A century and a quarter of Australian Cabinets, and as many ways to staff them.

Since Federation on 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth has known thirty-one Prime Ministers and several hundred Cabinet Ministers. Every Ministry tells an era, a doctrine, a crisis. On TeamBranch, you can replay them — or rewrite them.

1941 → 1945 · Curtin

The Curtin war

John Curtin takes Labor to power weeks before Pearl Harbor. With Ben Chifley at the Treasury and H. V. Evatt at External Affairs, he pivots Australia from London to Washington with his famous 1941 declaration: "Australia looks to America."

Curtin recalls Australian troops from the Middle East to defend the homeland, accepts US command in the South-West Pacific, and dies in office in July 1945 — three weeks before VJ Day. Chifley succeeds him and steers post-war reconstruction.

1983 → 1996 · Hawke / Keating

The reform years

Thirteen years of Labor government. Bob Hawke (eight years, four elections) then Paul Keating (five years, the 1993 "true believers" win). Floating the dollar, financial deregulation, the Prices and Incomes Accord, Medicare, compulsory superannuation, native title (Mabo 1992, Wik 1996).

Keating reframes Australia as an Asia-Pacific country — APEC, the engagement with Indonesia, the Redfern Speech. He loses in 1996 to John Howard, opening eleven and a half years of Coalition government.

2022 → 2026 · Albanese

The Albanese years

Anthony Albanese ends nine years of Coalition rule in May 2022 and is re-elected in May 2025. Jim Chalmers at Treasury, Penny Wong at Foreign Affairs, Richard Marles as Deputy PM. AUKUS, Voice referendum 2023, cost-of-living, energy transition, the housing crisis.

The Albanese ministry is the first majority Labor government since Rudd 2007 to win two consecutive elections. The Coalition under Peter Dutton rebuilds, the Greens under Adam Bandt push from the left, the Teals hold their inner-city seats.

Institutional architecture

How does the Government of Australia work?

Australia is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, founded by the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 (UK) and proclaimed on 1 January 1901. The Sovereign is head of state; the Governor-General acts as their representative in Canberra. The Prime Minister, leader of the largest party in the House of Representatives, is head of government.

The actual federal Cabinet has between 22 and 30 Ministers. The structure is set by the Prime Minister and formally appointed by the Governor-General under the Federal Executive Council. TeamBranch uses a condensed version with 24 seats (the Monarch + Governor-General, the Prime Minister, the Treasurer, a full slate of Cabinet Ministers), and every portfolio title stays editable, so you can stage any Ministry you want.

The Monarch + Governor-General
Hereditary head of state, represented in Canberra by the Governor-General appointed for around 5 years on the advice of the Prime Minister. Resides at Government House, Yarralumla. Gives Royal Assent, opens Parliament, swears in the Prime Minister. Reserve powers used most controversially during The Dismissal of 1975.
The Prime Minister
Leader of the largest party in the House of Representatives. Lives at The Lodge (Canberra) and Kirribilli House (Sydney). Chairs Cabinet, advises the Crown, sets the agenda. Works out of the Prime Minister’s Office in the Ministerial Wing of Parliament House.
The Treasurer
The second most powerful office after the PM in the Australian system — distinct from the UK and unlike Canada where Treasury Board and Finance are blended. Delivers the Budget Speech every May, sets fiscal policy, oversees the RBA. Often the heir apparent to The Lodge.
The Cabinet Ministers
Around 22-30 Ministers: Foreign Affairs, Defence, Attorney-General, Home Affairs, Health and Aged Care, Education, Environment and Water, Climate Change and Energy, Infrastructure and Transport, Communications, Agriculture, Trade and Tourism, Industry, Resources, Social Services, NDIS, Indigenous Australians, Northern Australia, Women, Employment, Finance, Veterans’ Affairs.
Lexicon of power

The terms you need to talk about Canberra.

The Dismissal
On 11 November 1975, Governor-General Sir John Kerr dismissed Prime Minister Gough Whitlam during a Supply crisis with the Senate — the only time vice-regal reserve powers have been used to remove an elected Australian government. Still defines the limits of the Governor-General’s role.
Double dissolution
A simultaneous dissolution of both Houses of Parliament under section 57 of the Constitution. Triggered when the Senate twice rejects a bill from the House. Used seven times since Federation, most recently by Malcolm Turnbull in 2016.
Question Time
The daily 75-minute parliamentary ritual where Ministers face Opposition questions on the floor of the House. Speaker controls the chamber. Broadcast live on ABC News — the most-watched political theatre in the country.
Caucus
A regular meeting of all the MPs and Senators from the parliamentary Labor Party. The Caucus elects the Ministry under Labor rules — a unique feature of the ALP, where the PM allocates portfolios but Caucus picks the Ministers.
Coalition
The standing alliance between the Liberal Party of Australia and the National Party of Australia. Together they form the Coalition, the main non-Labor force in federal politics. Coalition Agreement renegotiated after each election.
Supply
Parliamentary approval of the Budget appropriation bills. A Senate blocking Supply was the trigger for The Dismissal in 1975. Convention since: the Senate does not block Supply, even when controlled by the Opposition.

How do I build my Australian Cabinet online?
Pick the Monarch and Governor-General, the Prime Minister, the Treasurer, then fill the remaining Cabinet portfolios (titles editable) by drawing from hundreds of thousands of personalities — real or fictional: politicians, athletes, celebrities, historical figures, AFL legends, or upload your own cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up, free.
What is the official composition of the Government of Australia in 2026?
In real life: the Monarch (represented by the Governor-General), the Prime Minister, the Treasurer, the Deputy Prime Minister, around 22-30 Cabinet Ministers (Foreign Affairs, Defence, Attorney-General, Home Affairs, Health and Aged Care, Education, Environment and Water, Climate Change and Energy, Infrastructure and Transport, Communications, Agriculture, Trade and Tourism, Industry, Social Services, NDIS, Indigenous Australians, Northern Australia, Women, Employment, Finance, Veterans’ Affairs). On TeamBranch it is a condensed version with 24 seats, with editable portfolio titles.
Can I build a Cabinet for the next federal election?
Yes — that is the most popular use case right now. Try every realistic scenario: Albanese Labor third-term, Dutton Coalition comeback, Labor-Greens minority pact, Teal-balanced hung Parliament, Liberal-National-One-Nation deal. Editable, shareable, refreshed after every relevant national poll.
Can I put athletes or celebrities in the Cabinet?
Of course. Thousands of fun cabinets have already been built. You can nominate Cathy Freeman as Minister for Sport, Hugh Jackman as Foreign Minister, Steve Smith as Trade Minister or the 2023 Matildas as a national-unity bench.
What about historical or fictional figures?

What happens after a real Cabinet reshuffle?
Every reshuffle pushes a database update within 24 hours. You can then "reshuffle" your own Cabinet in one click or build a "what I would have appointed" alt-take. Perfect for stress-testing your reading against the Prime Minister’s Office.
What is the difference between Yarralumla and The Lodge?
Government House, Yarralumla (Canberra) is the official residence of the Governor-General, representative of the Monarch in Australia. The Lodge (also Canberra) and Kirribilli House (Sydney) are the residences of the Prime Minister. The Governor-General swears in the Prime Minister at Yarralumla — never the other way around.
How many Prime Ministers since Federation?
