCHED HIS ANKLES! Socrates left him on the hardwood and this building is SHAKING! Gift wrapped by LeBron James, and Socrates cannot finish the two footer. That one is going to sting.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Lana Rhoades threw it before the help even committed. The military leader just ran that two-man game like he has a decade of film on it. Somebody get this man a contract. Two points left on the floor by LeBron James, and those are exactly the ones that come back to bite you in the fourth.
Socrates kicks it over to Lana Rhoades, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. Watch the sell from Lana Rhoades here, he leans in, he gets the defender leaning with him, and then he backs away into all that space. No good. Lana Rhoades rushed that one.
Dagger from Philadelphia Injury-Report. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Nobody is getting a hand near that. Genghis Khan has all the room in the world. The military leader just turned a straight-up mugging into a three-point play. Whatever the day job pays, it is nowhere near enough.
That's a cut. Goku stumbles slightly reaching the locker room. Little scoop: Goku collects Pokemon cards. That Charizard is worth more than his first contract. And now, our halftime TV game show Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! To win a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong, text HOOPS to 555-0066 and answer this question: 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' Resetting the counters for this second half. Well, not really.
Cold blooded from Philadelphia Injury-Report, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Give and go! Genghis Khan gives it up, cuts, and gets it right back with a clear lane to the cup! The military leader just put somebody on a POSTER! That defender is going to see this clip for the rest of his life!
More second chance points for Philadelphia Injury-Report, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Pressure the length of the floor, Goku splits one trap but not the second, and the eight count expires two feet short of halfcourt.
Beautiful footwork on that one from Lana Rhoades, the pivot foot never budges, which is precisely why the whistle stays in the pocket. Missed layup for the tv host and the whole arena groans as one. Great hands in the day job, apparently they do not travel.
Day job, then this: the tv host reads a rolling big like a coach with twenty years on the bench. Oh, that is rough. Genghis Khan killed his own dribble and then started a brand new one.
BAAAANG! Lana Rhoades sets the table and the pick-and-pop three goes down like somebody scripted it. Not close, not warm, not anywhere for LeBron James, straight into the hands of a defender who never had to leave his feet.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Philadelphia Injury-Report with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The military leader takes the baseline and bends an entire defense out of shape. Absolutely absurd stuff in this building tonight. Soft off the fingertips, the ball takes a full lap of the rim on Genghis Khan, and spits straight back out. That is theft.
LeBron James's complexion is grey. Goku's is red. Defeat comes in different colors. And here is the answer to our game Are You Smarter Than a Mailbox! Wanda Sue Beezley of Rooster Comb, South Dakota, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many keys are on a high school janitor keyring?' The answer was of course forty-one, and three of them open nothing at all. Wanda Sue takes home a paint-by-numbers kit of a barn, already painted wrong! I discovered tonight that my mic was off for three minutes. Three minutes of pure genius, lost forever. We're done for tonight. And now: 'Ancient Aliens: The True History of the Coffee Break.'
Matchday 5 — vs Phoenix No-Defense
109-92 (W)
Reverse it, make them slide all over again, that is how Lana Rhoades breaks a shell down. GONE down the baseline! LeBron James beat him on the first step and the paint is collapsing. Runner in the lane by LeBron James, high off the fingertips, straight down through the net. Splash!
Backing all the way to half court with three fingers held over each eye, LeBron James keeps the goggles on for the entire trip. The bench mob copies it in unison. The broadcast cuts to twelve grown men wearing invisible glasses. Peak television, honestly.
Ball moves. Lana Rhoades to Genghis Khan, on time and on target. Genghis Khan holds it, waits, waits some more, then lets it go at the last possible instant to Goku flying by. That is a half-second window and he threads it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Goku scooped that in from underneath the rim!
More second chance points for Phoenix No-Defense, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
No roll this time. Lana Rhoades swings it right back to Goku above the break, and it is PURE. A cruel spin-out for the farmer, and whatever that day job is, tonight it came with a brand new way to break your heart.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Phoenix No-Defense in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Break! LeBron James takes his jersey off before even reaching the locker room. Little scoop: LeBron James collects Pokemon cards. That Charizard is worth more than his first contract. And now, our halftime TV game show Guy Reads a Manual! To win a family-size tub of margarine autographed by a stranger, text HOOPS to 555-0345 and answer this question: 'How many people can hear a vending machine at three in the morning?' Back at it! The players jog toward center court.
That block was spectacular and completely illegal. LeBron James walks back to the huddle with his head down.
The tv host is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. The farmer pulls out the crossover of his life, and Monday morning he clocks in like nothing ever happened. Goku blows the wide open layup!
The tv host makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. Down screen, and Goku curls hard into the middle of the floor with a full step of daylight. Easy read. Goku probes to the right, pulls the string, and rises over a helpless closeout from twenty six feet. Splash.
Kisses the biceps, one and then the other, and Goku strolls to the free throw line like a man on vacation. Genghis Khan fans him with a rolled-up game program. The bench is in tears. Even the guy running the game clock is grinning into his monitor.
LeBron James gets it on the reversal and now this defense is rotating, scrambling and losing ground, all because Genghis Khan saw it a beat early. LeBron James turns the corner off the screen from Goku, the help never rotates, and the lane is WIDE open! Catching it right at the cup with nobody within eight feet, Goku goes up too strong and the ball rides high off the backboard.
STOP AND GO! Lana Rhoades hit the brakes, hit the gas, and the lane opened up like a garage door. The tv host hammers a brick off the backboard so hard the rim is still shaking. Nothing in that resume prepared anybody for this.
Read, screen, delivery, right on the money. A tv host making the right pass every single time, and the league is taking notes. That is the second illegal pick of the night from LeBron James, and possessions like that are how you lose a tight one.
Huddle is tight, marker squeaking on the board, and Genghis Khan is already nodding before the coach finishes the sentence. Sixty seconds in the huddle and LeBron James cashes it without a single wasted dribble. Textbook.
Lana Rhoades takes a bow for the crowd. Goku bows to Lana Rhoades. The nobility of basketball. And here is the answer to our game Guy Reads a Manual! Doris Ann Hoke of Butter Churn, New Hampshire, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many people can hear a vending machine at three in the morning?' The answer was of course everybody in the building, including the ones pretending to sleep. Doris Ann takes home a family-size tub of margarine autographed by a stranger! I drank so much coffee tonight I'm going to commentate in my sleep. Good night everyone! Up next: 'Worst Cooks in America: Boiling an Egg Without Breaking It.' Challenge accepted.
Matchday 6 — vs Los Angeles Nursing-Home
101-97 (W)
Straight down the baseline goes the philosopher! Whatever shift he worked this morning, he clearly left plenty in the tank. BANG is what Socrates was hearing in his head. Clang is what this building actually got.
Goku slides the hip out a full foot before contact. The official saw it, the arena saw it, everybody saw it.
Offensive foul on the military leader. He gets through an entire work week without a single collision and then does THIS on a basketball floor.
Dagger from Los Angeles Nursing-Home. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Clean feed from Socrates, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. The tv host just created his own space with a stepback. Somewhere a scout is spitting coffee all over his notepad. Rising up out of the corner, Lana Rhoades sends it LONG, clanging off the far side and out to the wing.
The players disappear. Lana Rhoades has a makeshift neck brace out of a towel. Fun fact: Lana Rhoades got rejected at a casting for a deodorant commercial. The irony. And now, our halftime TV game show Whammy Watch Live! To win a barrel of packing peanuts and absolutely nothing else, text HOOPS to 555-1073 and answer this question: 'How tall is the shortest player who ever dunked in a dream?' The players come back running. Did someone set the locker room on fire?
Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the tv host made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. The tv host had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Los Angeles Nursing-Home, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
There is nothing accidental about that one. Genghis Khan hunted the contact, sold it, and bought himself a trip to the stripe. AIRBALL. On a FREE THROW. Genghis Khan just invented a brand new way to be remembered.
Handoff, turn the corner, BUCKET! Lana Rhoades did all the dirty work on that one. Perfect drop-off from Genghis Khan, and Socrates answers with... whatever that was. Off the glass, off the rim, and gone. OFFENSIVE GLASS! LeBron James beats three men to the spot! That is pure want-to: LeBron James was the only man on the floor who decided that rebound belonged to him.
LeBron James deadpans directly into the broadcast camera: nod, wink, gone. Total elapsed time, one and a half seconds. The commentators lose it completely. Lana Rhoades arrives too late and mugs at an empty lens for nobody at all.
LeBron James sets up shop on the block, one thousand one, one thousand two, and the official counts him right out.
The tv host is out here running a pro offense with hand signals, not one hint of panic, and he clocks in somewhere else in the morning. Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the military leader made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. Straight through the traffic, straight through the contact. The military leader finishes with a free throw coming and the paint suddenly feels very small.
Look at that bench, not one man seated. Goku had this moment circled since the walkthrough, and the shot has not even gone up. Somebody explain how the farmer stays that calm with the whole season riding on one shot. You do not learn that anywhere on this planet!
Socrates does the floss while Goku spins like a top. LeBron James just stands there, arms crossed. Cool. And here is the answer to our game show Whammy Watch Live! Doris Ann Pickerel of Skunk Cabbage, Connecticut, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How tall is the shortest player who ever dunked in a dream?' The answer was of course five foot two, and the dream was extremely convincing. Doris Ann therefore wins a barrel of packing peanuts and absolutely nothing else! My evening? A microphone, cold coffee, and the greatest show on earth. What more could you ask for. That was beautiful. And now: 'House Hunters International: 90-Square-Foot Studio, Wall View.' A steal.
Matchday 7 — vs Toronto Border-Patrol
105-100 (W)
The referee tosses it high and LeBron James rises late, which is exactly how you win one of these. Timing over height, every single time.
Turnover, layup, Toronto Border-Patrol straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
The philosopher takes the baseline and bends an entire defense out of shape. Absolutely absurd stuff in this building tonight. Every highlight show in the country runs that clip tonight, and unfortunately for Socrates he is on the wrong end of it.
Dagger from Toronto Border-Patrol. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Lana Rhoades launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. Read, screen, delivery, right on the money. A farmer making the right pass every single time, and the league is taking notes. Getting to his spot and elevating, Socrates puts it on the back iron, up over the front, and out. Half a rotation from two points.
Halftime! Goku checks his stats on the board and winces. Did you know? Goku launched a basketball podcast. Two episodes. Zero listeners. Still going. And now, our halftime TV game show Fifty Fifty or Nothing! To win a decorative barometer that has read STORMY since 1998, text HOOPS to 555-0290 and answer this question: 'How many free throws could a horse make in one hour with no thumbs?' We're back! The coach drew stuff on the whiteboard, let's see if it works.
No hero ball here: Lana Rhoades takes what the defense gives and moves it along. Socrates feels the contact, spins off that shoulder, and the defender is left hugging a whole lot of nothing. Twenty-four seconds of standing around, and Socrates has to eat the last two of them. Possession wasted long before the shot went up.
Lana Rhoades walks it up, two fingers in the air, and the whole offense shifts on his command. Screen, roll, DELIVERY from Goku! Nothing but runway to the rim! OHHHH, what a read by Lana Rhoades! He never even glanced at the rim and it is CASH on the other end. There is no finesse in that, and there does not need to be. Socrates simply decided the paint belonged to him.
Socrates steps over the defender who ended up on the floor and keeps walking, never looks down. Cold as a meat locker. The building erupts twice, once for the bucket and once for the disrespect. The replay gets its own dedicated camera angle.
No block, no foul, just LeBron James being ENORMOUS in the lane, and that shot never had a chance.
They do not teach that in the tv host handbook, and yet here we are. Beautiful little exchange. OHHHH, that one died in the air! Genghis Khan put nothing into it and the front rim eats the floater. Another extra possession courtesy of the military leader, a man who evidently boxes out at work too. Some habits do not clock out. Genghis Khan crashes the glass, snatches that miss out of the air and hammers it home. Onions!
Goku does not love that call. Both hands in the air, a long look at the official, and the whistle still counts. Third whistle on Goku. He could argue the first two. This one he cannot.
A chair knocked flat, an assistant coach holding somebody back by the jersey, that whole row completely unhinged. That is the Lana Rhoades effect. The philosopher just jumped a passing lane like a ten-year pro and took it the distance. What a league this is!
Watch how they bury Socrates in the corner on the inbound. Nothing happens until he moves, and by then the defense is beaten. LeBron James takes the inbound, one dribble left, rises over the closeout, and the horn sounds while the net is still snapping. COUNT IT!
LeBron James pretends to check a watch that is not on his wrist, taps it, then shows it to the arena. Time is up. Socrates mimes an enormous yawn. The visiting coach is shouting at officials who have no jurisdiction over sarcasm.
Goku and Genghis Khan pretend to fish Socrates out of the crowd. They pull hard. And here is the answer to our game show Fifty Fifty or Nothing! Merle Bodkin of Dry Fork Holler, West Virginia, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'How many free throws could a horse make in one hour with no thumbs?' The answer was of course two, and both of them were technically goaltending. Merle therefore wins a decorative barometer that has read STORMY since 1998! Yours truly held it together all evening without a bathroom break. That's professionalism. That's all for today. Up next: 'Dateline: The True Cost of a Cup of Yogurt.' Deep investigation.
Matchday 8 — vs Minnesota Ice-Wall
92-113 (L)
Turnover, layup, Minnesota Ice-Wall straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
That is the second personal charged to Genghis Khan and the bench is already staring at the clipboard. Foul trouble rewrites a rotation in a hurry. The military leader is in foul trouble already! Whatever hands-on skills that job teaches, none of them are legal in this league.
LeBron James gets it on the reversal and now this defense is rotating, scrambling and losing ground, all because Genghis Khan saw it a beat early. Second pass beats the rotation, LeBron James to Socrates, and the closeout gets there about half a second too late. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Socrates rose up over the help and hammered it down on somebody's head!
Bucket for Minnesota Ice-Wall. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
Chest to chest, forearm legal, feet churning, LeBron James wins the battle for position before the move even begins. OUTLET! LeBron James rips the board and fires it ahead to Genghis Khan before anybody gets back! The military leader just spun through two defenders and reversed that in. Nothing about this is a normal Tuesday!
Genghis Khan slides on his knees down the free throw lane, arms wide, and ends up flat on his back watching his own replay on the video board. He points at himself on the screen. The officials have stopped pretending to have any control here.
Off to the locker room. Lana Rhoades has already drained two water bottles. Locker room intel: Lana Rhoades has a tattoo of a basketball hoop on her butt. That's commitment. And now, our halftime TV game show Second Chance Second Half! To win a hand painted mailbox shaped like a catfish, text HOOPS to 555-1006 and answer this question: 'What is the population of a town on the night of a rivalry game?' Second half! The hardwood is about to shake again.
Swing, swing, and Socrates finds Lana Rhoades on the wing before the help can even turn its head. Nobody dribbled, nobody isolated, Lana Rhoades and Goku just played basketball and the defense got shredded. Shot clock at one, and Lana Rhoades just has to throw something at the rim. Nothing doing.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Lana Rhoades threw it before the help even committed. LeBron James crosses, crosses back, the defender slides half a step the wrong way and the whole arena lets out the same OHHHH. Pull-up from the elbow by LeBron James, halfway down, spinning inside the iron, and it pops right back out.
Ball into LeBron James at the elbow, Socrates plants his foot and goes backdoor, and the pass meets him in the air. Filthy. Long and gone. Socrates floats the teardrop over everything and bangs it off the back iron.
Cross court, on a rope, from the philosopher. In this league that pass earns a contract, and he does it on his night off. A farmer breaking down a professional defender in front of a sold out house! Remember that day job, folks! The farmer tried the teardrop and never got it to the rim. Turns out soft touch does not come standard with that day job.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Minnesota Ice-Wall with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
The tv host just ran a give and go to perfection on national television! Somebody go tell his boss what he does after hours! That is the shot chart lying to you. Lana Rhoades did everything right on this possession and has zero points to show for it.
Dagger from Minnesota Ice-Wall. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Total control. Lana Rhoades has this thing on a string. Genghis Khan comes off the screen and the big man drops WAY back. Socrates just fades to the arc for the cleanest look of the night. Textbook footwork, textbook release from Socrates, cruel result as it spins out and both teams go up for a contested board.
Hold everything, they are going to the replay on Genghis Khan, and this building has stopped breathing. Freeze it right there: leather glued to the fingers of Genghis Khan, horn already screaming. No basket.
Socrates walks toward the tunnel without a word. Goku stares at the scoreboard as if it might change. And here is the answer to our game show Second Chance Second Half! Hoyt Pennington of Dishrag Springs, Oregon, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the population of a town on the night of a rivalry game?' The answer was of course the whole town plus forty people who moved away in 1987. Hoyt therefore wins a hand painted mailbox shaped like a catfish! Tonight my voice traveled three octaves. Baritone to soprano. Basketball does that to you. Off to bed! And now: 'Jeopardy: Cafeteria Trivia Edition.'
Matchday 9 — vs Houston Blast-Off
88-118 (L)
Ohhh no. Corner three, Houston Blast-Off in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Watch the spacing there, Socrates hits Lana Rhoades right in the shooting pocket and the possession stays alive. The tv host takes the baseline and bends an entire defense out of shape. Absolutely absurd stuff in this building tonight. A timeout is coming, because no defense recovers from watching Lana Rhoades do that to one of their own.
Ball up the floor, change of speed right at the logo, and Lana Rhoades already has the defense a full step behind. Not an inch to spare on the endline, but LeBron James keeps both feet in bounds and the help gets there a beat too late. That stepback is unguardable once the drive gets sold, and LeBron James has had that defender guessing wrong all night long.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Houston Blast-Off with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
The beauty of it is that Lana Rhoades never has to set a screen at all, the exchange IS the screen. Nightmare to guard. Down, up, and gone for Goku. The rim is just toying with him now.
The players head to the locker room. Genghis Khan is sweating like a racehorse. Physio's confession: Genghis Khan purrs when you massage his calves. Like a cat. A big cat. And now, our halftime TV game show Foul Line Confessions! To win a hood ornament from a truck that was never built, text HOOPS to 555-1098 and answer this question: 'Why does every gym in the country smell exactly the same?' Back on the hardwood. The tension has gone up a notch.
Cross court, on a rope, from the philosopher. In this league that pass earns a contract, and he does it on his night off. OHHHH the hesi! Goku froze him solid and he is already gone! Not a hand on him. Goku flat missed the bunny.
Lana Rhoades rides the ball handler all the way up the floor and finally puts a forearm in his back. Officials blow it dead. Nothing but trouble ahead for Lana Rhoades. Third foul, and this crew is calling it tight on both ends of the floor.
More second chance points for Houston Blast-Off, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
From WAY downtown off the pop! Lana Rhoades with the extra pass and CASH. Blocked into the floor. LeBron James will be seeing that one in his sleep.
SPIN and GO! Lana Rhoades pirouettes right through the traffic and comes out the other side clean! OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the tv host! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Bucket for Houston Blast-Off. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
One little shoulder dip from Genghis Khan and the guy guarding him turned into a traffic cone in real time. Somewhere an assistant coach is throwing a clipboard, because the military leader baited that closeout from deep like a decade of film study went into it.
That is the pass nobody puts on a highlight reel, and Genghis Khan makes it every single trip down the floor. Two defenders collide on the handoff and Socrates is gone, so LeBron James earned that one even if the box score disagrees. Watch the feet on Socrates there, still drifting sideways at the release, and that is exactly why the floater sails wide left of everything.
Both coaches are up off the bench pleading while the officials walk the Socrates sequence back frame by frame. Cold, clinical, and correct. That monitor just took everything from Socrates.
Socrates and Genghis Khan share a single look. Just one. It contains all the disappointment in the world. And here is the answer to our game show Foul Line Confessions! Wendell Crabtree of Lost Mitten, Colorado, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Why does every gym in the country smell exactly the same?' The answer was of course floor wax, popcorn, and forty years of accumulated nervousness. Wendell therefore wins a hood ornament from a truck that was never built! While you were watching the game, I was desperately searching for my pen. Still haven't found it. We're done here. Up next: 'Top Chef: Microwave Edition.' Bon appetit.
Matchday 10 — vs Denver Horse-Track
93-132 (L)
Tip is UP and Goku gets there first! We are underway and it is our ball.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, Denver Horse-Track, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Socrates kicks it over to Genghis Khan, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. Off the pin-down comes the military leader with nobody inside a zip code. Somebody out there knows how to use a screen, and it is not who you would guess. Day job, then this: the military leader reads a rolling big like a coach with twenty years on the bench. The tv host just dropped a teardrop over a seven footer. Soft hands must run in that trade!
The too-small gesture, aimed straight at the Denver Horse-Track bench, both hands measuring an inch of air. Their coach is out of his chair and onto the officials. Lana Rhoades keeps the pose, unblinking, backpedaling all the way. The arena hits a decibel level that clips the broadcast mics.
Dagger from Denver Horse-Track. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Somebody explain how the tv host reads a defense faster than half this league. Whatever he does all day, it clearly involves thinking three steps ahead. Here comes Socrates sprinting off the elbow. Goku slides it into his pocket and that chase defender is buried. Perfect arc. Socrates makes seven feet of rim protection completely irrelevant.
Coach calls everyone back. Socrates drags his feet toward the tunnel. Bus driver's confession: Socrates raps gibberish during road trips. Loudly. And now, our halftime TV game show Name That Smell! To win a barbecue apron that reads KISS THE FORKLIFT OPERATOR, text HOOPS to 555-0357 and answer this question: 'Which is heavier, a pound of orange slices or a pound of team spirit?' Back to hostilities. Faces have changed in the locker room.
Clean feed from Genghis Khan, nothing forced, just the offense breathing. Goku gives it up to LeBron James on the move, the built-in screen erases the chase, and there is a clean runway to the rim. The big man never even contested it, and LeBron James still could not get the runner to drop. That one is on him.
Filthy. Absolutely filthy from Lana Rhoades, and the defender knows exactly what just happened to him. The tv host just traveled so obviously the referee did not even need a second look. Stick to the day job, my guy.
The tv host just froze a grown professional with a hesitation dribble. This man punches a clock and he is out here doing THAT. Fifth possession this half where Lana Rhoades has been left to bail everybody out with the clock at zero. He cannot keep doing this alone.
Cold blooded from Denver Horse-Track, way out beyond the arc, and our defense is scrambling in rotation.
Unsportsmanlike foul on LeBron James, and this one costs double. Not one hand went for the basketball, just a forearm through the chest of LeBron James. That is the textbook definition of unnecessary contact.
More second chance points for Denver Horse-Track, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
The ball travels faster than five defenders can, and Socrates has known that all night long. That crossover was not about getting a shot up. Lana Rhoades pulled it out to tell everybody in the gym whose possession this is. Rim out for Lana Rhoades, the crowd came up and sat right back down, and you can hear the groan from every corner of the arena.
Bucket for Denver Horse-Track. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
Watch the spacing, Lana Rhoades drags two bodies toward the ball and Goku is standing alone behind the line. Geometry, not luck. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Two points in every gym in America except this one, and Goku is walking back with both hands on his head.
Arm across the body, whistle, dead ball. Reach on LeBron James. OHHHH the whistle! Number five on LeBron James, and this bench cannot believe what it just saw.
Socrates looks like someone who hasn't slept in three days. Lana Rhoades looks like someone who won't sleep tonight. And here is the answer to our game Name That Smell! Odell Trippett of Broke Axle, Alaska, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'Which is heavier, a pound of orange slices or a pound of team spirit?' The answer was of course the orange slices, and it is not close. Odell takes home a barbecue apron that reads KISS THE FORKLIFT OPERATOR! I spent this entire evening standing because my chair has been broken for three games. Nobody fixes it. Off to bed! And now: 'Jeopardy: Cafeteria Trivia Edition.'
Matchday 11 — vs New York Over-Timers
76-114 (L)
You want basketball IQ? Ask the tv host, who just moved the rock on time without one wasted dribble. Baseline spin from LeBron James at full speed, and his man never even gets a hand into the picture. Filthy stuff. Buzzer on the shot clock, LeBron James heaves it off one leg, and the ball comes up short of everything.
Dagger from New York Over-Timers. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Dribble handoff from Lana Rhoades, and the defender gets wiped out on the exchange! Jab, jab, STEPBACK. Goku snatched his ankles and let it go clean.
The military leader just ran a give and go to perfection on national television! Somebody go tell his boss what he does after hours! Nobody expects touch like that from the military leader, but that floater had more feel than half the starting guards in the league.
Three fingers up, walking backward the length of the floor, Genghis Khan never once looks at the basket he just drained. The bench mob is off the seats, towels overhead, security waving them back down. Nobody sits. Nobody in here is going to sit again tonight.
Nobody boxed out. Tip in, New York Over-Timers, and two of ours were standing right there watching it happen.
Halftime whistle. Lana Rhoades has dried blood on her elbow but plays tough. Fun fact: Lana Rhoades blocked a shot in the finals... And dislocated a thumb celebrating. Classic. And now, our halftime TV game show Bowling for Bologna! To win a set of hubcaps for a car that nobody makes anymore, text HOOPS to 555-0204 and answer this question: 'How many buttons on a scoreboard controller actually do anything?' Here they come. You can read the determination on their faces.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Lana Rhoades spun out of a double team like it was a revolving door! That is a dime from LeBron James that deserved so much better, and Lana Rhoades knows it, head down, jogging back before the ball even lands.
Eight seconds off the shot clock and Lana Rhoades has not wasted one of them, the ball reaching LeBron James precisely where the play wanted it. Working him at the top of the key, low dribble, low dribble, then LeBron James rips it across and his man lunges at a ghost. Lana Rhoades threads a BEAUTY to LeBron James under the rim and... he lays it off the bottom of the iron! Ohhhh, no.
Punish the help, that is the rule, and Genghis Khan just did it by hitting Goku on the back side with acres of room. That is a self-created look of the highest order, and there might be five guys in this league who get to it on demand the way Goku does. No touch. Goku left the soft hands in the locker room tonight.
New York Over-Timers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Lana Rhoades kicks it over to LeBron James, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. OHHHH the pin-down! LeBron James pops out clean while the defender is STILL tangled up with Lana Rhoades. Brutal. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was IN for LeBron James!
Turnover, layup, New York Over-Timers straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Court vision like that on the military leader is absurd. Whatever the day job pays him, the assist numbers say he is badly underpriced. That is the shot LeBron James wants every trip down the floor, it drops nine nights out of ten, and tonight is the tenth.
Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the military leader made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. Straight back to the office for the military leader, and the group chat has already seen it twice.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. New York Over-Timers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
Goku pushes it in transition, pulls up from the elbow, cash. That is a 10-0 run and the visitors have not scored in three minutes.
LeBron James sighs so loudly that the reporters hear it. Goku winces. And here is the answer to our game Bowling for Bologna! Faye Ellen Duckworth of Sweat Bee, Connecticut, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many buttons on a scoreboard controller actually do anything?' The answer was of course two, and the rest are there for confidence. Faye Ellen takes home a set of hubcaps for a car that nobody makes anymore! During the game, my colleague ordered sushi. It arrived at the final buzzer. Perfect timing. That's a wrap for tonight. Coming up: 'The Amazing Race: Subway Line 13.' Viewer discretion advised.
Matchday 12 — vs Cleveland Twin-Towers
96-109 (L)
The beauty of it is that Lana Rhoades never has to set a screen at all, the exchange IS the screen. Nightmare to guard. DOUBLE DRIBBLE! Goku picked it up, put it back down, and the whistle went off like a smoke alarm.
You can teach the jumper, you cannot teach the willingness, and Lana Rhoades gives up a decent shot every single time a better one exists. Third one of these from LeBron James this quarter, third time the arc is wrong. The lane is not open real estate anymore.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Cleveland Twin-Towers with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
Watch the arms on LeBron James, straight up, no arm bar, nothing for the officials to blow. That is coaching and discipline.
Ohhh no. Corner three, Cleveland Twin-Towers in rhythm now, and our side of the building goes silent.
Coach calls everyone back. Genghis Khan drags his feet toward the tunnel. Intel: Genghis Khan once called an imaginary timeout in the middle of a game. The ref actually hesitated. And now, our halftime TV game show The Big Spin Cycle! To win a toaster that only toasts one side of the bread, text HOOPS to 555-1057 and answer this question: 'What is the resale value of a game worn wristband?' Back on the court. The coach changed the starting five, that'll be a surprise.
The philosopher makes the simple read look automatic. Clock out of work, clock in for clean basketball decisions. The military leader just ran that two-man game like he has a decade of film on it. Somebody get this man a contract. Rising into two defenders, LeBron James launches a jumper that finds nothing but backboard and bad decisions.
Read, screen, delivery, right on the money. A tv host making the right pass every single time, and the league is taking notes. The farmer had two points in the bank and the iron took them right back out. You do not get heartbreak like that in the day job.
Goku just took a shoulder to the chest to buy Genghis Khan half a second, and half a second in this league is an eternity. Lana Rhoades threads a BEAUTY to Genghis Khan under the rim and... he lays it off the bottom of the iron! Ohhhh, no. The military leader outworked everybody on the glass! Effort does not care what is printed on your business card. Rebounding is effort, and effort is apparently what the military leader does for a living. Second chance points, all guts.
Genghis Khan deadpans directly into the broadcast camera: nod, wink, gone. Total elapsed time, one and a half seconds. The commentators lose it completely. LeBron James arrives too late and mugs at an empty lens for nobody at all.
Socrates kicks it over to LeBron James, no dribble, no drama, and this offense settles into a rhythm. Bodies everywhere in the paint and it does not matter one bit to LeBron James, one spin and the ball never leaves the string. LeBron James gets into the paint, sees the shot blocker rising, and simply lifts it over the top of him. Never had a prayer.
Stone silence for one second, then LeBron James lets out something that is not really a word, more a sound from the basement of a human being. Goku answers with the same noise. The arena joins in. There is no language left in this building.
Cleveland Twin-Towers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Four in a row for Socrates, so naturally he pulls up from the parking lot. Iron.
Dagger from Cleveland Twin-Towers. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
This is the work that never shows up on a stat sheet, Genghis Khan gets the credit and the guy setting the screen gets the bruise. The military leader gets it handed over on a silver platter at point blank range and drops it. Somewhere in this building a coach is questioning every decision that led here.
The farmer is parked under the rim while three grown men in stripes squint at a screen. Just another day at the office, apparently. No good! The ball is STILL sitting in the hand of Goku when that light comes on. Waved off.
Goku's eyes are red, jaw tight. Socrates apologizes to the coach, voice cracking. And here is the answer to our game show The Big Spin Cycle! Virgil Stanback of Buzzard Roost Landing, North Dakota, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'What is the resale value of a game worn wristband?' The answer was of course two dollars and a firm handshake. Virgil therefore wins a toaster that only toasts one side of the bread! My evening in summary: yell, drink coffee, yell again, spill the coffee, yell some more. Good evening! Coming up: 'Dancing with the Stars: My Cousin's Wedding Edition.' Open bar.
Matchday 13 — vs Boston Ring-Chasers
95-116 (L)
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Boston Ring-Chasers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
OHHHH the pocket pass! Lana Rhoades splits the coverage and the roll man is loose under the basket! Straight up the elevator shaft! LeBron James goes and gets it above the square, and this building is shaking.
Slow walk, no expression. LeBron James backpedals past the Boston Ring-Chasers huddle close enough to hear what is being said and never turns his head. The crowd noise is a physical object at this point. One of their assistants stands up, and nothing comes of it.
Bucket for Boston Ring-Chasers. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
The defender planted his feet, and Genghis Khan said thank you very much and drove straight through his front pocket. Pull-up from the elbow by Genghis Khan, halfway down, spinning inside the iron, and it pops right back out.
The military leader just threaded a pocket pass through two defenders. Where exactly did that vision come from? The filthy euro-step in traffic was the idea, but the feet got greedy and the whistle blew Goku dead.
The players disappear into the tunnel. Socrates asks for an ice pack. The staff told me Socrates sings in the shower. Badly. Very badly. And now, our halftime TV game show Jeopardy Adjacent! To win a bucket of concrete turtles from a roadside stand that closed in 2004, text HOOPS to 555-0208 and answer this question: 'Which state has the most rectangular gymnasiums per capita?' Both teams emerge from the tunnel. The second half can begin.
The tv host just moved an entire defense with one flick of the wrist. Somebody check that resume again. Unselfish basketball. Socrates passes up a good shot and hands LeBron James a GREAT one. The crowd has found its chant, and LeBron James is going to be hearing it all night.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for Boston Ring-Chasers with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
One hard step and Genghis Khan owns that whole side of the floor, which means the low man has to make a decision he does not want. You are about to see a coach put his entire face in both hands, and Genghis Khan has earned every second of that reaction.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Lana Rhoades threw it before the help even committed. The farmer reads the screen perfectly, comes off shoulder to shoulder, and buys himself an open look. Veteran movement, rookie resume. Stuck holding it as the clock bleeds out, Goku fades away from twenty-six feet, and it is not close.
The military leader just created his own space with a stepback. Somewhere a scout is spitting coffee all over his notepad. Stonewalled at the top of the square! The big man meets Genghis Khan up there and returns it with interest.
The extra pass! Socrates had the look, gave it up anyway, and Goku buries it. BANG! OHHHH! Goku went up looking for a poster and came back down as the punchline.
Boston Ring-Chasers again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
Screened, toasted, done. Genghis Khan is loose and the defense is scrambling to find him. Onions! Genghis Khan did that with a hand in his face.
Goku hacks the arm on purpose, then throws both hands up like he has never touched a soul in his life. Nobody is buying it.
Goku lets out a big exhale walking through the door. Socrates holds his in. And here is the answer to our game show Jeopardy Adjacent! Wanda Jean Stubblefield of Possum Grape, Alabama, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Which state has the most rectangular gymnasiums per capita?' The answer was of course Indiana, and it is not particularly close. Wanda Jean therefore wins a bucket of concrete turtles from a roadside stand that closed in 2004! Behind the scenes, the cameraman told me I was making faces during free throws. I had no idea. Good night everyone! Coming up: 'Boot Camp: Supermarket Checkout Line Edition.' Discipline.
Matchday 14 — vs San Antonio Skyscrapers
77-121 (L)
The farmer just out-jumped a guy half a foot taller for the opening tip. Somebody check the day job again.
Bucket for San Antonio Skyscrapers. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
No play on the ball whatsoever. LeBron James took the man down from behind and hoped the crew was feeling generous. They were not. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! LeBron James is flat on the floor, the crowd is howling, and the call comes back flagrant. Two shots and the ball.
And there it is, a walk-in layup for San Antonio Skyscrapers with not one hand raised in the paint. Somebody has to protect that rim.
Whirl, and GONE! Lana Rhoades leaves the defender grabbing at a jersey that stopped being there half a second ago. The tv host gets it handed over on a silver platter at point blank range and drops it. Somewhere in this building a coach is questioning every decision that led here.
Break! Socrates grabs an ice bag and slaps it on his knee. I've been told Socrates always puts his left shoe on first. The one day he switched, gave up 40 points. And now, our halftime TV game show The Weakest Ankle! To win a laminated placemat showing every single county in Nebraska, text HOOPS to 555-0212 and answer this question: 'How many minutes are in a halftime that feels like forever?' The hardwood awaits. Here we go for the second half.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. San Antonio Skyscrapers with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
That is the pass that beats a zone, and Socrates threw it before the help even committed. A single dribble is all Genghis Khan needed to get downhill, and the back side of that defense is in complete disarray. Two on the shot clock and the ball ends up with the military leader, which is how you get a twenty-eight footer off the wrong foot.
Personal foul on the philosopher. Somewhere a shift is going uncovered and not one soul in this arena cares. Socrates pulls the towel over his head before he even sits down, and you can read the frustration from the upper deck.
More second chance points for San Antonio Skyscrapers, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
You could hear the whole building groan, and Genghis Khan knew it the second the ball left his fingers, already jogging back on defense.
Dagger from San Antonio Skyscrapers. You could hear the air leave this arena on that one.
Watch the change of pace from Genghis Khan, half speed into full speed in one step, and that is a blow-by every time. Two defenders in the lane, Genghis Khan splits them, double clutches and kisses it off the square. Count it!
Wiping imaginary dust off both shoulders, Genghis Khan strolls back on defense at the speed of a man walking his dog. LeBron James carries the bit further and mimes brushing off his shoes. The bench is on the floor. The head coach is not laughing, but only barely.
Set called, Socrates waved out to the corner, and Lana Rhoades watches the spacing open up like a front door. Enough room out there to set up a lawn chair, and the philosopher made it himself. Total professional, in a completely unrelated profession. Rises, releases, and Socrates sends the ball through the exact patch of sky where the rim is not.
Lana Rhoades launches it weak side, one pass, and the whole shell has to sprint. Good luck with that. Socrates attacks the baseline and the ENTIRE defense has to rotate behind him! Catch on the block, shoulder into the chest, one dribble, and Socrates finishes over the top. Textbook.
The strategy of the desperate, executed to perfection by Genghis Khan. Foul, stop the clock, pray at the other end, repeat.
LeBron James lets out a nervous laugh that sends chills down your spine. Genghis Khan decides not to comment. And here is the answer to our game The Weakest Ankle! Delbert Yoakum of Cold Biscuit, Missouri, got it right. The question, let me remind you, was 'How many minutes are in a halftime that feels like forever?' The answer was of course fifteen, though eleven of those are purely spiritual. Delbert takes home a laminated placemat showing every single county in Nebraska! I spent the evening explaining basketball rules to my new intern. He still thinks you can walk with the ball. See you tomorrow! Up next: 'Extreme Reading: The Terms and Conditions.' 4-hour special.
Matchday 15 — vs Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest
82-127 (L)
Here is the part that never makes the highlight package: Lana Rhoades controlling tempo, burning clock, hunting the mismatch the second one shows up. Hard drive, hard stop, and Socrates retreats into an ocean of open hardwood. The philosopher had that thing halfway down and the rim spat it back out. Nobody ever warns you that the iron has a personality.
Lana Rhoades walks it up, two fingers in the air, and the whole offense shifts on his command. Full stop, full sprint, and the philosopher is in the paint! Nobody back at the workplace is going to believe this one. Nobody moved, nobody cut, nobody set a screen, so Socrates launches a contested jumper with the horn already going. Ugly offense.
Bucket for Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest. Wide open look, and nobody even ran at the shooter.
You judge a locker room by moments like this. Genghis Khan makes the play, and every man on that sideline erupts right along with him. The chasedown is the hardest hustle play in this sport, and Genghis Khan just made it look routine.
Reverse it, make them slide all over again, that is how Genghis Khan breaks a shell down. Genghis Khan sets it and slides out instead of rolling, LeBron James finds him late, and the defense pays for cheating under the screen. The military leader launched one from the logo as the horn sounded. In fairness, nobody in that huddle gave him a better option.
Halftime whistle! LeBron James grabs a towel and collapses on the bench. Fun fact: LeBron James failed the driving test three times. On the court it's a different story, thankfully. And now, our halftime TV game show Match Game Winding Down! To win a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it, text HOOPS to 555-0509 and answer this question: 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' Let's go, we're back. The crowd claps in rhythm.
Count it and the foul. Brutal. Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest with a three point play and a gut punch in the same possession.
LeBron James rises up and REJECTS the layup off the glass, and now he is barking at the whole building about it. That outlet from LeBron James is a weapon, it turns a defensive stop into two points in about three seconds. That is body control you simply cannot coach: Goku stays up a full beat longer than everybody else and finishes clean.
The tv host just froze a grown professional with a hesitation dribble. This man punches a clock and he is out here doing THAT. Stuck out on the perimeter with no outlet, Lana Rhoades panics, re-dribbles, and hands the possession over on a silver platter.
The confidence is sky high, the shot selection has left the building, and Lana Rhoades just threw a brick from twenty-nine feet.
Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest again, and again nobody is home. Three straight trips down the floor with zero resistance.
The military leader takes the baseline and bends an entire defense out of shape. Absolutely absurd stuff in this building tonight. OHHHH, the cylinder rejects the military leader! Somewhere a whole workplace just yelled at a television.
Turnover, layup, Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest straight through us in transition. Careless basketball.
Total control. Lana Rhoades has this thing on a string. Socrates splits the coverage with a bounce pass you need slow motion to appreciate. Dimes. You can hear that rim ringing from up here, Goku has forced three in a row now and the whole offense has stopped moving.
More second chance points for Oklahoma City Treasure-Chest, and our bench is up screaming for a timeout. Rightly so.
Hesitate, GO. Genghis Khan is by that hip before the man even blinks. That is a throwback bucket: Genghis Khan with his back to the basket, and the defense has absolutely no answer for it.
Lana Rhoades pulls her cap down over her eyes. Genghis Khan doesn't have a cap, and it shows. And here is the answer to our game show Match Game Winding Down! Georgette Blalock of Little Persimmon, North Carolina, got it right. The question, I remind you, was 'Which came first, the backboard or the regret?' The answer was of course the regret, by about eleven minutes. Georgette therefore wins a souvenir shot glass from a state park with no water in it! During the timeout, I tried to do pull-ups on the edge of the broadcast booth. Zero. That's a wrap! And now, the network's masterpiece: 'My Cat, My Battle.' Don't miss the finale.
My Team finishes #12 (5W-10L). Better luck next season! MVP: LeBron James.
