XV

From loosehead to fullback, draft your fifteen in green and gold.

TeamBranch reproduces the official structure of a rugby union XV: 8 forwards (the pack), 7 backs (the line), a captain, a tactical formation. Fifteen positions, fifteen calls, from number 1 to number 15.

Draft from the current Wallabies (Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Will Skelton, Rob Valetini, Tate McDermott, Tom Wright), the green-and-gold immortals (David Campese, John Eales, George Gregan, Stephen Larkham, Tim Horan), the stars of Super Rugby Pacific and the Shute Shield, or pick from the All Blacks, Springboks, Pumas, Six Nations. You can also build a side made entirely of mates for the Saturday club run.

The Green & Gold Times · special Wallabies edition
N° 117 · 1899-2026

A hundred and twenty-seven years of Wallabies, a hundred and twenty-seven ways to imagine them.

From the first Test against the British Isles at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 24 June 1899 to the heartbreak of Saint-Étienne on 17 September 2023, the men in green and gold have been one of world rugby's great theatres: 2 World Cups won, 2 finals lost on the biggest stages, the longest losing run in the Bledisloe and the cross-code blockbusters that keep changing the script. On TeamBranch you can replay every generation — or rewrite the finals that got away.

1899 → 1980 · The amateur years

From the SCG to Mark Ella

The first Test was played on a cricket pitch on a Sydney winter's afternoon in 1899. For the next eight decades, Australian rugby grew under the radar — the "Wallabies" tag was coined in 1908 on tour in Britain. The famous 1949 "Battle of Brisbane" series win, the 1958-66 Springboks battles, the slow build of a national identity.

Then Mark Ella, the original 10. The 1984 Grand Slam tour of the UK with brothers Glen and Gary in the same side, Andrew Slack as captain — beating England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. The first sign that Australia could play the game on its own terms: flair, hands, attacking lines. The era's other names: Roger Gould, Simon Poidevin, Nick Farr-Jones, Michael Lynagh, David Campese emerging.

1991 → 2003 · The Eales-Gregan reign

Two stars, one home final lost

The first golden era: 1991 at Twickenham, Bob Dwyer's side beat England 12–6, Campese tipped the trophy, Nick Farr-Jones lifted it. The Wallabies were world champions. The 1995 RWC quarter-final exit to England (Rob Andrew drop) hurt. Rod Macqueen's 1999 side then crushed France 35–12 in Cardiff — Stephen Larkham's drop in the semi vs South Africa, Matt Burke's 25 points in the final.

Then the home final, 22 November 2003, Stadium Australia, 82,957 fans, the loudest Wallabies night. 17–17 at full time. Extra time. Jonny Wilkinson's drop in the 100th minute. 17–20. The heartbreak that still hurts. George Gregan's "four more years boys" sledge at the All Blacks in the semi remains an Aussie sporting line.

2015 → 2026 · Cheika to Schmidt

The 2015 final, the nadir, the rebuild

Michael Cheika's 2015 side, with Michael Hooper, David Pocock, Israel Folau and Bernard Foley, fought to Twickenham — lost 17–34 to the All Blacks. Then the long slide: the Folau social-media crisis, the Cheika exit, Eddie Jones' return in 2023 and the disaster — pool-stage exit, lost to Fiji 15–22, the worst Wallabies result in 109 years.

2024: enter Joe Schmidt, the Kiwi tactician who built Ireland's golden era. Signed for the RWC 2027 cycle. Cross-code megastar Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii arrives from rugby league on a $5M deal. Will Skelton captain, Rob Valetini Wallaby of the Year, the 2025 Lions tour as the proving ground. The Wallabies are dangerous again — and the World Cup comes home.

Architecture of the XV

How is a rugby union team built?

A rugby XV runs out with 15 starters and 8 reserves: the pack and the line, the forwards and the backs. Each jersey number maps to a specific role. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar for your lineup, one to fifteen.

The pack (1 to 8) is about set-piece and contact: scrums, lineouts, mauls, rucks. The backs (9 to 15) are about movement: handling, territory, running lines, finishing. All of it under a captain, who can wear any number.

Front row · 1, 2, 3
Loosehead, hooker, tighthead. The foundation: scrum and lineout. Raw power: James Slipper, Matt Faessler, Taniela "Tongan Thor" Tupou.
Locks · 4, 5
The lineout towers. Jumpers, mauling, big hits. Will Skelton (the giant, La Rochelle), Nick Frost, Jeremy Williams.
Loose forwards · 6, 7, 8
The flankers and the No. 8. Versatility, breakdown, jackalling. Rob Valetini at 8 (Wallaby of the Year 2024), Fraser McReight at openside, Tom Hooper.
Halves · 9, 10
The brains: halfback (Tate McDermott, Nic White) and fly-half (Tom Lynagh, Carter Gordon, Noah Lolesio). Vision, pass, kick.
Midfield · 12, 13
The inside centre distributes, the outside centre hits the line. Hunter Paisami, Len Ikitau, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. The attacking line that breaks defences.
Back three · 11, 14, 15
Left wing, right wing, fullback. Pure pace, aerial work, finishing. Tom Wright, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Andy Muirhead, Filipo Daugunu.
Aussie rugby lexicon

The words to know to talk rugby like a Suncorp regular.

Try
The supreme act: ground the ball over the opposition try line. Worth 5 points, plus 2 for the conversion. Campese scored 64 of them in 101 Tests — the Goose, the original Aussie genius.
Scrum
The iconic set piece: 8 vs 8, hooker in the middle, props either side, locks behind. Engagement on the halfback's feed. The Boks-Wallabies scrum battles still hurt.
Lineout
Restart after the ball goes into touch: an alignment of jumpers, the hooker throws, locks get lifted. Eales used to kick the conversions from here — "Nobody" could do everything.
Ruck & maul
Two contact phases after a tackle: ruck = ball on the ground, you clear; maul = ball-carrier upright, you drive. The Boks love a maul, the Wallabies live for the counter-attack and the offload.
Drop goal & penalty
The drop (3 pts) is kicked in open play, ball must bounce first. The penalty (3 pts) punishes a foul. Larkham's drop in the 1999 RWC semi vs South Africa in extra time is in the national folklore. Wilkinson's 2003 drop is the one we'd rather forget.
Offside & knock-on
Offside = ahead of the ball-carrier. Knock-on = ball spilled forward. The two basic mistakes that end a phase.
Tackle
The defensive weapon. Choke tackle, chop tackle, shoulder hit, high tackle (penalty, red card). Sam Cane's red in the 2023 final cost the All Blacks the trophy.
Step & offload
The Australian art. Beat your man with the step, then offload before the deck. Campese's goosestep is the founding move. Larkham, Lote Tuqiri, Israel Folau, now Suaalii — the Aussie tradition of running rugby.
Bledisloe Cup
The trans-Tasman trophy contested between Australia and New Zealand every year since 1931. Australia held it 1992-1997 and 1998-2002. Hasn't been in Aussie hands since 2002. 24 years and counting.

Frequently asked

The classics on building your dream XV.

The most-googled questions and the ones most asked in our inbox.

How do I build my dream Wallabies XV online?
Pick a tactical formation (classic, attacking, defensive, kicking game), then fill all 15 positions from 1 to 15 by drafting from 12,000 players: current Wallabies, legends, Super Rugby Pacific stars, international icons, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up required, 100% free.
How is a rugby union XV officially built?
A rugby XV is made of 8 forwards (1 loosehead prop, 2 hooker, 3 tighthead prop, 4 and 5 locks, 6 and 7 flankers, 8 number eight) and 7 backs (9 halfback, 10 fly-half, 11 left wing, 12 inside centre, 13 outside centre, 14 right wing, 15 fullback). Plus 8 reserves on the bench. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar exactly.
Can I build a squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup hosted in Australia?
Yes — and this is the home tournament. RWC 2027 kicks off in Perth on 1 October and finishes at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 13 November, expanded to 24 teams. Five venues: Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne. You can draft multiple hypotheses: Schmidt's current lineup, the Suaalii-led backline, post-Super Rugby blooded XV, all-time Wallabies, the legends XV. Editable and shareable, update it before every Test.
Can I create a team with my mates or the family?
Course you can. 800,000 custom XVs have already been built. Upload photos of your mates, your old man, your sister, your cousin, your club coach, your Saturday morning Shute Shield side, and slot them into any position. Fair dinkum perfect for the club final, the work team-build, the buck's weekend, or just a WhatsApp group sledge.
What about the Wallaroos?
Women's rugby is integrated 100%. Build the Wallaroos with Maya Stewart, Eva Karpani, Pia Tapsell, Charlotte Caslick (the sevens crossover megastar, Olympic gold 2016 + Paris 2024) — the side rebuilding under a new program with home RWC 2029 already on the horizon. The Aussie 7s women took bronze in Paris 2024 and remain a global force.
Which club competitions are covered?
Super Rugby Pacific (all 4 Australian franchises: Brumbies, Waratahs, Reds, Western Force — plus the late lamented Melbourne Rebels, plus Moana Pasifika, Drua, NZ teams), the Shute Shield (Sydney's premier comp, oldest in the world outside Britain), the Hospitals Cup (Brisbane club rugby), the Dewar Shield (Victoria), plus France's Top 14, England's Premiership and the URC. More than 800 club cards in total.
What tactical formations does TeamBranch support?
Four: Classic (balanced), Attacking (loose forwards, fast wingers, ball-in-hand — the Campese school), Defensive (heavy pack, tactical halfback, kicking game — the Eddie Jones 2003 style), Kicking Game (territory rugby, dominant fly-half, box kicks). You can switch at any time and your XV reorganises automatically on the interactive field.
What's the difference between rugby union XV and rugby league?
Two different codes that share an island. Rugby union (15 players, 80 minutes in 2 halves, rucks, mauls, lineouts, the Wallabies, the World Cup) is the global game. Rugby league (13 players, 6-tackle sets, simpler ruck, the NRL, State of Origin) is the dominant winter code in NSW and QLD. The Suaalii crossover is the headline story — and you can also build sevens XVs on TeamBranch from autumn 2026.
Why have the Wallabies only won two World Cups and lost two finals?
Two titles (1991 at Twickenham 12–6 vs England, 1999 in Cardiff 35–12 vs France) and two heartbreaks. The 2003 final at home in Sydney still stings — 17–20 in extra time, Jonny Wilkinson's drop in the 100th minute, in front of 82,957 at Stadium Australia. The 2015 final at Twickenham was a 17–34 mugging by the All Blacks. Add the 2023 pool exit under Eddie Jones (the lowest moment in 109 years, lost to Fiji 15–22, Wales beat us) and you've got the full Australian rugby roller-coaster. 2027 at home is the comeback story Schmidt is writing.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exception. Composition, sharing, exports, custom card uploads, tactical simulation: everything is free. No sign-up required, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Build as many XVs as you want.
Does TeamBranch exist for other rugby nations?
Yes, 96 local editions including New Zealand (All Blacks), France (Les Bleus), South Africa (Springboks), Ireland (Men in Green), England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Argentina (Los Pumas), Fiji, Japan (Brave Blossoms). Each edition has its own player database and local terminology.
