Nobody could say for certain where it started. Some blamed a contaminated shipment at the port. Others pointed to a research lab that went dark on a Tuesday night and never came back online. What everyone agrees on is that by Wednesday morning, the world had changed forever.
«عند حلول الليل، كان برج المملكة لا يزال مشتعلاً، يُطلي بالذهب مدينة لم يبقَ فيها شيء حي. طريق العليا، مهجور، مفروش بعربات أطفال مقلوبة ونعال متروكة. وفي الظلام، كانت جائعة.»

The first reports came from the central train station. Commuters stumbling on platforms, ashen-faced, collapsing onto the tracks before rising again with mechanical slowness, glassy eyes, slack jaws, an appetite for something other than the morning paper. Transit workers thought it was a mass poisoning. Then the biting started.
Within two hours, the underground tunnels had become slaughterhouses. Entire trains ran on schedule, doors jammed shut, filled with screams that fell silent one by one, station after station. In the main hub, thousands found themselves trapped between turnstiles and the grey tide rising from below.
On the surface, the city didn't understand right away. Café terraces still served espressos while the first infected stumbled into daylight from subway exits. Pedestrians filmed with their phones. Some videos went viral in minutes, before the networks collapsed entirely.
The police chief activated the emergency protocol at 6:47 PM. By 7:15 PM, he had been relieved of duty. By 8:02 PM, no one answered at headquarters.
The military tried to establish a perimeter along the main boulevards, but cities aren't built to be carved up cleanly. Every alley, every courtyard, every fire escape was a breach. Helicopters broadcast evacuation orders that no one could hear anymore, drowned out by shattering glass, car alarms, sirens, and everywhere, that low collective groan rising from the streets like a sick breath.
By nightfall, the city's landmarks still glowed, illuminating streets that had nothing living left in them. Main avenues lay deserted, littered with overturned strollers and abandoned shoes. Along the waterfront, silhouettes wandered by the dozens, by the hundreds, dragging their feet on wet pavement, drawn to the faintest sound, the faintest light.
The city had gone dark.
And in the darkness, it was hungry.
