A formation isn't just numbers: it's an idea of soccer. From Herbert Chapman's WM in the 1920s to Klopp's counter-press, every era invented its own way of occupying space. 1925–1950 · The origins

The WM, the pyramid and the bolt

The 1925 offside rule changes everything: at Arsenal, Herbert Chapman invents the WM (3-2-2-3), the first true modern system. The game is no longer about individual genius but collective structure. The 19th-century 2-3-5 pyramid gives way to deliberate lines.

Across the way, Pozzo's Italy wins two World Cups with the Metodo, and Switzerland theorizes the verrou (the bolt) — the ancestor of the libero. On a tactics board, these setups read at a glance: who covers, who presses, who holds.

1960–1990 · The great schools

Catenaccio vs Total Football

Two philosophies clash. Helenio Herrera's Inter pushes catenaccio to its peak: ultra-tight defense, libero, counter-attack. On the other side, Cruyff's Ajax and the Netherlands invent Total Football — every player can fill every position, and the press becomes a weapon.

Then comes Sacchi's zonal system at 1980s Milan: high defensive line, compact block, collective offside trap. Three ideas, three ways to draw up the same eleven pieces — exactly what a tactics board lets you compare side by side.

2008–2026 · Modern soccer

Tiki-taka, gegenpressing, blocks

The tiki-taka of Guardiola's Barça and Spain 2008–2012 turns possession into a defensive system. In response, Klopp imposes the gegenpressing: win the ball back within six seconds of losing it, when the opponent is most vulnerable.

Today the vocabulary is everywhere: low block, mid block, pressing triggers, three-man build-up, half-spaces. The tactics board puts these concepts within everyone's reach: you don't need a coaching badge to show where to set your line and when to press.

A static lineup tells you nothing. What turns a formation into a readable game plan are the lines: runs, passes, dribbles, shots, zones and notes — each in the color of your choice. Here's the visual grammar of the board.

Player run

The run. Trace a player's path from one position to another. It's the tool that brings the next step to life: run in behind, drop, recovery run.

Pass

The ball delivery. Connect two players to show a pass, a one-two, a switch of play. The line tells you who feeds whom.

Dribble / carry

The ball at the feet. A wavy line for the dribble or carry: the difference from a pass shows instantly.

Shot

The finish. A bold arrow toward goal to show the strike, the rebound finish, or the header at the back post.

Pressing zone / block

The space. Outline a pressing zone, a defensive block, an area to shut off. Essential for explaining a collective trigger.

Text note

The keyword. Drop a written cue — "press here," "cover," "back post" — right on the pitch. And Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y to undo-redo stress-free.

Tactics glossary

The terms to know to talk soccer tactics.

Pressing: Going to press the ball-carrier high up the pitch to force a mistake. High press (on the build-up), pressing triggers (on a pass to one side), all-out. The attacking weapon without the ball.
Low / mid / high block: The team's defensive height without the ball. Low block = defend near your own box. Mid block = in midfield. High block = suffocate the opponent in their half. The master dial of any tactic.
Build-up: Playing out of the back cleanly. Three-man build-up (the 6 drops between the center-backs), two-man, through the keeper. This is where modern games are won — and where the best diagrams are drawn.
Set piece: Corner, free kick, penalty, throw-in, goal kick. The situations where the tactics board shines: you place every player to the inch, draw the runs, and everyone knows their job.
Transition: The switch moment between attack and defense (and back). The attacking transition = the counter; the defensive transition = the recovery. The most decisive seconds of a game.
Half-space & wide channel: The zones of the pitch. The wide channel runs along the touchline; the half-space is the zone between channel and center, the playground of modern playmakers. Width and depth let an attack breathe.
Zonal vs man-marking: Zonal = each player defends a space. Man = each one tracks an opponent. Mixed = a bit of both, especially on set pieces. The choice is easier to show than to explain.
Switch & playing wide: Making the ball switch sides to stretch the opponent's block. A big switch of play opens the far channel: the pass arrow on the board says it in one stroke.
Half-pitch views: Zoom in on the attacking or defensive half to work the zone that matters. Handy for detailing a corner or a build-up without the noise of the rest of the pitch.
Formation: The team's skeleton: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2… Seven setups in one click. Switch systems whenever you want, your players keep their identity, only the positions adapt.

Are my tactics public?

Only if they're complete enough: a tactic with at least 7 players joins the feed and the country's top team. Otherwise it stays private and editable, and your share link stays read-only. You keep control of what's visible.
