XV

From loosehead to fullback, draft your fifteen in green.

TeamBranch reproduces the official structure of a rugby union XV: 8 forwards (the pack), 7 backs (the line), a captain, a tactical formation. Fifteen positions, fifteen calls, from number 1 to number 15.

Draft from the current Ireland XV (Caelan Doris, Tadhg Furlong, James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Jamison Gibson-Park), the green-jersey immortals (Brian O'Driscoll, Paul O'Connell, Ronan O'Gara, Johnny Sexton, Willie John McBride), the stars of the URC and the All-Ireland League, or pick from the All Blacks, Springboks, England, France. You can also build a side made entirely of the lads from your local club.

Pick the team that runs out in Perth on 1 October 2027. Trust Farrell's settled core, blood the new caps, or go all-time. Nine straight quarter-final exits — 2027 is the chance to finally reach a semi.

The Green Jersey Times · special Ireland edition
N° 151 · 1875-2026

One hundred and fifty-one years of Ireland rugby, a hundred and fifty-one ways to imagine the XV.

From the first Test against England at the Oval on 15 February 1875 (a heavy defeat, but we showed up) to the heartbreak of the Stade de France on 14 October 2023, the men in green have built one of the most stubborn, generous and tragic rugby stories of all: three Six Nations in a row, a Grand Slam, world No. 1 — and still no Rugby World Cup semi-final. On TeamBranch you can replay every generation, or rewrite the quarter-finals that got away.

1875 → 1985 · The early decades

A Triple Crown, then the long wait

Ireland played England, Scotland and Wales from the very first Home Nations tournament. The first Triple Crown came in 1894 at Ballynafeigh and Lansdowne Road. The 1948 side under Karl Mullen won the first ever Grand Slam — the only one for the next 61 years. Jack Kyle, the out-half from Belfast, was the player of the era and is still spoken about in hushed tones.

The 1960s and 70s belonged to forwards like Willie John McBride (Lions invincibles of 1974), Mike Gibson (12 Lions tours), Fergus Slattery, Moss Keane, Mick Doyle. Triple Crown in 1982 under Ciaran Fitzgerald — then a long, painful slide into the wilderness.

1995 → 2014 · The awakening

BOD, ROG and the golden generation

Professionalism arrived in 1995 and Ireland had to learn fast. A young Brian O'Driscoll announced himself at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 19 March 2000 with a hat-trick — Ireland's first win there since 1972. Ronan O'Gara, Paul O'Connell, Keith Wood, Shane Horgan, Peter Stringer: a generation built around skill and devil.

The 2007 match at Croke Park against England — 43-13, the silence during God Save the Queen, then the explosion — is one of the great Irish sporting moments. The 2009 Grand Slam in Cardiff (O'Gara drop, Wales beaten 17-15), the first since 1948, lifted a 61-year weight off the country.

2015 → 2026 · Schmidt to Farrell

Three Six Nations in a row, but the World Cup still mocks us

Joe Schmidt took over and made Ireland ruthless: Six Nations 2014, 2015, 2018 (Grand Slam with Sexton's drop in Paris), first ever home win over the All Blacks in Chicago 2016 (40-29). Then the brutal QF exit to New Zealand in 2019.

Andy Farrell, the English-born former rugby league legend, took the reins. First ever series win in New Zealand in July 2022. Three Six Nations on the trot (2023 Grand Slam, 2024, 2025). World No. 1 for parts of 2023 and 2024. And then Paris 2023: lost 24-28 to the All Blacks in the QF, peak Irish rugby, peak heartbreak. The curse remains. Caelan Doris takes the captaincy into 2027.

Architecture of the XV

How is a rugby union team built?

A rugby XV runs out with 15 starters and 8 reserves: the pack and the line, the forwards and the backs. Each jersey number maps to a specific role. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar for your lineup, one to fifteen.

The pack (1 to 8) is about set-piece and contact: scrums, lineouts, mauls, rucks. The backs (9 to 15) are about movement: handling, territory, running lines, finishing. All of it under a captain, who can wear any number — currently Caelan Doris in the green jersey.

Front row · 1, 2, 3
Loosehead, hooker, tighthead. The foundation: scrum and lineout. Pure granite: Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong.
Locks · 4, 5
The lineout towers. Jumpers, mauling, big hits. Tadhg Beirne, Joe McCarthy, James Ryan — and the ghost of Paul O'Connell still in the team room.
Loose forwards · 6, 7, 8
The flankers and the No. 8. Versatility, breakdown, jackalling. Caelan Doris at 8 and captain, Josh van der Flier at openside, Peter O'Mahony the warrior leader.
Halves · 9, 10
The brains: scrum-half (Jamison Gibson-Park, Craig Casey, Conor Murray) and out-half (Sam Prendergast, Jack Crowley, Ciaran Frawley). Vision, pass, kick — the heirs to Sexton.
Midfield · 12, 13
The inside centre distributes, the outside centre hits the line. Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, Robbie Henshaw, Stuart McCloskey. The line that broke France in Marseille.
Back three · 11, 14, 15
Left wing, right wing, fullback. Pure pace, aerial work, finishing. James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Calvin Nash, Hugo Keenan. Two Aussies turned Irish — and good with it.
Irish rugby lexicon

The words to know to talk rugby like a Thomond Park regular.

Try
The supreme act: ground the ball over the opposition try line. Worth 5 points, plus 2 for the conversion. Lowe in the corner. Hansen in the air. Doris from a maul.
Scrum
The iconic set piece: 8 vs 8, hooker in the middle, props either side, locks behind. Engagement on the scrum-half's feed. Furlong's tighthead has anchored this team for a decade.
Lineout
Restart after the ball goes into touch: an alignment of jumpers, the hooker throws, locks get lifted. Ireland's drilled lineout under Simon Easterby has been a weapon since Schmidt.
Ruck & maul
Two contact phases after a tackle: ruck = ball on the ground, you clear; maul = ball-carrier upright, you drive. The Munster maul at Thomond is folklore.
Drop goal & penalty
The drop (3 pts) is kicked in open play, ball must bounce first. O'Gara's drop in Cardiff 2009 won the Grand Slam. Sexton's at the Stade de France 2018 did the same. The penalty (3 pts) punishes a foul.
Offside & knock-on
Offside = ahead of the ball-carrier. Knock-on = ball spilled forward. The two basic mistakes that end a phase.
Tackle
The defensive weapon. Choke tackle, chop tackle, shoulder hit, high tackle (penalty, and a card these days). Ireland's line-speed defence under Andy Farrell rewrote how teams attacked us.
Triple Crown & Grand Slam
The Triple Crown: beat England, Scotland and Wales in the same Six Nations. The Grand Slam: win all five. Ireland has 5 Grand Slams: 1948, 2009, 2018, 2023 — and they all hurt the soul to win.
Calcutta Cup & Millennium Trophy
Ireland v England plays for the Millennium Trophy (since 1988). Add the Centenary Quaich v Scotland and the Lansdowne Cup v Australia. The Six Nations is a museum of side trophies.
Wooden spoon
The "prize" handed to the last-placed side in the Six Nations — the team that loses all five matches. Italy has worn it most often. Ireland last got it in 1998. Long may that streak continue.

Frequently asked

The classics on building your dream XV.

The most-googled questions and the ones most asked in our inbox.

How do I build my dream Ireland XV online?
Pick a tactical formation (classic, attacking, defensive, kicking game), then fill all 15 positions from 1 to 15 by drafting from 12,000 players: current Ireland internationals, legends in green, URC and AIL stars, international icons, or upload your own photo cards. You get a unique shareable link. No sign-up required, 100% free.
How is a rugby union XV officially built?
A rugby XV is made of 8 forwards (1 loosehead prop, 2 hooker, 3 tighthead prop, 4 and 5 locks, 6 and 7 flankers, 8 number eight) and 7 backs (9 scrum-half, 10 out-half, 11 left wing, 12 inside centre, 13 outside centre, 14 right wing, 15 fullback). Plus 8 reserves on the bench. TeamBranch reproduces this grammar exactly.
Can I build a squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
Yes — this is by far the most popular use right now. RWC 2027 runs in Australia from 1 October to 13 November, expanded to 24 teams. You can draft multiple hypotheses: Farrell's settled XV, post-Six Nations refresh, all-time Ireland, Leinster-heavy core, the curse-breaker XV, World XV. Editable and shareable, update it before every Test.
Can I create a team with my mates or family?
Of course. 800,000 custom XVs have already been built. Upload photos of the lads, your da, your sister, your cousin, your club coach, the Saturday morning second XV from down the road, and slot them into any position. Perfect for the club final, the work team-build, the stag do, or just a WhatsApp group slagging.
What about the Ireland Women's team?
Women's rugby is integrated 100%. Build the Ireland Women's XV with Beibhinn Parsons on the wing, Aoife Wafer in the back row, Sam Monaghan at lock, Linda Djougang in the front row, Dannah O'Brien at out-half. After years missing the big stage, the girls qualified for RWC 2025 in England — a new chapter for women's rugby on the island.
Which club competitions are covered?
The United Rugby Championship (all 4 Irish provinces: Leinster, Munster, Ulster, Connacht, plus Welsh, Scottish, Italian and South African sides), the Champions Cup / Heineken Champions Cup, the All-Ireland League (10 senior clubs in Division 1A), plus France's Top 14, England's Premiership and Super Rugby Pacific. More than 800 club cards in total.
What tactical formations does TeamBranch support?
Four: Classic (balanced), Attacking (loose forwards, fast wingers, ball-in-hand), Defensive (heavy pack, tactical scrum-half, kicking game), Kicking Game (territory rugby, dominant out-half, box kicks — Sexton's signature). You can switch at any time and your XV reorganises automatically on the interactive field.
What's the difference between rugby union XV and rugby sevens?
Rugby union (15 players, 80 minutes in 2 halves) is the classic format: Rugby World Cup, Six Nations, URC, Champions Cup. Sevens (7 players, 14 minutes) is the short Olympic format. Ireland Men's Sevens won the 2022 World Series leg in Los Angeles and made the Paris 2024 Olympics. TeamBranch covers both — Sevens drops autumn 2026.
Why has Ireland never reached a Rugby World Cup semi-final?
Nine straight quarter-final exits: 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 (vs Wales), 2015 (vs Argentina), 2019 (vs NZ), 2023 (vs NZ 24-28 in Paris, peak Ireland performance, still not enough). The curse is real and it hurts: three Six Nations on the trot, a Grand Slam, the 2022 series win in New Zealand, world No. 1 — yet that elusive last-four berth still escapes us. The 2027 World Cup in Australia is the next chance to finally crack it.
Is the service really free?
Yes, no exception. Composition, sharing, exports, custom card uploads, tactical simulation: everything is free. No sign-up required, no intrusive ads, no paywall. Build as many XVs as you want.
Does TeamBranch exist for other rugby nations?
Yes, 96 local editions including France (Les Bleus), South Africa (Springboks), New Zealand (All Blacks), Australia (Wallabies), England, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Argentina (Los Pumas), Fiji, Japan (Brave Blossoms). Each edition has its own player database and local terminology.
