From goalkeeper to striker, draft your 11 starters and 15 on the bench.

TeamBranch reproduces the official structure of a soccer team: 1 goalkeeper, 10 field players, a formation (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2…), a captain, the captain's armband. Eleven positions, eleven calls, from the keeper to the strikers.

Draft from the 2026 Canadian Men's National Team (Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich, Jonathan David of Juventus, Stephen Eustáquio of Porto, Tajon Buchanan, Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg, Maxime Crépeau, Derek Cornelius, Sam Adekugbe, Ismaël Koné, Liam Millar), the Qatar 2022 squad, the three Canadian MLS clubs (Toronto FC, CF Montréal, Vancouver Whitecaps), or pull from Brazil, Argentina, USA, Mexico, England, France. You can also assemble a side 100% with your buddies for Sunday's beer-league match.

Signature mode · World Cup 2026 simulation

Your XI plays 8 matches to lift the trophy.

Most tools stop at the lineup. TeamBranch takes you all the way through the tournament. Pick your team, we drop it into the official 48-team bracket, and we simulate every match: 3 group games, then Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, final. That's 8 matches in total to go all the way, with scores, scorers, cards, and stats.

A single simulation engine, calibrated on the real strength of the players you start. For non-soccer cards (a buddy, an MP, your boss), the engine derives a strength from the person's occupation: a soldier defends better than a singer, a lawyer stays cool in PKs, a baker keeps endurance late into extra time. Re-run as many times as you want, share the tournament sheet.

The Eleven Gazette · World Cup special issue
No. 256 · 1930 to 2026

Ninety-six years of World Cup, and Canada's big home-soil chance arrives in 2026.

From Canada's very first World Cup appearance in 1986 in Mexico (zero goals scored, eliminated in the group stage) to Qatar 2022 (Alphonso Davies' historic first goal vs Croatia) and now to co-hosting 2026, the Canadian men's soccer story has been short but transformative. Historically a hockey nation — also basketball and the CFL — Canada is finally discovering soccer, with a generation forged at Bayern Munich, Juventus and Porto. On TeamBranch, you can replay every generation, or rewrite the matches that didn't go our way.

1986 · Canada's first World Cup

Mexico, group stage, zero goals

June 1986. Canada finally qualifies for a World Cup, in Mexico. Head coach Tony Waiters takes his side into Group C alongside France, Hungary and the Soviet Union. The result: 0-1 vs France, 0-2 vs Hungary, 0-2 vs the USSR. Three matches, three defeats, zero goals scored. Then 36 years of nothing — no World Cup appearance until Qatar.

Generation Bruce Wilson, Bob Lenarduzzi, Igor Vrablic, George Pakos. Many were NASL veterans whose careers had been derailed when that first major North American pro league folded in 1984. Canadian soccer entered a long winter, supported only by the gradual rise of women's soccer in the '90s and the launch of TFC in MLS in 2007.

2022 · Davies scores history

Qatar, the first-ever Canadian World Cup goal

November 27, 2022, Khalifa International Stadium. Canada vs Croatia. Second minute: Alphonso Davies, the kid born in a Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana to Liberian parents, leaps to head home Tajon Buchanan's cross. Canada 1-0 Croatia. The first goal in Canadian men's World Cup history, 36 years after Mexico 1986.

Croatia rallied to win 4-1, and Canada lost all three group games (Belgium 1-0, Croatia 4-1, Morocco 2-1). But the symbolic moment was Davies' goal. John Herdman's side, packed with multicultural talent (David is Haitian-Canadian, Larin's parents Jamaican, Buchanan's Jamaican), announced a new Canadian soccer identity. The CanWNT had already won Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 — soccer was here to stay.

2024 → 2026 · The Marsch era and co-hosting

From Copa América to home soil

2024: Jesse Marsch appointed head coach, replacing John Herdman. The American manager, ex-Leeds and ex-RB Leipzig, immediately took Canada to the Copa América semifinal (lost 2-0 to Argentina, with Messi scoring), then a 4th place finish (lost the third-place game to Uruguay on penalties). The best Canadian men's result in any major tournament.

2026 World Cup: third Canadian appearance, first time on home soil, partly. BMO Field Toronto and BC Place Vancouver are the two host venues, with 13 matches in total. Davies, David, Eustáquio, Buchanan, Larin — the multicultural Canadian generation. The dream: get out of the group stage for the first time ever, and then... who knows?

Architecture of the XI

How is a soccer team put together?

A soccer team lines up 11 players on the pitch (one goalkeeper, ten field players) and 15 subs on the World Cup 2026 roster. Each position has a clear role — that's exactly the grammar TeamBranch reproduces for your lineup.

The back line (5 in a 5-3-2, 4 in a 4-3-3) is the structure: tough centre-backs, fullbacks who get forward. The midfield is the engine: ball recovery, transition, creation. The attack is the finish: speed, dribble, last touch. And the goalkeeper, the eleventh man, often wins World Cups on his own.

The goalkeeper · No. 1
Maxime Crépeau, Dayne St. Clair, Milan Borjan, James Pantemis. Reflexes, distribution, command of the box. Borjan was the long-time No. 1 (Qatar 2022); Crépeau is the heir, despite the broken leg in MLS Cup 2022 final.
The centre-backs · 4 and 5
The anchors. Aerial duels, anticipation, distribution. Derek Cornelius, Moïse Bombito, Steven Vitória, Joel Waterman. Yesterday: Atiba Hutchinson (also a midfielder), Doneil Henry, the warhorses of the 2010s.
The fullbacks · 2 and 3
The modern wing-backs. Cover the whole flank, defend then bomb on. Alphonso Davies at left back (or higher up — converted winger), Alistair Johnston at right back from Celtic, plus Sam Adekugbe, Richie Laryea. Davies was already a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich at 19.
The defensive midfielder · No. 6
The anchor in midfield. Ball recovery, first pass, reading the game. Stephen Eustáquio of Porto, born in Canada to Portuguese parents. Yesterday: Atiba Hutchinson (Canada's most-capped player ever with 102 caps), Will Johnson.
The box-to-box midfielders · 8 and 10
The engines. Running volume plus quality on the ball. Ismaël Koné, Mathieu Choinière, Jonathan Osorio, Liam Fraser. Yesterday: Julian de Guzman, Atiba Hutchinson, Dwayne De Rosario.
The attack · 7, 9 and 11
Left winger, striker, right winger. Speed, dribble, finish. Jonathan David at striker (Lille → Juventus, “The Iceman”), Tajon Buchanan on the right (Inter Milan → Villarreal), Jacob Shaffelburg, Liam Millar, Cyle Larin, Lucas Cavallini. The Davies-David tandem is the most prolific in Canadian history.
The soccer lexicon

The words you need to talk footy at the local.

Goal
The ultimate act: put the ball in the back of the net (the goal frame is 24 ft wide by 8 ft tall). Worth 1 point, no bonus. The absolute unit of soccer.
The penalty area · the 18-yard box
The area within 18 yards of goal. Inside it the goalkeeper can handle the ball. A defender's foul here = a penalty kick (a PK).
PK and free kick
The penalty kick (12 yards out, about 75% conversion) is awarded for a foul in the box. The direct or indirect free kick for a foul outside the box. Canadian specialists: Alphonso Davies (left-foot rocket), Jonathan David (clinical).
Offside
The attacker must have at least two defenders (including the keeper) between him and the goal line when the ball is played. VAR transformed how it's applied. The most misunderstood rule in soccer.
VAR and video review
Video Assistant Referee. Officialized at the 2018 World Cup. Reviews goals, PKs, red cards, mistaken identity. MLS adopted it in 2017; by 2026 it has been bedded in for nearly a decade.
Formations · 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 / 3-5-2
The tactical systems. 4-3-3 = modern standard (Pep). 4-2-3-1 = double pivot plus #10 (Marsch). 3-5-2 = three centre-backs plus wing-backs (the Canada-at-Qatar setup that let Davies bomb on). 5-3-2 = the defensive bus.
Penalty shootout · PKs from the spot
The final ordeal after extra time. 5 takers alternating, then sudden death. Canada lost the 2024 Copa América third-place game vs Uruguay on PKs — a heartbreaker.
Brace, hat-trick and nutmeg
The signature words. Brace = two goals in one match. Hat-trick = three goals. Nutmeg = a ball played through an opponent's legs. Worldie = a top-corner thunderbolt. Coach or head coach = the manager (Canadian usage, like American).
Catenaccio and tiki-taka
The iconic schools of thought. Catenaccio = Italian ultra-defensive lockdown. Tiki-taka = Spanish possession 2008-2012. Gegenpressing = German press (Klopp, also Marsch's school). Joga bonito = Brazilian flair. The Canadian way? Hard work, organize, then let Davies fly down the left.

Frequently asked questions

The classics on the ideal lineup.

The questions our users ask most often on Google and in our messages.

How do I build my dream Canadian national team lineup online?
Pick a tactical formation (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, 5-3-2…), then fill the 11 starting positions and 15 subs by drafting from 28,000 players: Canadian Men's National Team stars of today, the 2022 Qatar squad, MLS Canadian content, European exports, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique link to share with your buddies. No sign-up required, 100% free.
When does the 2026 World Cup kick off?
Thursday, June 11, 2026 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the opening match. The tournament runs through Sunday, July 19, 2026, with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Toronto's BMO Field and Vancouver's BC Place are the two Canadian host venues, hosting 13 matches in total. 104 matches over 39 days, the first-ever 48-team edition.
What are the 16 host cities of the 2026 World Cup?
2 in Canada: Toronto (BMO Field) and Vancouver (BC Place). 11 in the USA: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York / New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle. 3 in Mexico: Mexico City (Estadio Azteca, opening), Guadalajara, Monterrey. The final is at MetLife Stadium (82,500 seats), the opening match at the Azteca (87,500 seats).
What is the official composition of a soccer team?
The starting 11 consists of 1 goalkeeper and 10 field players arranged by the formation. In a modern 4-3-3: 4 defenders (2 fullbacks plus 2 centre-backs), 3 midfielders (one defensive mid plus two box-to-box), 3 forwards (two wingers plus one striker). 15 subs on the World Cup 2026 roster (5 subs allowed per match, plus extra time). TeamBranch reproduces this grammar to the letter.
Can I build a Canadian lineup for the 2026 World Cup?
Yes, it's the most popular template right now. We have 6 ready-made lineups by scenario: Jesse Marsch's current squad built around Davies and David, an All-Time Canadian XI (including Dwayne De Rosario, Atiba Hutchinson, Christine Sinclair on the women's side), an MLS Canadian Three lineup (Toronto FC, CF Montréal, Vancouver Whitecaps), a European-export lineup, the redemption for Qatar 2022, and a World XI. Editable, shareable, updated before every friendly and after the final 26-man roster is named.
Can I build a team with my buddies or family?
Of course, eh. 1.8 million custom XIs have been created so far. Upload photos of your buddies, your brother, your dad, your cousin, your beer-league coach, and place them in whatever positions you want. Perfect for the rec league, the corporate footy tournament, the stag, or just some group-chat banter ahead of the World Cup.
What about the Canadian women's national team?
Canada's CanWNT is 100% integrated — and arguably the bigger soccer story for many years. Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, Olympic bronze in London 2012 and Rio 2016. Build the team of Christine Sinclair (190 international goals, the all-time world record, men or women), Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Jessie Fleming, Janine Beckie, Adriana Leon, Kailen Sheridan (GK), Quinn (first openly trans Olympic gold medallist).
Which club leagues are covered?
The Canadian Premier League (Forge FC Hamilton, Cavalry FC Calgary, Pacific FC Langford, HFX Wanderers Halifax, Atlético Ottawa, Valour FC Winnipeg, Vancouver FC, York United), the 3 Canadian MLS clubs (Toronto FC, CF Montréal, Vancouver Whitecaps), all 30 MLS clubs in total, plus the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga (where Davies plays for Bayern Munich), Serie A (David at Juventus), Ligue 1, Liga MX. Women's: NWSL plus the new Northern Super League launching in 2025. Over 720 club profiles in total.
What formations does TeamBranch offer?
Nine: 4-3-3 (modern standard, Pep), 4-2-3-1 (double pivot plus number 10, Marsch's preferred), 4-4-2 (classic), 3-5-2 (three centre-backs plus wing-backs, the Canada-at-Qatar setup), 3-4-3 (attacking, Conte), 5-3-2 (defensive lockdown), 4-1-4-1 (compact), 4-3-2-1 (Christmas tree, Ancelotti), 3-4-2-1. You can switch at any time and your XI rearranges automatically on the interactive pitch.
How has Canada done at past World Cups?
Only 2 World Cup appearances ever. 1986 in Mexico, where Canada was eliminated in the group stage without scoring a single goal. Then 36 years of nothing. Qatar 2022 was the second appearance: again group stage, losing 1-0 to Belgium, 2-1 to Croatia (where Alphonso Davies scored Canada's first-ever men's World Cup goal), then 4-1 to Morocco. Co-hosting in 2026 is the third appearance — and the first time on home soil. 7th most-decorated CONCACAF nation, traditionally behind Mexico, USA, Costa Rica.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no catch. Building your XI, sharing, exports, adding custom photo cards, tactical simulation: all free. No registration required, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Build as many lineups as you want, as many times as you want, for as many tournaments as you want.
Does TeamBranch exist for other soccer nations?
Yes, 187 local editions including Brazil (Seleção), Argentina (Albiceleste), England (Three Lions), France (Les Bleus, for francophone Quebec users), Germany (Die Mannschaft), Spain (La Roja), Italy (Squadra Azzurra), Portugal, Netherlands (Oranje), Belgium, Morocco (Atlas Lions), Uruguay, Mexico (El Tri), the USA (USMNT), Japan, South Korea. Each edition has its own local player base, legends, and house terminology.
